STRENGTHS:

 • The Tenchu sports some of the greatest defense of any ship in its class or ship period, from its tried and true wedge design, armored engines and CIC buried within the superstructure, high ion/emp resistance, and its multiple layers of defense that begin outside of the engagement range of many attack craft. It’s also one of the few ships designed to be able to withstand hits from extreme kinetic weapons like HVCs.

 • Attempting to trade blows with the Tenchu in full frontal attacks is usually a recipe for disaster, as it can put opposing battlecruisers or even flagships to task with its powerful weapon systems like its main spinal mounted HVC gun and proton beam cannons.

 • Like most mass driver weapons, the main HVC gun can fire different kinds of munitions.

 • A comprehensive sensor suite that can pick out most stealth targets even while using sensor baffling features like stygium cloaks or GAMs.

 • Its automated fire control systems and defensive measures allow the Tenchu to adapt more quickly to threats as an entire system as its kill chain practically reduced to the commander issuing order and the ship’s control systems acting upon them and providing rapid feedback.

 • HIMS and it’s class 0.5 Hyperdrive allow it to get to locations quickly, and bypass gravity traps that may lie in wait.
WEAKNESES:

 • While the Tenchu has better coverage than most ships of the wedge design, most of its weaponry is focused forward, leaving it vulnerable to determined attackers that can get through its defensive envelopes.

 • Its single most powerful weapons - the spinal mounted HVC and proton beam cannons - are fixed and so require the ship to basically be pointed right at target for aiming. They essentially become useless in close “knife-fight” ranges as the Tenchu is much too slow and bulky for rapid turning against smaller faster craft close up.

 • The main gun has lengthy cooldown time akin to a super laser, and forward deflector shields at the bow of the ship must be lowered, creating a momentary gap during firing.

 • Use of the Angel Eye Suite can cause a severe drain on shielding systems - 10% - so special consideration must be taken when choosing to deploy the system. Additionally, it only provides coverage for detecting stealthed vehicles using GAMs out to 500 meters.

 • Because of the ship’s major functions being automated under a centralized control system, it is possible for a small group of boarders to gain control virtually all of the ship's systems through physical access to a terminal, attackers having the greatest chance of success through direct seizure of the CIC.

 • While the Tenchu performs well for itself in anti-starfighter defense (you need the equivalent of several air wings to even start thinking about bombing runs), it still needs an escort against bigger “ship-killers” like assault cruisers. This can be especially problematic if it’s not paired with escorts that are not similarly equipped with HIMS or fast hyperdrives, which can eliminate the benefits of speed advantage it enjoys in hyperspace travel or its ability to skip over grav traps.
DESCRIPTION

Tenchu (“Heaven’s Wrath”) is a heavy battlecruiser class meant to function as a dreadnought and command ship. It is one of the several classes currently being rolled out as the next generation of starships for the SIlver Jedi and their allies. Development began on the Tenchu shortly after the Sith Order’s invasion of the Stygian Caldera and subsequent Mandalorian incursions into Silver Space. With both the Sith and Mandalorians known to have obscenely powerful warships at their disposal through several iterations of existence, senior naval officers and Jedi commanders felt the need to develop a new series of destroyers in the event of full-scale warfare with said groups.

Design

The Tenchu has a wedge-shape layout very similar to many other Destroyers in its class, to help improve defenses and to better focus forward fire. However, the Tenchu takes some obvious design cues from Mon Cala designers involved in the project. It has much better coverage than most ships of the wedge designs, as several banks of capital weapons can be mounted in the rear where the engines would usually be located, thanks to the use of reactionless Shaywer drives that can be nestled deep within the superstructure. It has a relatively low profile, its CIC also buried within the superstructure instead of being located within an exposed tower.

The honeycomb superstructure is comprised of strong but lightweight ferrocarbon embedded with neutronium to improve structural integrity by spreading shocks across the entire surface of the frame. Additionally, anti-concussion field generators are incorporated to further improve the resilience of the frame by using force fields to actively disperse impact along with the neutronium. This layout was created to address the increasingly common use of mass driver weapons in combat, ships defense previously only being developed mostly with directed energy weapons in mind.

For resistance against ion attacks and EMPs, just about all of the ship is wired with organic photonic circuitry, which doesn’t use electricity, but light for transmitting signals. Legacy electronic systems integrated into the main wiring of the ship are protected by cap drains and energy sinks. The composite hull provides an additional layer of defense, hardened against such attacks.

The internal layout of the ship is intentionally made to be difficult to navigate with a labyrinthine structure, making it easy for foreign boarders to lose their way during assaults. Additionally, individual halls can be locked down with shielded blast doors comprised of reinforced duraplast capable of magnetic sealing. Major halls are covered by fixed emplacements like paralysis beam emitters and glop aerosol dispensers. The CIC in particular is protected by its own dedicated Executive Suite also sourced from Sasori.

Powerplant/Propulsion

The whole platform is powered by a pair of compact but extremely high output Isotope-5 reactor (Sasori Gincho) sourced from Sasori. As with the most critical systems of the Tenchu, it is located deep within the superstructure without needing to sacrifice the integrity of the hull with any protrusions that are common with standard hypermatter reactors.

Shawyer drives are the primary sub-light drive systems of the Tenchu. As they require no exhaust ports for propulsion, they have been also placed within the superstructure for their protection and to eliminate a traditional weakpoint for most ships. Their placement and mechanics allow the Tenchu to have some good pitch and yaw movements for fine adjustments like with the use of standard vernier thrusters, allowing the ship to rotate independently of its course or overall momentum. This allows for some interesting maneuvers that allow the Tenchu to minimize its profile while lining up to optimize fire against target vessels.

Featuring both a speedy class .5 hyperdrive system, as well as a hyperwave inertial momentum sustainer, the Tenchu can quickly traverse across sectors and bypass various kinds of gravity traps like Empion mines. This was deemed a crucial feature, as forces like the Sith have been known to suddenly drop into system with full battle groups, featuring heavy hitters like the Immortal-class dreadnought.

Otherwise, it features a rather standard set of other propulsion systems like repulsor lifts that allow it to operate within gravity wells or planetside, though it is never meant to land like a dedicated assault carrier.

Sensors/Comms

The Tenchu features a robust package of sensors and communication systems that allow it to function well even under heavy interference/electronic attack, like laser based tracking systems and quantum communication (biocomm). For detecting stealthy bodies, even using gravitic amplitude modulators (GAMS), it utilizes both a standard crystal grav trap, as well as the innovative angel eye sensor suite

Avionics/Software

The centerpiece of the Tenchu is Subutai Tactical Analysis System, works to automate much of the operation of the vessel to free up precious manpower for other important functions, working hand in hand with powerful bio-computers capable of parallel processing. Subutai also works to improve the combat performance of its host vessel in real time as it adapts to hostile forces. The Hydra Mesh Networking System is utilized as a force multiplier for seamless coordination between other vessels hooked into the same network. These systems together make the Tenchu ideal for the role as a command ship.

Merlin holographic displays are used to provide commanders detailed, immersive displays to improve their situational awareness and further streamline the task of directing their forces.

For security, installations of both the CRESH operating system as well as Mithril Security Software, requiring serious effort on the part of enemy slicers and/or AI to crack its heavily encrypted systems and communications which utilize deep learning (Mithril) to actively develop new countermeasures to slicing attempts.

Armor/Defenses

Against attack craft, the Tenchu’s first layer of defense is actually its batteries of plasma torpedo launchers. In ideal scenarios, it is possible to wipe out entire fighter groups before they ever come into effective range to deliver their payloads. From there, attack craft must go through the hell of interlocking layers of fire from different weapons systems like its Deimos positron cannons and Vespa Auto-rippers. Along with active protection systems like Casper, and electronic protection system like its Nordoxicom Anti-concussion fields, all these fast-tracking systems work well for anti-ballistic defense against a myriad of projectiles.

When these defenses fail to stop opposing attack craft or capital ships, next comes in it molecular shielding, which not only stops projectiles but also absorbs and redirects the power of energy based attacks into is own systems.

Past the shields is two armor systems, the setup inspired by advanced main battle tanks. The outer system is comprised of modular blocks of non-explosive reactive armor, made up of an outer plate neutronium impregnated agrinium, an inner layer of synthetic rubber, and a backplate of depleted baradium. Upon impact, the rubber liner will bulge to increase the overall thickness at the affected point, while also dispersing energy with its outer plate. Especially heavy or repeat attacks on the same block will render them ineffective at block any further attacks, but outside of battle they can be replaced by repair ships or some equivalent.

The last layer of defense is its passive armor system, which is a composite layout designed to be ultra-dispersive of both kinetic and energy based attacks working together with covering reactive armor modules, and also protects the more sensitive underlying electronic systems from ions and electromagnetic pulses.

Offensive Systems

The Tenchu’s main gun is a single massive hypervelocity cannon build along the entirety of its superstructure, inspired by such main guns used by the Darkblade and Noblesse. On its own, the main gun can wholly destroy or severely cripple targets in the event of successful hits, but is often fired in tandem with its quartet of proton beam cannons to run down a ship’s shielding to ensure maximum damage.

Its other offensive systems give the Tenchu good coverage at just about all ranges of engagement, with versatile mass driver weapons that form the bulk of its weaponry, ideal for wiping out older ships designs not built with kinetic weapons in mind. Wits its large complement of Deimos batteries, it is an absolute nightmare to unshielded targets, most armor system ineffective against the phenomena of matter-antimatter annihilation.

As with most modern warships, it is equipped with a large complement of Erebus jamming arrays for electronic attack, capable of crippling communications and targeting systems.

Right off the bat I can tell you two things. First is I love this ship and would love to see the SJO get something fancy to play with.

Second is that it is wildly overgunned, by several orders of magnitude. The other big-gun battlecruisers are all sitting right around 2500-3000 turbolaser equivalents, and they would all rate 'Extreme' under the new rating.

I'll leave it to you for now to make adjustments, unless you'd like my help. I will note that the infamous Nova Cannon on the Barsen'thor is worth only 500 turbolasers, and that alone borders on superweapon status.

Hi there, thank you very much. This is my first big ship, so please bear with me as I experiment in this new system.

Okay, so I worked off the gun count I pulled from the 3000m vanilla heavy battlecruiser example, then just did a straight up exchange to come up with my current composition. Do I still have to work within that template (eg "Only these 3000 turbolaser points can be spent on some equivalent") or am I free to exchange the points how I like? Or if this is any issue of my counts being wrong, then I'll go back and make sure I didn't add anything extra, which is just a typo on my part.

Well first off I can say with confidence that the '3000 Defense Guns' listed under the template is a typo. That should be 300.

You're free to exchange as you like, but the 3000 Turbolasers and 80 Heavy Launchers gives you approximately 4600 Turbolaser equivalents to work with.

You're still way overgunned. I'm guessing there's something that's unclear in the rules leading to the confusion here. Can you let me know how you're doing the math, and I'll double check I'm doing things right on my end so we can clear this up.

[member="Arisa Yune"]

Ah, I see it now. That's my mistake then.

Overall a very balanced design and upon further review I concur with the rating of 'Very High.' You definitely focused on defenses here. Just need some clarity or minor changes on a few points.

Alright first off that main gun. I am simply not comfortable with a weapon worth 770 turbolasers without any additional description. That's borderline superweapon territory. The way I see it you have two main options here.

1. Reduce the strength of the spinal mount gun to around 500 turbolasers, equivalent to the Nova Cannon and elaborate on its specific strengths and weaknesses.
2. Sub a separate weapon and go ham on the count, but it will still need to be balanced.

Second, I'd like you to cut the number of Vespa 40mm's in half. There is not, to my knowledge, a clear comparison of how starfighter weapons trade to defense emplacements but I don't think 4-to-1 is the way to go. That's as much fussing with gun math as I'm going to do, though.

Third, you have low crew count as a weakness, but also have a note that this ship is carrying an entire armored corp plus some change. I get that the description notes seizing CIC and the like, but that still seems like the sort of thing that would be easy to prevent with 180 tanks, you know?

Lastly, the Angel Eye sensor has a range limited to 500m, right? That would seem to make the ability of the ship to get a fire control solution on stealth targets somewhat limited, though with a conventional CGT you'd still know they're there. Can you clarify on this matter for me?

[member="Cyrus Tregessar"]

I can spread out some points from my main gun across the rest of the systems, and I’m fine about the conversion rate for the Vespa, I honestly just did a straight up 4 for 1 since I’m new with this. I’ll do that tonight when I have desktop access, because editing over mobile has been a pain to do as of late.

Okay, so on the weakness about seizing control of the ship. What I meant is that since the whole ship is control by a centralized system, gaining access to the system would essentially give someone free reigns to do what they like regardless of the state of the defenders. Then the whole ship can become a slaughterhouse in the face of internal defenses. The fear of one big central system being compromised was one of the reasons that the Republic switched using single all powerful AI to using multiple independent droids for support and management, as detailed in the old EU Thrawn novels concerning the automated Dreadnaughts of the Katana fleet.

What I can do here is soften the language to say that it’s possible to seize control of the ship from any terminal access point on the ship, but the easiest route to take control is to physically seize the CIC.

And you’re right about the Angel Eye Suite. From my writing, I can see how people just glossing over that list and those bullpoints could be left confused. In the weakness bit about the Angel Eye Suite, I’ll be sure to detail that it has an incredibly limited range on detecting stealthed objects using GAMs. The standard CGT is used for detecting other stealth objects not using GAMs.
