With the introduction of MedCorps, a semi-militarized paramedical faction within the Confederacy, the need for a mobile command vessel was quickly realized. The construction of the Chiron serves in two aspects, one in that it serves as a mobile command vessel for MedCorps; and two, it serves in the capacity of a hospital vessel capable of handling large quantities of injured individuals. The Chiron itself moves throughout Confederacy space, from their primary worlds such as Geonosis, to the furthest fringe worlds. In many cases its passengers are clients of MedCorps - those that have paid their yearly fee and have been recovered; while many of its other passengers are personnel of the CDF, recovered from a battlefield or some training accident - with a few passengers being captured enemies of the Confederacy.

Either way, all who end up in one of the medical suites aboard the Chiron have one thing in common, they all pay credits to remain on the vessel and get the highest care that MedCorps provides - and that the client/passengers can pay.

The Chiron was an ambitious undertaking, which required the utilization of a multitude of manufacturers - though its primary frame the bulk of the work was accomplished at the Fondor Shipyards where the majority of the parts were shipped during the construction. It size, being one of the largest Hospital Ships in existence within the galaxy ensures that it is capable of caring for vast amounts of individuals - with it capable of containing the population of a small city or sizable army formation. Its massive holding tanks ensure that it does not need to stop for Bacta more than a couple times in a year (depending on how frequently or often they go through it).

Hosting five-hundred offices, the vessel makes up for its high patient to doctor ratio with two massive storage bays that hold thousands of medical droids. These droids work in conjunction with the doctors and nurses to provide the best care to the patients on board the vessel. Additional facilities include two-hundred surgical theaters, physical therapy suites, examination rooms, burn units and even three maternity wards for expectant parents.

All this though comes at a cost in terms of how the vessel is further outfitted. Due to the design being focused on the vessel serving as a Hospital Ship, it lacks any kind of offensive weaponry that many other vessels of its size would carry; though this is also due predominately because it is a civilian ship more than a warship. Its primary defense is multiple shield generators as well as a thick reinforced hull; though even these are further shored up with the addition of several point defense laser cannons (specifically to protect against starfighter attacks). Even its capability to launch starfighters is somewhat diminished; only carrying ten squadrons of starfighters - the vast majority of its hanger space is allocated to the gunships and shuttles utilized by the MedCorps recovery teams.

Likewise, due to its immense size, the vessel is rather vulnerable to faster attack vessels that could potentially just as easily disable the Chiron and leave it dead in the water to be boarded. Even the sheer fact that while it can care for and is capable of carrying almost a few hundred thousand people, it has a small amount of escape pods (located in areas that only those who aren't in the worst condition can access). However; when it comes to internal defense - should the vessel be boarded - the MedCorps recovery teams aid additional Security teams in protecting the patients and the vessel from being taken. In these instances, they have access to non-lethal and lethal weapons located in the MedCorps Armories (many of which are designed to prevent penetration of the internal hull).
