- Battleship-Grade Armor: Thaldonium Capital is incredibly resilient, providing excellent protection surpassing that of most other steels against the standard suite of turbolasers, laser cannons, missiles, and proton torpedoes faced by capital ships in combat.
- Acid Vulnerable: Thaldonium has no inherent resistance to acid from chemical weapons or dangerous atmospheres, both of which can quickly erode the alloy and significantly weaken its structure.
- Not a Radiation Suit: Thaldinium offers little resistance to radioactive particles aside from its high density. Worse yet, the alloy is excellent at transmitting radiation to other components of a ship and its high density renders it very difficult to remove radioactive elements short of scrapping the entire armor plate.
Thaldonium Capital Alloy is one of the two cornerstones of Alge Imperial's shipbuilding operations.
The concept that would later become Thaldonium first emerged in 898 ABY in @FN-999's Borosk-based Imperial remnant. Recognizing that he could save costs over the long-term by manufacturing his own alloy rather than licensing them from other corporations, FN-999 commissioned a team of researchers in the Borosk Imperial Shipyard to create a combat-rated alloy for fitting the next generation of Imperial warships.
Two years later, the newly privatized shipyard administration under Alge Imperial continued its work on the alloy, intending to use it as a core revenue-generating product. During the development process, it was decided that to maximize combat effectiveness there would be two separate alloys: Alloy Lx, a light and flexible alloy for starfighters as well a small craft, and Alloy Hx, a heavier and more resilient alloy for capital ships. Additionally, both alloys were designed to have durability and blast resistance exceeding that of titanium. Development was completed in 901 ABY, followed by both alloys entering mass production.
Alloy Hx was developed into the Thaldonium Capital Alloy, named after the lead researcher of the Hx project, Thallus Vernon. Thaldonium has no special features or quirks, instead distinguishing itself for its exceptional resistance to conventional ship-mounted weapons. Thaldonium can be purchased in four standard square-shaped sheets: 3m x 3m x 0.5m, 5m x 5m x 0.75m, 10m x 10m x 1m, and 50m x 50m x 5m, as well as individual orders with custom dimensions or shapes for a higher price. On extremely large vessels such as battlecruisers, Super Star Destroyers, orbital installations, and large space stations, thaldonium plates can be stacked on top of each other to provide sufficiently thick armor. Heavier, thicker armor scales up the base resistances of thaldonium: while a 0.5m thick plate of thaldonium can resist several blasts from a laser cannon, a 10m thick plate can endure dozens of proton torpedoes or multiple heavy turbolaser bolts before fracturing. However, thaldonium's weaknesses remain unchanged at any thickness.
