Private Step Beyond

Rynar looked back at her as she gave the instruction, the snow already collecting lightly across the darker plates of her armor, and despite the seriousness in her tone, something crooked and amused tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Yes, cyare," he said, with the exaggerated obedience of someone who absolutely deserved the warning.
He grabbed the helmet from under one arm, weighed it once in his hand like he was considering whether this was a brilliant idea or an extremely stupid one.

Then he tossed it upward.
The helmet spun once through the cold air.

And landed perfectly onto his head with a clean magnetic seal clack.
Rynar froze.

"…Huh."
A beat passed.

Then a short bark of laughter crackled through the external vocoder.
"First try," he said, sounding genuinely shocked. "That never happens."
He pointed vaguely at the helmet.

"You have no idea how many concussions I've gotten trying to do that." A pause. "Actually, maybe you do. That explains some things."
Because naturally the human decided head trauma was a performance art.
He trudged forward into the snow toward the still-visible tail, each step sinking deeper than the last until he was waist-deep and actively regretting every life choice that had brought him here.

"Cupcake," he called out through the helmet speaker. "You are losing credibility."
The tail flicked.
Then the nexu exploded upward out of the snow in a spray of white powder and pure chaos.
Rynar barely had enough time to get one arm under her before the full-grown nexu collided with him chest-first with all the restraint of a missile.
The snow beneath him gave instantly.

He vanished.
For a second, there was only a collapsing crater of snow and the muffled sound of a Mandalorian being spiritually defeated.
Then one armored boot slowly rose from the snowbank.
Cupcake proudly climbed onto the buried Rynar like she had successfully hunted him.

The nexu shook herself violently, spraying snow everywhere before settling directly on top of him, rumbling with thunderous satisfaction.
From somewhere beneath several hundred pounds of triumphant predator came Rynar's filtered voice:

"…I'm really glad I put the helmet on."
A pause.

Then, flatter:

"She absolutely did that on purpose."
Cupcake chuffed proudly, unrepentant.
Only the top half of Rynar's helmet and one arm remained visible now as he attempted, unsuccessfully, to push the massive creature aside.

The snow around them glittered softly in the pale light filtering into the cavern mouth, the silence broken only by Cupcake's victorious purring and Rynar's increasingly offended grumbling as the frozen world welcomed them in the dumbest way possible.

Dean watched the entire sequence unfold without intervening, not because she was incapable of preventing it, but because by the time the helmet had already left his hand she had recognized two things with absolute certainty: first, that Rynar was about to attempt something unnecessarily theatrical in subzero conditions, and second, that attempting to stop him would only encourage him to repeat the behavior later with even greater enthusiasm.

So she simply observed.

The helmet spun once through the cold air before locking perfectly into place with a sharp magnetic seal, and for the briefest moment, her attention sharpened in mild surprise at the success of it before his laughter crackled through the vocoder, carrying enough genuine disbelief that something subtle shifted at the edge of her expression despite herself.

"You continue to survive through statistically questionable methods," she said calmly, though there was a quieter warmth beneath the words now, something less guarded than it would have been only a few days earlier.

Her gaze followed him as he moved deeper into the snow, watching the terrain steadily consume more of his movement until determination began to compensate for practicality in increasingly visible ways, each step sinking farther than the last as the frozen surface resisted him with quiet persistence.

"Your mobility is deteriorating," she observed in the same matter-of-fact tone she might have used during an operational assessment, though the dryness beneath it remained unmistakable.

Then Cupcake exploded out of the snow.

The collision happened with such complete commitment that even Dean, who had fully expected poor decisions from both participants involved, paused for a fraction longer than usual as Rynar vanished entirely beneath a spray of snow and triumphant nexu.

For one suspended second, there was nothing but collapsing powder and muffled indignation.

Then a single armored boot emerged slowly from the drift like evidence from an archaeological site.

Dean looked at it in silence while Cupcake proudly climbed atop the buried Mandalorian and settled there with absolute satisfaction, her thunderous purring reverberating through the snowbank while Rynar attempted, unsuccessfully, to reclaim authority over a situation he had very clearly already lost.

Something in Dean's composure shifted then, not dramatically and not enough to resemble open laughter, but enough that the stillness around her softened visibly as a quiet breath escaped her, carrying the unmistakable shape of amusement.

"You are being hunted," she said at last, her voice low and even despite the warmth threading quietly beneath it. "Her strategy appears effective."

Cupcake rumbled proudly in response as if acknowledging the compliment.

Dean stepped forward through the snow with slow, deliberate movements that remained unaffected by either the cold or the depth beneath her boots, the environment registering as little more than background to her while pale snow drifted steadily across the dark surfaces of her armor.

When she reached the edge of the crater, she stopped there, looking down at the partially buried Mandalorian with the same composed focus she might have applied to a battlefield complication, except that her eyes were softer now, warmer in a way she rarely allowed herself to be openly.

"You were correct about the helmet," she continued after a moment, her gaze lingering briefly on the snow packed across his armor and the nexu currently pinning him into the landscape with complete confidence. "This would have been significantly less survivable otherwise."

Cupcake shifted more comfortably atop him in response, visibly pleased with both herself and the outcome.

Dean regarded the nexu for another quiet second before crouching near the edge of the drift, one forearm resting loosely against her raised knee while she studied the situation in thoughtful silence, as though genuinely considering the tactical implications of what she was observing.

"I believe she considers this enrichment," she said finally, delivering the statement with complete seriousness despite the absurdity of it.

Her attention shifted back toward the portion of Rynar still visible beneath the snow and predator.

"And based on observable evidence," she added, the faintest thread of dry humor settling beneath her usual precision, "you are now part of the habitat."

For a moment, she simply remained there, pale snow drifting lazily through the cavern entrance around them while Cupcake's purring rolled through the frozen quiet and Rynar continued his increasingly offended attempts to regain structural independence.

Then Dean lifted one hand slightly, and without any dramatic gesture or visible strain, the snow compacted around his buried arm loosened first, followed by part of the drift pinning his side, subtle applications of the Force easing the pressure without removing Cupcake outright.

She tilted her head slightly as she watched him emerge by degrees beneath the triumphant nexu.

"I am assisting selectively," she informed him calmly, her voice carrying that same composed certainty as before. "The remainder appears educational."
