Public The Aurelia Grand Intercept

LOCATION: THE COCOON, NAR SHADDAA // SYSTEM OVERRIDE PROTOCOL

The physical universe was entirely too slow.

Inside the cluttered warmth of his Nar Shaddaa penthouse, Static lay back into the deep cushions of his terminal couch. The black datajack on his neck was warm, his mind completely untethered from his pale flesh. He didn't care about the toxic sky outside his window. Right now, he was a ghost slipping through the cooling pipes of the Aurelia Grand—a hyper-exclusive corporate luxury hotel towering over the entertainment sectors.

He was after a specific prize: the unencrypted financial ledger of a major off-world shipping conglomerate. He had bypassed the external firewall, scrubbed his digital signature, and reached the central server bank. He was seconds away from siphoning the credits and slipping back to his cocoon.

Then, a physical alarm tripped on the hotel floor below him. Someone else was in the building. Someone sloppy.

The security mainframes flared to high alert, deploying combat droids and initiating a full environmental lockdown. Red hazard lights flashed across the luxury penthouse suites. Annoyed that his clean heist was being ruined by an amateur, Static didn't disconnect. Instead, he hijacked the local grid. He seized control of the security cameras, the blast doors, and the terminal screens on the secure floors.

Suddenly, the image of a smooth, white porcelain mask with completely empty eye sockets materialized on the nearest wall monitor right in front of the intruder. A sharp, neon-blue audio waveform sliced across the lower half of the porcelain, bouncing wildly as Static's distorted voice echolocated through the corporate intercom.

"You are loud. You are sloppy. And you are ruining my download speeds.

The corporate security droids just deployed heavy sub-repeaters on the lift sectors. They will be on your floor in less than forty seconds. I can lock the blast doors and wipe your biometric trail from their tracking grid, or I can let them turn you into paste.

If you want to survive the night, look at the screen and talk to the mask. What are you bringing to the table?"

Ana froze only for the briefest instant as the blank porcelain mask bloomed across the terminal in front of her. Most people would have recoiled. She leaned in instead, her eyes narrowing as she studied the distortion in the waveform rather than the face itself. The interruption wasn't part of the hotel's systems. It was too clean, too deliberate. Whoever had inserted themselves into the network hadn't simply hacked a monitor. They had taken ownership of the infrastructure. Cameras, intercoms, displays... all of it belonged to the voice now.

"Well," she said evenly, looking directly into the empty eye sockets, "if your download speeds are suffering because of me, then you have my condolences." Her blaster remained lowered. There was little point in threatening someone who wasn't physically in the room. "But if you have this much control over the building, you already know I'm not here for your ledger." She glanced toward the corridor as the distant mechanical thud of security shutters echoed through the floor. Forty seconds sounded less like a bluff and more like a countdown from someone watching the deployment firsthand.

Her attention returned to the mask, her expression calm despite the urgency around her. "What I'm bringing to the table is competence." There wasn't any bravado in the statement, only quiet confidence. "I don't interfere with your job, you don't interfere with mine. You get your clean extraction, I get out of the building before those droids arrive, and neither of us has to spend the evening wondering whether the other is going to become a recurring problem." A faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "That seems like a better arrangement than introducing ourselves with malware and blaster fire."

Static didn't break character, but inside his dim sanctuary, his fingers twitched against the cushions of his terminal couch. Her lack of a reaction was... unexpected. Most people panicked when the architecture turned against them. Instead, she leaned in. She studied the waveform.

A neural impulse fired through his datajack, and a localized subroutine instantly pulled up the cameras monitoring the specific vault sector she had bypassed. He didn't look at her face; he looked at her digital footprint. She hadn't touched the shipping conglomerate's mainframe lines. She was hunting a completely different node.

The distant mechanical clanging of the security shutters continued to echo down the luxury hallways of the Aurelia Grand. Thirty seconds left. The security droids were cycling their sub-repeaters on the lift matrix below. Static liked competence. Algorithms were built on competence, and flesh-and-blood people were usually far too erratic to trust.

He tracked her lowered blaster through the camera lens, his automated download bar hitting ninety-two percent in the background. If she wanted to play a clean game of logistics, he was more than happy to act as the dealer.

"Competence is a high-value currency on this moon. Rare, too. You're right. My logs show you didn't touch the shipping ledger. But whatever you are pulling from the hospitality server grid is drawing enough power to trip the local thermal sensors. Like I said...sloppy.

My download just finished, which means I have no reason to stick around. Consider this a free sample. I am dropping the security locks on the maintenance shaft behind you and scrambling the lift sensors to buy you three minutes. But that only gets you out of the wing. I'll admit, I'm intrigued. What brought you there tonight? Spill the beans, and I might just help you make it all the way out. Bore me, and I'll just delay what's coming.

I'm also leaving a scrambled routing packet on your deck. If you survive the night, decode it. It's a direct line to the mask. Next time you plan on hitting a high-end corporate vault, skip the alarm phase entirely and route the job through me first. The elevator doors just opened on the south side.

Tick-tock, little lady. Do we have a deal?"
