Such a time will never come? Is that true? I will forever now be on the run? My eyebrows rise in surprise at that statement, for it is near impossible to imagine. I have no bounties or arrest warrants holding claim over me, and yet I am still being hunted nonetheless. It is an entirely new set of circumstance that I was not quite prepared for.
Following that, my lab partner rightly guesses the kind of livelihood that I have had; compared to the rest of the Galaxy. I did live under the safeguard of a bubble, afterall. And outside of it, the Galaxy is as cruel and dangerous as the jungles of New Cov. But at least there I knew what the threats looked like. Out here is another matter.
He continues on, making a pledge of sorts to protect our research and to have it continue despite the interruptions. And I did not miss the double-meaning in his last statement. My idea is invaluable, but I am not. Ideas can be shared afterall, while my life cannot. So if it came down to a choice between myself and my research; it will be my research that will be saved at all costs. My own life be damned.
And so I make my own pledge. "You are correct. In my previous life I was a corporate politician. I worked my way upwards to the top, and for a time I ran New Cov. But then I switched my focus back to research and development once it was clear that politics is not quite for me. I much prefer my laboratories. There is a lot out there that I have never encountered, there is a lot about the current state of the Galaxy that I do not know. But I shall keep going, regardless of what happens. Until my bitter end."
