Time was a funny thing. It could move fast or slow and what passed never changed. JJ was not sure how quickly time had passed since he had expressed his feelings to Kes on Kashyyyk. All he knew was that too much of it had. They both had an understanding. For him it explained why she had reached out to him when her life was in danger, and for her it seemed to explain why the message did not reach her master, the elder Judah. They had simply left the truth at that, the truth. JJ and Kestrel had feelings for each other, but neither had truly acted upon them.

Their paths as Jedi led them to different places more often than not. Life had not allowed them to align duty with personal. They were Jedi first and foremost, and this had been what they decided. Part of the Corellian Jedi did not like how they had left things. There had been times before when he had chosen his duty over his feelings, and the result had not been favorable. For now it seemed to work, but JJ could not help but feel the tension which came as the natural result of being near the woman he knew he loved.

It was difficult, but the pair at least found ways to maintain a friendship. Scheduled meetings, time taken away from the order together, dinner when they could spare it, had all become options they exercised. While Kestrel had not thought JJ would have been welcomed on a visit to a former student, he had tagged along with his mother’s ship to give them a bit more space to have some sort of vacation afterward.

On this instance time passed far too slowly. The meal he had been preparing for her return was taking way too long to finish, but he was determined to prepare something he was certain she had not had in quite a while. His father had an exceptional talent when it came to smoking meat, and JJ had picked up the same passion. He enjoyed it, but even more he loved the reaction he got from people when they tried whatever dish was set before them.

“It’s almost done,” he hollered out from the galley as he heard her footsteps carry her up the boarding ramp. “Just pull up a chair, and I’ll be there soon!”

And just like that, he was nervous.
