Rynar looked back at her as she gave the instruction, the snow already collecting lightly across the darker plates of her armor, and despite the seriousness in her tone, something crooked and amused tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Yes, cyare," he said, with the exaggerated obedience of someone who absolutely deserved the warning.
He grabbed the helmet from under one arm, weighed it once in his hand like he was considering whether this was a brilliant idea or an extremely stupid one.
Then he tossed it upward.
The helmet spun once through the cold air.
And landed perfectly onto his head with a clean magnetic seal clack.
Rynar froze.
"…Huh."
A beat passed.
Then a short bark of laughter crackled through the external vocoder.
"First try," he said, sounding genuinely shocked. "That never happens."
He pointed vaguely at the helmet.
"You have no idea how many concussions I've gotten trying to do that." A pause. "Actually, maybe you do. That explains some things."
Because naturally the human decided head trauma was a performance art.
He trudged forward into the snow toward the still-visible tail, each step sinking deeper than the last until he was waist-deep and actively regretting every life choice that had brought him here.
"Cupcake," he called out through the helmet speaker. "You are losing credibility."
The tail flicked.
Then the nexu exploded upward out of the snow in a spray of white powder and pure chaos.
Rynar barely had enough time to get one arm under her before the full-grown nexu collided with him chest-first with all the restraint of a missile.
The snow beneath him gave instantly.
He vanished.
For a second, there was only a collapsing crater of snow and the muffled sound of a Mandalorian being spiritually defeated.
Then one armored boot slowly rose from the snowbank.
Cupcake proudly climbed onto the buried Rynar like she had successfully hunted him.
The nexu shook herself violently, spraying snow everywhere before settling directly on top of him, rumbling with thunderous satisfaction.
From somewhere beneath several hundred pounds of triumphant predator came Rynar's filtered voice:
"…I'm really glad I put the helmet on."
A pause.
Then, flatter:
"She absolutely did that on purpose."
Cupcake chuffed proudly, unrepentant.
Only the top half of Rynar's helmet and one arm remained visible now as he attempted, unsuccessfully, to push the massive creature aside.
The snow around them glittered softly in the pale light filtering into the cavern mouth, the silence broken only by Cupcake's victorious purring and Rynar's increasingly offended grumbling as the frozen world welcomed them in the dumbest way possible.
