Revna stared at the crumbling, quiet, and dark ziggurat in front of her as a bone cutting wind whistled through the canyon around her - a sight she had seen before not so long ago, when she had made the strange journey to this hidden location at the behest of her own Master.

This place was steeped in ancient Sith history that spanned thousands of years - but it was a dead world, where civilizations and empires had once flourished, but were now nothing more than ghosts. It was a place that wasn’t charted on any maps, and its location was known only to Revna because her Master had seen fit to reveal its location to her for a very special purpose.

She had undergone her Knighting Trial here.

And it would be the place where another young Sith hopeful would either rise…or fall.

Varin Mortifer had come far in his time under Revna’s watchful eye and guidance; she couldn’t take all the credit in how he had matured as a Sith warrior, for he had learned from others too and had gained valuable knowledge and wisdom and insight through experiences he had found himself in while working for the Sith Covenant. He had already carried a foundation when he came into her sight that fateful day on Korriban, and she had built upon it as best she could. She had made mistakes, certainly. He had been her second apprentice, but the only one who remained in the end. Guiding him had been a learning curve itself for her, and she had grown much from the experience.

Now - it was time for the young Sith man to face his greatest challenge yet, and should he persevere and come out on the other side, then he would take his place with the rest of them as a Darth himself.

Resting in one of the deep pockets of the robe she wore sat a beacon that carried the coordinates of the hidden planet’s location. Like her own Master had done with her, Revna had sent the coordinates to Varin in a personal message and told him to come alone - his lover was not to accompany him, neither were his allies nor his battle brother. She gave him no other explanation beyond that, and expected him to come at once.

And so she waited there, and clasped within her pale hands was a small jar, made from the red sands and clay of Korriban that had been infused with dark side infused alchemical ashes, the outside of it glimmering with various Sith symbols and sigils. She had made this jar herself, marked each rune by hand, deep in the bowels of Korriban’s palace, within the dark heart of the Sith King’s ritual lair. Each mark had a meaning, and entwined this sacred ritual with dark Sith sorcery.

The only other living individual there with Revna might recognize some of those symbols if He looked closely enough, perhaps even the Sith rune-spell for Soul Binding.

She had then used her knowledge of various poisons and toxins and her creativity in the realm of Sith alchemy, and created a concoction that would replicate what she had experienced in her trial, albeit with some adjustments. She wanted to make it personal, individual to Varin, something that she knew would bypass his own body’s unique adaptations. He would not be able to burn or purge this elixir from his body, once it was consumed. There was only one way to come out on the other side, and Revna ensured it would be the only way.

If he failed…he would die.

And if he died, the Sith spell on that jar would be invoked, and Varin’s soul would become bound to it - a constant reminder to Revna of the failure.

But Varin wouldn’t know of this, and she intended to keep it that way. She was fairly confident in him…but the question was, was he confident in himself?

And so she waited, a somber weight settling over her shoulders. She cast a glance towards the only other person waiting there with her - her Father, Varin’s Grandmaster. This would be a family affair - and she hoped that with both of them being there, would encourage Varin enough to persevere through whatever Trial lay before him.

As ever the wind cut deeply into Him even through His heavy robes, whipping through the ruined stones and structures that it had already long since cleaved paths into and washing over the pair of them like a tide of blades. The biting chill that it carried was perhaps the only thing that rivaled its own ferocity, with each gust causing Him to suppress a slight shiver. His body begged Him to move, to clutch His arms closer to His body and try to find some sort of barrier to place between Himself and the wind.

Yet Darth Strosius ignored such notions as He knew well enough that there was little point trying to avoid the planet's weather, any real shelter from it had been worn away to uselessness before any in living memory had come to this place. What little of the decaying stone structures and natural outcroppings remained were but jagged and harrowed funnels that served to scorn any that dared to hide from the scouring winds. Thus all one could do was remain stalwart against them in spite of their insistence.

His daughter was following in that example, with Himself standing beside her with His arms crossed behind His back and gloved hands clasped together, while they waited the arrival of her apprentice. Young Varin had evidently blossomed quite quickly into the ways of the Sith, at the very least enough for Revna to consider giving him this final trial of his apprenticeship. In the back of His mind He idly regretted that He hadn't been more active in the younger Sith's education and training however that doubt had to be silenced as soon as it manifested.

This world had a habit of preying upon such things after all. Only certainty prevailed here, a notion that He had stressed to Revna when she'd first invited Him along for this occasion. He could only hope that Varin was as certain of what was to come as she was, lest the poor boy suffer a grim fate indeed. Darth Strosius hadn't had the chance to study the jar that she was carrying to any significant degree but what few symbols and runes His hidden gaze had trailed over were recognizable enough. If a bit grim in their implication.

He hadn't broached the subject however, it simply wasn't His place to do so. This was Varin's trial to undertake and Revna's to give, He was simply blessed with the opportunity to show His support to the both of them as they performed their roles in the coming ritual. As cursed to observe it as He was honored to take part in it.

The demand to come to the strange planet had seemingly come out of the blue. But Varin knew the call would happen eventually. A call that was left with zero choice of refusal, the call to come alone. His Master seemed to have something extremely important for him. His Dreadnaught drifted within the system, unknown of the planet’s location, while his ship delivered him to the planet’s surface. Any traces of the system's location were to be removed from its database once they had arrived. And his crew always followed strict orders.

Varin concentrated on the thread of the force as he piloted towards the planet’s surface. Leaving his ship and his crew behind. He had a feeling to leave his weapons and his armor as well, arriving in his Sith robes. Blessed by the Dark Side to resist flame and extreme heat, and adorned in the same Runic inscriptions upon his body. The planet itself seemed to guide him and his ship to the landing zone, where he was then directed towards his Master’s location. Technology would prove useless in this endeavor, and Varin knew that.

This was but a small test in his connection with the Dark Side.

The cold winds bit between the seams of his robes, clinging to any opening they could find. His body tried to shiver, but Varin simply bit the urge back. He had been trapped within the cold before, and over the years he had learned to control himself, his body temperature and his breathing.

His trail led him into a canyon, carved by wind erosion and etched by time. The wind funneled relentlessly, blowing back his robes as the mountain of a Sith carved his own path through the resistant natural phenomena. Until the Ziggurat had come into view, accompanied by two figures. Two very familiar figures.

Standing before him was his Master, Lady Revna, a small jar clutched within her pale fingers, radiating with a dark essence and something else from within. Varin could smell it. Something potent, something rare. Something deadly.

Beside her stood Varin’s Grandmaster, Lord Strosius. The man who had trained Lady Revna and had imparted wisdom unto Varin. His heavy robes clung to his body as he stood with a discipline that only age and experience could show.

Varin’s arms hung loosely at his sides as he slowly dipped his head towards the both of them.

“Masters. I have arrived, what is thy bidding?”

It wasn’t much longer before Revna’s face titled, and she turned her head slightly to cast her gaze into the iron, bitter cold sky above her and Strosius’ heads. She felt the moment Varin had entered the atmosphere of the planet, and knew he was on his way. That realization brought a strange and sudden skip to her own pulse, and a brief spike of uncertainty, anxiety even. She looked down at the small jar in her hands once more, and swallowed hard.

Was he ready for this? Was she?

She pushed those thoughts and those emotions to the wayside; now was not the time to allow hesitation or fear to creep in. She felt in her heart that he was ready for this, and she and Mercy and all others that had been a part of his life and growth, had given him everything he needed to undertake this moment.

The rest of it would be up to him.

Any trace of nervousness or uncertainty had vanished from Revna when she saw the tall figure of her Apprentice approach both her and Darth Strosius. He had left everything behind, it would seem. Even his weapons. It wouldn’t have mattered if he brought them or not, for they wouldn’t help him through what was coming.

Varin came to a halt before the two of them and bowed his head in respect towards them both.

“Masters. I have arrived, what is thy bidding?”

Revna gave a faint smile; so proper, she thought to herself as she stood a little straighter.

Apprentice. I am pleased you found your way here.” She began, her voice as soft as it always was, though it carried on the wind to his ears with ease. “Come, come…stand with us, Varin…” She said, inviting him to come and standing alongside her and Alisteri. When he had taken his place, she turned and faced the Ziggurat, the desiccated remnants of a bygone era of the Sith. The wind whistled through, biting to the very bone. Even for Varin, whose body ran hotter than others, the chill would be felt.

It was not ordinary cold wind, afterall, but the chilling touch of the Dark Side itself. It was all around them, saturated into everything, a pressure that settled behind the eyes, behind the ribcage.

Quite the sight, isn’t it?” she said, her eyes still staring straight ahead as she clutched the jar against her chest. "...do you know why I summoned you here, Varin?" she asked after several moments of silence, finally turning her gaze to him as she waited for his answer.

He sensed the moment that Varin set foot on the desolate world's surface, a simple matter given that he was the only other living being aside from the pair of them already stood at the ziggurat. His hidden gaze drifted to Revna, idly noting the slight shift in her demeanor. She was concerned. He understood of course, He didn't doubt for a moment that He must have looked quite similar when she had been the one approaching Him in this place not long ago.

The masked Sith Lord inclined His head as the young apprentice came into view, evidently having chosen to forgo bringing any adornments or weaponry with him even with the nature of his summons being an unknown. A show of trust in his master to be certain. That trust wasn't misplaced either, although it remained to be seen whether that sentiment would be shared once the concoction took hold of Varin's body and mind. Doubting one's choices when being paralyzed was rather understandable after all.

Darth Strosius bowed His head as His daughter greeted her apprentice and for a moment it seemed as though not even the biting chill of the winds could dampen the warmth in her words. A shame that it was only for a moment. He turned with them to face the structure, though His gaze flickered between the jar and Varin rather than remaining ahead. For as much as He so sorely wished that it wouldn't be needed, there was a practical part of His mind that had to idly prepare for if it was.

That had to prepare for what state Revna might be left in if the boy never awoke from the trial. He knew how inconsolable He would have been, how ashamed of His own methods and teachings He would feel, how desperate He would have become to undo what couldn't be undone. A hum escaped the masked man at the question, though He knew it wasn't one that she asked to be answered. Finally His gaze drifted forwards as her eyes turned to Varin, just barely watching the two from the periphery of His visor.

Varin approached both Masters facing the ziggurat before them. A silence befalling him as he took a moment to reflect on the area around them. The events the ground had witnessed and all the secrets the wind holds to itself.

It truly was quite a sight he thought after Lady Revna asked him.

“There is power here. Ancient and raw. More than just a sight, Master. It feels more like an invitation.”

Varin looked at Lady Revna after she asked her next question. The wind continued its whistling through the canyons above them, forever etching further into their walls. As if writing what all it has witnessed upon the surface. Each new scar upon the stone an acknowledgment of what has presently unfolded before it. Then his eyes met Darth Strosius. The man who had built such an enduring family. A legacy that still remains to this day. The Children of Wonosa.

He could only assume that both masters being present and the strict orders of coming alone meant something truly important.

“I can only guess the subject has great significance.”

He spoke quietly as his gaze met the ziggurat before him.

“That is about all I can gather. Especially in such a place as this.”

No, his Master did not call upon him often, but when she did it was always important. This summons had greater significance. He could feel it in the air around them. He could sense the nervousness within his master, though he did not draw attention to it.

“I sense this is not a typical meeting between us though.”

His arms slowly folded behind his back as he waited for a response.

“There is power here. Ancient and raw. More than just a sight, Master. It feels more like an invitation.”

An invitation, indeed - Revna mused on that for a moment as a gust of wind buffeted her back and stirred her hair about her face. This place did hold power - not like it once had at the height of Sith dominion that had once held sway here - but it was a power that could be tapped into and utilized. The uniqueness of this place had become known to her, when she took her own Trial of Passage here. One was invited to face the truth about themselves, and overcome it - or join the spirits that haunted this place still.

Her question to Varin on whether or not he knew why he had been called out here was answered honestly. Varin guessed that the reason was for something significant, and he wasn’t wrong. His gaze settled back on the distant ruins of the ancient Sith temple beyond them, and drew his hands behind his back. So militant, so official.

Revna idly remarked that Varin stood in a manner that calmly exuded his confidence; his self-assuredness. Long gone was the uncertain acolyte who had crash landed on Korriban, who had struggled to use a simple datapad and who had preferred to use parchment and a writing utensil. He likely still did, but the point was - he had grown. Not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally as well.

And he had grown in power, immensely. Perhaps most importantly, he had learned how to manage and utilize that power - and that had pushed him to reach further, higher, and excel within the Covenant’s ranks. He was ready for this next step, she was certain of that. Even though doubts and uncertainties tried to crawl into her mind, she cast them away.

“I sense this is not a typical meeting between us though.”

Revna did not outright tell Varin why he had been summoned to this secretive place. He was insightful enough to understand that this was a significant moment, and soon enough the would learn the reason why it was no typical meeting between Sith.

Tell me, what does it mean to be Sith?” the little woman asked her taller student. “For all our triumphs, we have also failed time and time again at this or that. Why do you think that is? And what do you feel you have to offer as a Sith, to change that?

A hum escaped the masked Sith Lord at the mention of this world having an invitation of sorts, though while it was in agreement it wasn't positive. There wasn't anything about this place that could be described as welcoming after all. The wind demanded submission and avoidance, the ruins belied the fate of the last who sought to prosper here, the atmosphere itself strung one along on an undeniable path forwards and only those who had been here before knew where it led.

There was certainly an invitation of sorts before the young Sith, though if he knew exactly what it entailed then he might not be as willing to receive such a thing. He would learn in due time of course, it was inevitable now. Darth Strosius did His best to appreciate His grand-apprentice's naivety instead of pitying it. "Ancient and raw indeed. You'd be hard pressed to find anything similar beyond forgotten places on the Holy Worlds, and those are rather scarce these days."

While of course a Force Nexus was always more vibrant with living beings around it, a place such as this had been pruned by isolation in a very particular and intentional manner. The Dark Side coiled in on itself without anyone around to sustain it, diminishing in one sense but evolving in another and becoming all the more potent still. Even having the three of them here seemed to be a disturbance to its usual aura and presence in a sense. An insult that it might just return unto them if they weren't careful.

Darth Strosius idly hoped that this trial would be relatively swift for Varin, He'd rather not remain here for any longer than was necessary as it was. Revna wisely decided not to address her apprentice's answer directly, instead simply meeting it with another question. One that He had asked of her when they last stood together here. In spite of it all He couldn't help but smirk at that, feeling no small measure of pride in seeing the continuation of at least one of His teachings.

Now it was time to see how much of a scholar in their ways and history Varin was, and He was eager to hear it.

THEME

Varin could feel what it was Darth Strosius was feeling. He held a deep seeded hatred of this place it seemed. Yet the words he spoke seemed to have a hidden respect to it. Sith always respected power to a degree. Before he could dwell further on the thought his Master’s question came to him.

What did it mean to be Sith?

What did he have to offer them?

The questions sat within his mind and his bones.

“Some would say to be Sith is the pursuit of dominance and control. Others would say it is the pursuit of knowledge regardless of danger. For the longest of time the Sith ruled from the shadows. Waging wars, making alliances, stacking odds against their enemies favors.”

He paused as his gaze held the ziggurat before them.

“To me, to be a Sith is the pursuit of one’s self. To do what is necessary for the end goal. To pursue yourself in order to pursue the bigger picture. The Sith have risen and fallen because of a simple pattern that seems unescapable. Yet the seeds we sow in secrecy bring us back. We fail because we do not adapt enough from these patterns. We hesitate with change.”

His gaze slowly looked over to his Master.

“Throughout history Sith are always at each other’s throats. Scheming behind each other’s backs. My intention is to end that entirely and bring about something most thought impossible. I wish to bring unity among the Sith. For the Sith all have one thing in common.”

He paused as his words clung to the air.

“An enemy that we all hate.”
