Technology Creation 101 - Factory 101

Alright Ladies and Gents. Here is the kick off for the Factory 101 series I will be doing. So for the first part, I will do the Technology portion because so many technology subs are put in every day. I will be taking The Technology Template and simplifying it for you guys. *looks down at the wall of words* MAYBE? *shrugs shoulders*

If you have any questions, You may ask in this forum, or in The Factory 101 forum that I have started.

Let us begin.

Image Source: (Please link to where you found the image, or to the original artist if possible. TinEye or Google Image Search can help.)

- Image Source does not really need to be explained, but I will do it anyways. This is were you put the link of the page, or site where you found your picture. OR you can mention the artist/Company/whatever had the picture you are using. For example. Because my playby is of Vincent Valentine for most of his pictures, I can get away with putting "Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus, Vincent Valentine" While you may have a use from a picture of a weapon, then just name the weapon. A third option is to put the link of the picture in here, though the first to are preferred.

Intent: (Example: 'A personal weapon for Darth Scabious' or 'an advanced armored personnel carrier for the Republic')

- This is probably the most important part of the sub. This is where you state your needs/desires/wants about this sub. Why are you making such a thing? Why make it instead of using something else? OR reasons why you want an item like this. If you put something along the lines of "For the Lol's #Yolo" then you are not going to pass anything off. Everything here is done for a purpose. Don't waste the judges time.

Development Thread: (The main way people work for their toys, though most submissions don't require a development thread. Restricted items require specific development threads. Substantial development threads can help judges approve more powerful submissions. If in doubt, put 'If necessary,' and a judge may or may not ask you for one. Threads cited here must be at least 10 quality posts.)

- Ladies and Gents, this is where the real work is done. Development, or Dev for short, Threads are threads in which your character, or others who work for you, take part in that helps in the creation of the item you so desire to have. "What is a Dev thread Nick?" Why thank you for asking! A Dev thread can be any thread that is done towards the completion of this item.

Now, Most of the time you will see people do 'Private' or "Dev" labeled threads to do gain a rare item or material. However! you can do mention threads where you simply mention the item or items in the thread without actually using them, or pertaining to the overall theme of that one thread. Another type of thread is a Fail/Progression thread. where you are actually using the item(s) in a test. So say for a ship, you have a droid test the ship and because of an engine failure, the ship crashes. Well now you have to scrap that idea IC and build a new engine to try and fix that problem. One more thread is a Planning thread. Yes. Simply talking, or planning out the details between you and a few buddies about what you are doing, the specifics of what it can do. Literally a good 10-20 post thread on "How in the hell does this work?" Lastly is the Building threads. Literally you build the item be it a sword, Lightsaber, ship, or you are a supervisor over others working on a station or ship, or facility. Whatever it may be.

Manufacturer: (Kuat Drive Yards, BlasTech Industries, [Character Name], etc.)

- Basically who makes this item? Is it a company? Many companies? One person, or many people. List them here. As well if you are using items from other companies to make a combination of gear, then list the companies that made each of those items as well. Makes it easier for the judges so they don't have to dig for more than the already have to.

Model: (Example: E-11 Blaster Rifle. For submissions where a model wouldn't be appropriate, such as a custom walking stick, put 'N/A' for 'Not Applicable'.)

- What is it's name? So an idea for ships would be classes. "Aleph-Class Starfighter" is an example. Another would be swords or unique weapons. "Death's Claw" for a sword or a really nasty looking lightsaber. OR you can just put "N/A" or "Not Applicable" because you don't have one awesome name to give something.

- Now, if you have a custom ship that is already made from Star Wars Canon, or Site Canon, then put the name of the item in the model with the desired awesome unique name in "Quotation marks" Because if you make a custom ship from an existing YT-1300, And only put "Raiders Cross" the judges might be confused on why it is called that. What we need here is good communication between you and the Judge.

Affiliation: (Example: The E-11 Blaster Rifle was produced for the Galactic Empire and used almost exclusively by Imperial Stormtroopers. Do not put the company unless the product is only for your company's use. Common choices include 'Open market' or the name of a specific faction.)

- Now, Weapons that are mass produced are generally owned by a faction or a company. So if they are owned by a faction or a group of factions, then list those here. If owned by a company, it would be Open Market, and depending upon the materials used, or the rarity of items, it can be listed as "Those who have holes in their pockets with a lot of money" Something along those lines. When owned by one person, or by many people, but ONLY those specific people, list Independent. meaning that the person owns it if they buy it and use it.

Modularity: (Can components of this submission be swapped out for other components? Is it especially easy to modify? For most submissions, put 'No'.)

- Can your item(s) have attachments? An example would be a rifle. You have Suppressors, laser sights, Scopes, Bipods, vertical foregrips, slings, ammo packs on the buttstock, color designs. There is so much you can do to a gun. BUT! can your item have things added to it? If so list them here. Now an item like a Sith Sword, or Alchemy treated armor will not have modularity. If they do, it is very little. Something like a cloak or extra ammo or different weapon loadouts. Think reasonably. If it can't then either put "No" or "N/A" Either works.

Production: (The scale is Unique, Semi-Unique, Limited, Minor, Mass-Produced. More powerful submissions are more likely to be approved the fewer of them there are. There are no numbers associated with these.)

- How many of these items are there? Lets start from left to right.
  • Unique, Meaning that there is ONLY ONE in the Galaxy.
  • Semi-unique means there are Two A pair, or just One TYPE of this item, but only a few (less than three people) own one.
  • Limited, meaning that it is used by others, but with restrictions. Like some crystals for lightsabers are limited because only Light Sided Force users, or only Dark Sided force users can use that specific crystal. OR you need some special license to use this. Something along those lines.
  • Minor, meaning they are made for use, but are only used by PC, or Player Characters. OR this can be only in minor production because ships cannot be made on a Mass produced scale for minor factions. See the Key word in there? Minor Faction, is Minor production. *winky face*
  • Mass Produced, its a common item. Made often, and just about anyone can get one. Go to your Local store and grab some milk. That is a Mass produced item.

Material: (What is it made out of? Certain materials are more resistant, or vulnerable, to certain weapons. Example: 'Durasteel, blaster components.')

- What are the items or materials that are used in the creation of this item? As such. Most ships are made out of Durasteel. Or most lightsabers are made out of Bone or Durasteel as well. Armor? Duraplast, Armorplast, Durasteel. Maybe some leather in there as well. Now Something more complicated like a Sith Sword can use just about anything. However because it is an item made out of Sith/Force Alchemy, Sometimes people list that it is made out of Alchemy or Sith Magic here. Make sure to list ALL the materials made. If you leave something out, it can be denied, BUT most likely the judges will just ask you to change or edit your post to remove or add items.

Description: (Include some strengths and weaknesses here. Describe some of the history behind the submission. Give us some idea of how it might perform its function, what it excels against and what some limitations of it are. This is where you talk about your idea, flesh it out over at least a good-sized paragraph, and address some of the ways it might be used or abused. For especially powerful or ambitious submissions, a very thorough description is recommended.)

- This is where you will see the very long paragraphs and the nitty gritty details of the sub. What can the item(s) do? how do they function? What happens if they don't? What are the Pros and cons of the item. List in here who can use it and why only them? Does it have special powers? Abilities? you know, maybe you want to add a little extra and add a mythology of the item. OR you can even write out in detail about what happened over the course of the Dev threads (if you have one/them) This is where you bring in the big guns, sometimes literally, to make a shock and aw effect on the judges. This is where you can explain to them how it works, why it works, and most importantly, Why you want this item.

Special Features: (Even if you've discussed your features at length in the Description line of the Base Template, this is a good place to list them.)

- Almost like the description, What you put here is for the extra little goodie goodies that make the item special List them here. So an example would be a Sith sword. Can is be lightsaber resistant? is it nearly invincible to all forms of melee weapons? Does it have a Dark Sided Nexus of energy? What about blaster resistance? What type of battle style is it used for? Or what extra things did you add on? This is the unique stuff that you won't find on other subs. What makes it so? Answer here.

Now because that is only the simple version, I will be continuing with the smaller sections for each type of technology They will be listed down below and the descriptions on what they are, and how to work with them.
Ranged Weaponry
Classification: (Blaster, Slugthrower, Crossbow, etc)

- What type of weapon is it? is it a blaster? Slughthrower, or a earth like gun, A Mass Driver? maybe its a throwing knife? or a boomerang? Anything that is a ranged weapon can be listed here.
Size: (Handheld, Stationary, Ship-Mounted)

- Handheld, You know, Pistol, rifle, Held by the hand(s) can a person reasonably carry it? Stationary meaning is it mounted on a speeder? or is it a large enough weapon that it needs to be on a walker? The examples of this kind of weapon would be Anti-Air, Anti-Personal weapons. Ship-mounted are weapons that... are mounted on animals. NO! They are mounted on ships! The big guns that are use in ship battles to blow up other ships into oblivion!
Length: (Via Metric System)

- What is the length of the weapon? A pistol can be somewhere from about 15-30 cms long. Or even more. maybe by being mounted on a speeder they are longer maybe about half a meter long? Now for the big guns like a Ship mounted weapon, it could be a few dozen meters in length. All matters on the weapon, and its purpose in the battlefield.

Weight: (Via Metric System)

- How much does it way in standard (earth like) gravity? Pistols and rifles can be maybe a few hundred grams or about 2-4 kgs depending on it's size and materials it is made out of. Something like a Stationary weapon can weigh a good 30 or even a good 100 kgs. it cannot be carried by a human. Now Ship mounted weapons can weigh in the few hundreds of kgs, or even metric tons. Big difference people.

Ammunition Type: (Power cell, gas canister, bullets, etc. Example: Blasters require both a power cell and a gas canister.)

- Ammo type. For slugthrowers, list the earth like equivalent, or if you know the star wars version, list the type of round it uses. Blasters, List the Power cell and Gas canister. if you have a unique one that only one company uses, then list that. if it is an item like a knife that is thrown, then list it as "Thrown object"

Ammunition Capacity: (More powerful projectile weapons tend to have a lower capacity. Example: A heavy blaster pistol with a power pack capacity of 50 shots and a gas canister capacity of 350 shots. If in doubt, find a real-world equivalent or search Wookieepedia.)

- How much ammo can the weapon hold? Most slugthrowers can hold anywhere from 7-15 rounds. Blaster pistols can hold about 20-50. Now something larger like a Warhead launcher may only hold 2-5. A thrown object is the ammo itself so just list "One, Thrown object" and they can get the idea.

Effective Range: (Personal, Battlefield, Starfighter, Capital Ship. Feel no need to use numbers. 'Equivalent to a laser cannon' or 'equivalent to a standard blaster rifle' is acceptable. The more detail, the better. Also, remember this is effective range. A mass driver in space may have an infinite range, but it can only effectively hit targets at normal ship combat ranges.)

- How long can the round travel? Slugs can go anywhere from 25 meters to 2 kilometers depending on the weapon. Blasters can go even further than that! Something like a space ship weapon can reach even longer because of its higher power.

Rate of Fire: (Single action, pump action, semi-automatic, fully automatic, etc.)

- How fast can you fire the weapon?
  • Single shot/Action, Fires one round only before needing to reload. This also counts as thrown items or things such as bows, or crossbows. One arrow, one shot.
  • Pump action. Think shotgun. *Chuck chuck*
  • Semi-Automatic, As fast as you can pull the trigger!
  • Three round burst, One pull of the trigger, Three rounds leave the weapon in rapid secession.
  • Fully Automatic. Full Auto. You hold the trigger, and it fires until you let go, or you run out of ammo. RELOAD!

Melee Weaponry
Classification: (Dagger, Sword, Whip, etc.)

- What type of weapon is it? Sword, Dagger, Ax, hammer? What style of the weapon is it? Some swords have special names. Like Katana. or Odachi. Some are just Long swords. or even Short sword. Label it.

Size: (One-handed, Two-handed, etc.)

- Can it be used in one hand, or two hands? Generally it is either one of these two. Others can be mounted. Like a wristblade or a mounted sword on a glove or gauntlet.

Length: (Via Metric System)

- How long is the weapon? Swords can range to just about any size really. As well as whips and such. make sure to put it in the Metric system.

Weight: (Via Metric System. Note that most swords are 2-4kg.)

- Weight? yeah. How heavy is the weapon. Can it be used with one hand because it is light? or does it have to be used with two hands because it is so fething heavy! tell us here.

Armor/Armour
Weight: (Via Metric System. Appropriate weight varies by quality, material, and character species. For example, standard Mandalorian armor is around 10 kg. Armor made of true Mandalorian iron, or a full set of combat gear for a soldier in the field, can be around 25kg. For special items, try to find the weight of a real-world equivalent.)

- Once again. We meet Weight! Once again. Put it in here. Generally heavier armors will have a higher quality. So lighter armors have less quality. As well, Heavy armors have less movement, while light weight ones have very little hindrance to the movement of the wearer.

Quality: (Armor class is a measure of general stopping power. Most light armors would be classified as 1-4, most medium armors would be classified as 5-7, and most heavy armors would be classified as 8-10. However, rare or primitive materials, among other factors, can also affect armor class. For example, stormtrooper armor would be class 5, Mandalore's armor or beskar'kandar would be class 10, and a specially forged suit of personal armor for a high-ranking Force user could be anywhere from class 6-9 or thereabouts, depending on how much effort went into it. Many people choose lower armor classes for their custom armor in a trade off for more powerful equipment or specialized resistances, or simply for more mobility.)

- Most of it is explained above. Heavy or "Special armor will have a higher rating against forms of weaponry. People who use lighter armor will not have a huge amount of resistances to items. Now there are some things where they can offer good protect at a lighter weight. A material such as Songsteel. VERY VERY light, yet can withstand about the same damage as Phrik, and has the durability surpassing durasteel.

Droids
Classification: (First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, Fourth Degree, or Fifth Degree)

- What type of degree is it? The link provided above tells you the information that you need for this one.

Weight: (Via Metric System)

- Weight.... How heavy is the droid?

Height: (Via Metric System)

- How tall is the thing? Larger heights, mean heavier weights.

Movement: (Repulsorlift, Wheels, Tracks, Bipedal, Quadrupedal)

- How does it move around?
  • Repulsorlift, This of a floating droid. Ta da!
  • Wheels. You know Car wheels.
  • Tracks. meaning for tanks The big treads that make the incredibly loud clanging sounds. If you don't know what I mean, then watch a movie about WWII and you will get an idea.
  • Bipedal. meaning does it walk on two legs?
  • Quadraupedal. just like bipedal only with four legs instead of two.
  • There are other ways of how a droid can walk around. List it here.
Armaments: (What weapons does the droid possess, if any?)

- Armor? weapons? Special things that it can be used in or out of battle? List them here. So for Battle droids, you will see a few different weapons, For astromechs, you can see a wide range of tools that can be used. Almost any weapon a human can use, a droid can use as well.

Misc. Equipment: (Sensors, scanners, shields, etc.)

- As above. list other things that do not fit for the listing of armaments.

Yes. Any and all Judges (former or current) are allowed to Answer questions because they know first hand what to deal with. They will give you their opinion on things and give you an idea on what can be used or not be used.
