Jantar Keltainen

Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak
"Do you know how many bones are in the human body, General Solo? If you do, just triple the number, and you'll know how many bones you'll have when I finish with you."
― Gethzerion

Lilla’s training with the Nightsisters began in earnest once she’d passed the test of the Sleeper. That night, the Zabrak showed her a copy of the Book of Shadows.

“I have been instructed to teach you all of the spells and rituals contained within this volume. It was written by the founder of the Nightsisters of Dathomir, Mother Gethzerion. It is different to the Book of Law, written by Allya after she had become old and weak.”

“And we can start with the Water of Life.”

The Zabrak gave a brief explanation of the notion of ichors, that were common to Nightsister magic – or magick as they referred to it.

The Water of Life was a liquid used by the Nightsisters of Dathomir to heal. Its ingredients included water, and – conveniently – flesh extracted from the Sleeper. Brewing the concoction was considered a rite of passage for a Nightsister.

Jantar made up a number of jars of the liquid and between them, they cut up the Sleeper, so its flesh could be used for future ichors.

“The Water of Life has a second benefit,” the Zabrak said, “It can also be used to render someone near-invisible.”

Jantar took some of the liquid to help repair her injuries. Given she was dark-sided and unable to draw on the healing properties of the light, this was a welcome boon to any future missions in which she may be injured.

Next, the Zabrak showed Jantar The Touch of the Kiin'Dray. It was an application of the Force that allowed the user to apply a binding force to their hands and feet to scramble up a cliff face or to hold a weapon in a grip that was unbreakable.

They practiced the Touch until Jantar was confident enough to scale the entire mountain using it. It took a week, but by the end of it, she was proficient.

Then the Nightsister taught her the Surge of the Brier. It was similar to the Force technique, Plant Surge.

After a week of practice, Jantar was able to reach into the spirit realm and grip the essence of a sessile plant. She then learned to twist and shape the plant into a form of her choosing. It’s uses were many including the option to wrap an enemy in vines, or impale them with thorns.

The Nightsister explained that, with continued practice, the technique would invoke ‘green spirits’ to generate a ‘calming aura of meditation’ or break down poisons that had infected the bloodstream.

Jantar vowed to continue in her studies.

The next lesson involved the use of spirit ichors. It was the base for all magick employed by the Nightsisters. According to the Book of Shadows, it came from channelling the Winged Goddess and manifested as green smoke.

Jantar learned that spirit ichor could be manipulated in a large variety of ways. You could manipulate spirit ichor into physical objects such as a goblet or even a lightsaber. It was no illusion but a physical manifestation. Spirit ichor could also be used for divination; for mesmerism, to induce a victim into a trancelike state; for totem magic; or (as she had already learned) to conjure the Water of Life for healing purposes and other uses.

The final use the Zabrak showed Jantar was to produce a mist that allowed her to operate ‘midway’ between the physical and spirit realms, cloaking them with near-invisibility.

The following spell that Jantar learned was the Spell of Interpretation. This was a technique used by the Witches of Dathomir that would allow them to translate a language and speak it in kind.

Any language, including droid-speak could be understood. This knowledge of a language, however, was temporary and artificial, as it only lasted as long as the spell was kept active.

The Speed of the Toocha was a technique, where a Nightsister was imbued with short bursts of blindingly fast speed and energized leaps to cover remarkable distance. It was, as Jantar learned it, a variation of Force speed.

Then the Zabrak showed Jantar the Sense of the Veshet. This allowed her to distinguish scents carried by the wind up to one hundred metres away, and to see on a moonless pitch-black night. The name of this technique referred to the veshet, a species of large rodents with a keen sense of smell and night-vision.

Should Jantar not have access to the Water of Life, the Zabrak showed her the Revitalization of the Whuffa. Jantar learned to revitalise the body, or, with a sufficient will, even allow the re-growth of a limb. The technique's name came from the regenerative powers of the Whuffa worm.

“Choono slalem denni tay'lori olee-ay. Lucheno vadem klavlane. Blenay vedi nalem koreem. Blenay vedi nalem koreem. Villos susko kono lamal! Vlemon tagoo!”

The Chant of Resurrection was a powerful dark spell of Dathomir Magic that could temporarily resurrect the dead, so long as the caster remained active. And like all Nightsister magicks, the spell appeared as a green mist.

Mindspeech was a Force power wielded by the Witches of Dathomir that was akin to Telepathy. Once learned, Jantar was able to project her image and voice into the head of anyone she was in contact with – be it line of sight, video or audio.

Mesmerism was another Nightsister technique that was provided by spirit ichor. This power allowed Jantar to override the thought of those weaker than herself, similar to Mind Trick. A tap of the fingertip to the victim's forehead would induce a trancelike state and make the victim powerless to refuse commands.

The Ears of the Chiroptix was a Nightsister spell that gave the user increased hearing capabilities. It allowed Jantar to hear ‘whispers’ and to, in essence, see with sound by painting pictures of hidden places from the sounds emanating from those places – similar to radar used by bats – or the Force sense Force Sight.

The name originated from the chiroptix, a creature from Dathomir with a keen sense of hearing.

Control web, known by some as Crawler's Perch or Guiding Net, was a Force power wielded by the Nightsisters of Dathomir. The control web had to be initiated by several Nightsisters, in order to control the minds of creatures beneath the web.

A blood trail was a technique where a Nightsister would use her own blood to mark her target and track them through the blood mark using the Force in case they escaped. What was most useful was the fact that the shed blood used for a blood trail could not be removed once the trail was set.

The Aspect of the Storm was a technique that could turn the inky blackness of the sky into bright, white threads of lightning strikes. As Jantar learned it, she likened it to Force storm.

Her training concluded, Jantar left the Nightsister’s clan. She had spent a year in their company and knew that she owed them a debt – not only of gratitude, but a real favour, to be called upon at a time and place of the Clan Mother’s choosing. But, whereas Jantar was wary when she made the bargain, now she considered it fair payment. She had a bond with the Nightsisters. She had undertaken their trials and learned all of their magick. She was, essentially, a Nightsister herself.

And she felt the need to acknowledge the fact somehow. And then it occurred to her.
