Played in teams of five in an oval arena with a ball, the objective is simple. Score more points than the other team. Points are scored by getting the ball into the opposing team's goal. Easy. The rules for handling the ball are fast and loose, with both hands and feet being allowed to handle the ball. Teams can play with whatever formation they like but typically always have one member in goals. Although there have been teams in history who had omitted having a player defending the goal to give themselves a number advantage on the turf. This is one strategy, there are various other tactics used in Smashball. The Mighty Tusks are known to employ Park the Star Destroyer in which they go one goal up and then move all their players into defence, creating a near impenetrable wall of Gamorreans. The Nar Shaddaa Nasties are prone to use Take 'Em Out, opting to focus on injuring opponents rather than scoring goals. Each team employs their own strategies to win based upon their team strengths and weaknesses and are constantly trying to think up new tactics in order to win.
Smashball is a full contact sport. Much like one watches NASCAR for the crashes, and ice hockey for the brawls, smashball is known for its loose rulings and unfiltered violence. Players are not regulated in any manner. This means that all genders are eligible to play in the same league, stimulants and drugs are allowed, as are cybernetics and in recent times even Force users have been accepted into the Premier League. Obvious weapons are banned, such as blasters, knives, bats, vibroknucklers and beyond but players have been known to go around this ruling through uniform. It is not uncommon to see durasteel-toe capped boots, sharpened studs or cleats, or unnecessarily padded gloves.
