STRENGTHS

  • Reinforcement - Battery banks located within the Ship at aft and broadside can be used to reinforce the shields.
  • Overclock - Alternatively, ships fielding this module may use the battery banks to overcharge a portion of their shields, doubling capacity but draining the batteries. This effect lasts around 45 seconds to a minute. Safety protocols prevent this from being done again for 10 minutes. Ignoring this may result in overloads (see weaknesses).
  • Extreme Capacity - The Shields are designed to withstand the extreme atmospheric conditions of Gas Giants being able to operate under extreme heat, wind, and Ionic bombardment without failing. In the event of an attack, the shields are more than capable of withstanding bombardment from Capital Ship weaponry for an extended duration.
  • Ionic Resistance - Ion Storms and similarly powered weapons are less effective against this shield system. While it still causes issues, it's far harder to overload like traditional shield systems.
  • Environmental Protection - Svalinn is fully operational in hazardous zones, these include extreme temperatures, radiation, and ionic interference allowing a ship equipped with this technology to operate in the low atmosphere of gas giants, nebula, and other exotic regions.

WEAKNESSES
  • Overload - Overcharging the Shields multiple times has the potential to cause an Overload which will disable all ship functions, and potentially cause the Powerplant to become destabilised resulting in a meltdown event.
  • Vulunerable Emitters - Emitters if identified can be destroyed by smaller fighter and bomber squadrons to weaken or disable the shields.
  • Atmospheric Interference - Hyperdense shields restrict and limit communications range significantly while on full power. Most long-range communications become unreliable.
  • Power Draw - If used on a single Power Plant system the power draw significantly reduces a ship's engine power while charging.
  • Battery Degradation - Stressing the battery banks causes them to suffer gradual but tangible capacity loss requiring maintenance. This prevents battery banks from being used more than once or twice without risking an overload.
  • Due to the extreme nature of the Svalinn shield it becomes visible to the naked eye when hit by a projectile or weapon system appearing initially as a flash of light, then rippling across the surface. This makes it clear to observers where the shield has failed.

DESCRIPTION
Designed by Corvus Spire in 850 ABY the Svalinn Class Shield was built from the ground up with the Kardashev II in mind allowing the Starship to operate in extreme conditions not frequently visited by Governmental bodies or patrols. This enables the Kardashev II to operate with impunity from law enforcement or inspections securing Novean Technologies. Clients' interests where illegal or scarcely legal technologies are being researched.

While official specifications are confidential, safety tests conducted by Corellian Engineers place its capacity between 33,000~36,000 megatons. In comparison, the ISD-1 shield reactor has roughly 22,000~24,000 megatons.
