Private The Catalyst Protocol: Motivations and Decoys

Such a time will never come? Is that true? I will forever now be on the run? My eyebrows rise in surprise at that statement, for it is near impossible to imagine. I have no bounties or arrest warrants holding claim over me, and yet I am still being hunted nonetheless. It is an entirely new set of circumstance that I was not quite prepared for.

Following that, my lab partner rightly guesses the kind of livelihood that I have had; compared to the rest of the Galaxy. I did live under the safeguard of a bubble, afterall. And outside of it, the Galaxy is as cruel and dangerous as the jungles of New Cov. But at least there I knew what the threats looked like. Out here is another matter.

He continues on, making a pledge of sorts to protect our research and to have it continue despite the interruptions. And I did not miss the double-meaning in his last statement. My idea is invaluable, but I am not. Ideas can be shared afterall, while my life cannot. So if it came down to a choice between myself and my research; it will be my research that will be saved at all costs. My own life be damned.

And so I make my own pledge. "
You are correct. In my previous life I was a corporate politician. I worked my way upwards to the top, and for a time I ran New Cov. But then I switched my focus back to research and development once it was clear that politics is not quite for me. I much prefer my laboratories. There is a lot out there that I have never encountered, there is a lot about the current state of the Galaxy that I do not know. But I shall keep going, regardless of what happens. Until my bitter end."

He observed her reaction, he saw her emotions. It needed no empath to understand that she did not expect such. Imperius was not the right one to comfort her, he did not even consider it an option. It was merely a concept he ran through his mind, not a consideration. Sympathy, compassion, love died over time if they were not nurtured and he never had an opportunity or desire to pursue anything that was not his duty.

It was before the Exchange got him that he felt it the last time and any remnant of the feeling had been vanquished when he had to abandon his body. What remained was cold, almost frozen, and lacked any human empathy. Imperius knew his duty and his principles. Honor compelled him to do things less practical than they should be.

"You have entered a new arena and while personal relations will provide comfort, they will not keep you safe forever. If you want to see this project and its research till the end - you should get used to military being around. It will be a necessity."

Personal relations? I have very little of those. Yet I do not doubt that even those can keep me safe forever. Nothing could. Not even my lab partner.

I dip my head in acknowledgment at the fact that I am to get used to military personnel being around. As a politician, I was often accompanied by armored guards. My Father had hired Karlo Kyrr Karlo Kyrr and his team for a time. But where they are now, I do not know. Still, I am certain that they are not the sort that my lab partner is referring to. But I hope at least that I will be able to conduct my research in relative peace.

"I understand. It will take a little adjustment on my part, but an adjustment that can be easily made. As long as my freedom of movement is not hindered by them, I should be able to conduct my research well. And afterward we have reached success? I will cross that bridge when we come to it." Or so the saying goes, anyways. Once this project is over, I am unsure of what will happen for me then. No doubt I will still be hunted, but perhaps not as feverishly.

"I am taking care of security for our project, but I am not putting you under house arrest. Results require the calm environment you have mentioned and will be provided by my military personnel and eventually by a new location. You will at no point be prevented to move at your own discretion."

Imperius was certain that she would not like to be seen as affiliated with an Imperial cause, but that was where this was heading and she had an opportunity to use her political and scientific acumen to its fullest if she decided to stick around. Given that the project advanced and yielded results of course.

I bow my head in thanks, ever so grateful to know that my movements will not be limited with my lab partner's security. I may have lived within a bubble for most of my life, yet I know that I would not do so well within a cage.

"
Thank you for your understanding. It takes a certain pressure off of me. Have you ever conducted such research before with so many eyes upon you?"

I know very little about my lab partner's scientific past. He is a Warmaster; that I am aware of. Yet this pursuit is an entirely different one. I cannot help but be curious into this shift of his focus. However having such a talent watching over the safety of my research is indeed a valuable thing.

"I have not conducted research yet this barebones or exposed, nor with the minimum amount of thought put into security and secrecy." He simply stated. "An advantage if you are aware and know what others simply call 'Unknown' - even if by now it should be 'Ignored'." He referred to the Unknown Regions.

"We have much work to do, Miss Terallo. I have outlined several genetical fusion methods after running calculations on their success probability while we spoke, some with the Isotope-5 reacting quite favorable, others which did not show any promise. The Midichlorians are reacting, but it seems quite random. I have transmitted my data to your account - review at your earliest convenience."

"I will be departing now - and next time we meet, will be at a new facility if everything goes according to my plan."

I keep myself quiet for a moment while my lab partner speaks. There is no denying his statement. I was completely naive in my approach. I had it figured that the Galaxy could care less about anything that someone like me was doing. I have not hurt anyone, nor have I even tested my research on anyone. I merely took an inspired idea from what makes Makeb so unique and I just ran with it. I dove in completely into my research for there is nothing else going on for me right now.

And one slicer has ruined the privacy that I once had. Although my identity has not yet been broadcasted; that has not stopped others from finding me out. Some are proud of my research while others despise it. But are they telling the truth? I am finding it difficult in knowing who to trust. I can trust my lab partner as well as Mr. Usher Mr. Usher . But the rest? I am unclear in regards to their motivations.

His next statement mentioning my name springs me from my thoughts. My focus returns instantly to the opportunity that his calculations and data can provide. The sustainability of the serum's effects matters almost as much as the power that the serum can give to others. And that is one half of the puzzle that I long to solve.

"I will certainly look into it, thank you. And I will send you my notes thereafter. Until we meet again, Imperius." I bow my head to him and then turn to leave to my office, eager to get started on analyzing data from him and Mister Usher.
