Schematics of the Summer heavy mass driver

Image Source: 16in/50 Mk7 on Wikipedia (removed reference to powder)
Intent: To provide a high-caliber mass-driver cannon
Development Thread: Beware the Republican Mascot! (34 posts)
Manufacturer: Ringovinda Systems
Model: 380mm/50 triple-barrel Summer heavy mass driver cannon
Affiliation: Open Market
Modularity: Yes: can change the shell type
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Superconductor coils (in the barrel), standard hypervelocity gun components, quadanium plating (turret), durasteel
Classification: Heavy mass driver
Size: Ship-Mounted
Length: 40 meters (turret included)
Weight: 1,500 tons dry
Ammunition Type: 380mm shells
Ammunition Capacity: 3,000 rounds
Effective Range: Equivalent to heavy long-range turbolasers
Rate of Fire: Heavy long-range turbolaser standard
Special Features: Acceleration coils
Strengths:
  • Can penetrate ray shields
  • Explosive firepower (multiple times the firepower of a standard heavy long-tange turbolaser)
  • Long range
Weaknesses:
  • Particle shields must be lowered to fire
  • Slow-tracking (almost useless against opponents smaller than cruisers)
  • Extremely large emplacement
  • Maintenance-intensive
  • Internally fragile
  • Requires shells or sabots to be made of magnetic materials
Description: The Summer heavy mass driver was designed under the auspices of the Republic's Sentinel Initiative in the Republic's final days, with Jessica at the head of the design team. This 380mm-caliber triple-barreled heavy mass driver gun is, simply put, scary to behold, especially since the high-explosive shells are fired at 2 km/s, thanks to acceleration coils mounted into the barrels, with about 500kg of a mixture of 97% tritonal/3% detonite as payload. Because that mass driver's shells are so massive, the three barrels are fired in a sequence, with an overall firing rate equivalent to a heavy long-range turbolaser. The explosive shells are designed to penetrate shipboard armor by sheer kinetic pressure and detonate upon impact. But changing the shell type requires either magnetic sabots or the shell casings to be made of magnetic materials for the mass driver to fire.

The turret itself must be integrated into the vessel, since the systems allowing processing of projectiles take up three decks underneath the barrel, and the rotational bearing takes an extra deck below the turret. As a result of the sheer size of the assembly, the Summer cannot be mounted on ships smaller than heavy cruisers; ships up to 1000m can only mount one. Each 500m beyond that allows to mount an extra Summer heavy mass driver on a ship. Accuracy is comparable to standard HVG accuracy, but the nature of acceleration coils makes it so that it requires a lot of maintenance outside combat to ensure the mass driver will work when in combat. As such it is expensive to both buy and maintain.

Rate of Fire: Burst fire (1 shell per second for either 15 or 30 seconds)
HVC fire multiple small caliber rounds. like 10 mm rounds at very high rates of fire and at very high velocities. what your talking about there is a velocity mass driver cannon which fires a high-velocity large round. and can not fire these massive rounds that rapidly. The magnetic charge has to be built back up to fire something this large, The massive coils would need more power than what smaller rail coils need. Pleas make the rounds smaller or the rate of fire much lower.

[member="Reshmar"] Would "standard heavy long-range turbolaser" firing rate work any better? (That's slower than 1 shot/second, or, for a barrel, 1 shot/3 seconds) Also, would mass-production even work on that thing (whatever that means to a heavy mass driver that counts for 90 standard turbolasers)? Or minor production would be adviseable?

[member="Jessica Med-Beq"] you will need to link the companies approved page not its marketplace in the manufacture field.

as far as mass production I believe your company is tier 3 which would give you the ability to produce it at mass production levels. If you feel it is too powerful to let anyone and everyone use it then lower the production levels and make it closed market or need some sort of purchase post or contract. other wise its good at tier 3 to produce.

and yeah standard heavy turbolaser rate of fire would be about the highest something this big could achieve.
