Star Citizen (3.1 alpha)

I have been playing Star Citizen for a while now and absolutely recommend it to those that love realistic space games. Would also like to know who else plays the game to see if we can hook up and crew some ships together.

One thing this game will absolutely need is freedom for clothing designers. Actually make that a company thing, design clothes. Every organization that grows will want their own uniform!

I've been tracking Star Citizen for a few years now. Every now and then I log on to tinker a bit, but mainly I just sit on my hands and wait for the core gameplay mechanics to get flushed out. I love that they're getting the first steps of multi-crew and mining into the 3.2 PTU. They're tweaking ship performance to encourage engineering roles being useful in the larger ships and making it so Starfighters will need to monitor their power and shields a bit more (which also nerfs Starfighters a bit in the process). Oh, and they're making active ship scanning a thing, which is cool.

Once polished manual turret operation, co-pilot control of weapons, and internal component repair via multi-tool are all in the game, I'll probably start playing it to do more that test the flight model. I'm currently sitting on a 600i Explorer, Hammerhead, Carrack, Gladius, Hawk, 3 Nova Tanks, a Tumbril Cyclone, an Ursa Rover, and a Dragonfly. Got my fingers crossed that I'll be able to load those tanks into the Carrack for planetary operations. If that doesn't pan out... I'll scrap my vehicle package for something else. I also might swap that Gladius back into an Avenger if it turns out that the rework is able to change out that damned chaingun... The Hawk... I'm crossing my fingers that the Hawk will be able to squeeze into the Carrack's dorsal hangar. If not, that will get swapped out too.

[member="Captain Larraq"] wow, you got a nice selection. All i got is a Freelancer and a f7c Hornet. Don't get me wrong, I love my freelancer since i had spent a good majority of the game trying to survive in a aura due to my cheapness. Now i spend my time smuggling drugs with a proper cargo capacity of a freelancer. lol. Yes, this games potential is not just a ambitious dream. It is something they are actually achieving and that 3.2 should be coming out soon. Still a very much a fun game in its Alpha stages.

You should also post your referral code.

Freelancer and Hornet are both solid ships. But damn, the cockpit view on the Freelancer is painful.

And don't get me wrong... The intention was never to own three semi-capital ships.
The Carrack just grew too darned large for general use and I needed something smaller (with cheaper running costs) to tramp around in. Thus the 600i
And I was going to get the Hurricane for when I wanted to do space combat (since I am crap at piloting and shooting at the same time)... But the day I was going to get it, they announced the Hammerhead. And that is one sexy military escort.

So yeah. Three ships >90 meters.

I've put forth an investment in this game some years ago. I have an Origin 325A. Gorgeous fighter.
It's been probably closer to 2 years since I've set foot in the game though. I don't even have it installed right now. Perhaps I best look in to what's been done since then. Hopefully a lot of the bugs I faced have been quashed. Plus I have recently gotten a new video card. Should handle the game better.

How complete is this game now? Well when compared to Elite Dangerous and Eve Online? I have had interest in this game for a few years, but I have not installed it yet because the game was (or could still be) relatively in Alpha stage and well... I'm sick of the constant updating/patches etc - I play too many online games I guess. But seriously, I'm guessing this game will be better than Elite Dangerous and most certainly Eve Online (Except Eve Onlibe's character creation, that to date is the best I've seen). So is it worth now installing it on my PC and trying it? Or perhaps wait a little while longer?

[member="Kixi Rajki"] now i have never played Elite Dangerous nore have i played Eve. Is Star Citizen worth playing right now? I would say yes, the game for being still in alpha is smooth (If you meet the requirements for computer specs). 3.2 is about to come out very soon which opens the galaxy up to more prospects, i suggest waiting for that. Should be coming at the end of the month.

[member="Logen Brunner"] I had a look at the current status of this game even though admittingly I have been receiving the Roberts Space Industries newsletters for years and not read them. From what I can gather the game development has gone a long way with all its different modules and has changed game engines a few times too, Yet its currently still not completed due to the constant expanding of content and the storyline. The game still looks promising and awesome, but one underlying factor hasn't changed... its $22 USD a month to play or $242 USD a year. Really? For a game that's not even close to completion. I know it's largely crowd funded, but that's far to steep. Players that have actually paid this should get free subscription for life once it's complete. Seriously, imagine how much people who have been paying since 2012 will have ended up paying once the development of the game is completed. Yet I highly doubt that will happen. Anyway, whether a one off payment or monthly subscription, I'm usually easy when it comes to paying for something that I like or want, but even though I like this game, I refuse to pay that much for a game that is far from complete. Crowdfunded or not, that price is simply unjustified for an incomplete game.

[member="Kuat Drive Yards"] thats actually a very good idea. Have you suggested such in their forums?
Sorry about that, notification must have gotten lost. I've been with the game since just after the Kickstarter. I've made many suggestions since then but since 2017 I haven't been around on the forums, I'm just in waiting mode.

Why are you comparing Elite Dangerous and EVE to Star Citizen? That's like comparing GTA5 and Truck Simulator. Elite Dangerous has no capital ships, character creation or progression, and only has tasks available to small ship pilots. EVE is slightly similar, although the same applies about character progression and creation; there's no individual player. Star Citizen is primed for not only space and ship genres, but planned for you to discover planets, colonize planets, create stations and cities, and jobs ranging from planet surface cargo transport (pizza or raw materials) to ship admiral, commanding multiple, stolen great-sized capital ships with hundreds of players in each.

Subscription? Last I checked, and still stated in my membership; the game is buy to play. You buy a ship and you have access to the game. Ship Packs give you additional character slots. Once you own a game package, you never pay again, unless you want to. I've dished out a hefty load of cash, too.

Star Citizen FAQ
What is needed to play the game

The game is still in early alpha and has at least another 2-3 years to go. They have made great strives in the game, and are doing a fantastic job of setting up the leg work now so that the final stages will be a dead fucking Sprint to the finish line.

They can procedurally generate a city and a planet covering city. They can procedurally generate a unique space station, exterior and interior. They are working on procedurally generated towns and outposts. It's good solid tech, but not fully polished yet. Once they are ready to start popping in additional star systems, it will let them really pump them out fast.

Their planetary tech is amazing. Full rotating spheres with dynamic day/night lighting based on atmospheric interaction with the system's star. They have two fully explorable moons (nothing really on them though) and are working on getting a pair of planets (with trees and maybe some critters) out the door.

They have the basics of space combat with AI opponents down, but are still working to get their FPS NPC opponents functional and interesting.

As far as core mechanics... We're finally seeing solid progress, but that aspect alone is keeping us 2+ years away from a finished product. We are just now getting functional mining with 3.2 and the first interaction of active sensor operations. We need component salvaging, player-to-player refueling/rearming, large scale mining, full slag salvaging, full medical procedures, player-to-ship core repair and full ship-to-ship repair, full cargo mechanics, polished turret operation, polish to the flight model, star system to star system exploration mechanics (some sort of maze or obstacle course to get from system to system. If you have a saved flight path, you can skip it... But the wormhole breaks down over time and you'll need new pathways.).

And those are the major ones. Lots of little systems we don't even know about. But, things are progressing at a steady rate. Every quarter there is a major update and each major update includes some heavy work being done to at least two of the systems on that list. Alon. With constant and impressive work being done that when they're ready to start peppering their world with space stations, towns, cities, and planets... They will be able to pump out beautiful masterpieces en-mass.

[member="Kuat Drive Yards"] What's this all about then?

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Imperator-Prime/Monthly-Plan

If you can just buy a ship and then play forever, where do I go to do that?

I only mentioned Eve and ED cos I play them and they have some similarities. By no means was I implying they were better. I'm quite confident that Star Citizen will be better once it's finished. Oh and ED does have a character creation but it's crap. This is where EVE is unbeatable for now.

[member="Kixi Rajki"]

I wasn't arguing they were better or worse, I was stating the fact you were comparing steak and apples.

Go here
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/subscriptions

The subscription offers tons of "goodies" but has no full access to the game. It's mainly for the magazine thing they have, it gets you access to the Alpha/Beta but not the full game, ingame rewards (if you don't own the full game, you still have them in your account so when you do buy the game you'll have them), early access to test mew ships, and some other junk. But you don't get the game.

To get full access to the game, you can buy (cheapest) the Squadron 42 Standalone Pledge via the "GAME PACKAGES" section of the STORE if you only want the singleplayer option, or the Mustang Alpha Starter Pack for the multiplayer.

If you want both games at a better price, get the PACKAGE - MUSTANG ALPHA STAR CITIZEN + SQUADRON 42 COMBO at $65

That is two, fully developed games (upon release. An entire singleplayer campaign that you can use for your character after completion all the way into multiplayer, starting with multiple benefits. Or start poor, do jobs on other peoples ships, be crew, get money, do other things) for only 5 bucks extra for typical "AAA" games

[member="Kuat Drive Yards"]

Many thanks for that. I like the idea of doing it this way. The combo price is good. Its a one off and you get both single and multiplayer. Worth a think about doing as this game I like the concept. The magazine thing I should have cos I get NLs etc from Roberts Space Industries etc about the game.

I played a bit of No Man's Sky. Had it since it came out, even got all the latest updates etc. I like how you can explore planets literally land on them, fly through atmospheres etc, but the game is, well I found it boring. Even on the mode where you don't have to repair your ship and you can just start flying around. (Came on later updates). Star Citizen looks like it has or will have everything that Eve, ED, No Man's Sky and even FTS stuff have all in the one game. To me that's mad. (That's slang for awesome in case you're not familiar with Aussie slang). Anyway I might just wait for Update 3.2 and then try it out. Say how big is this game so far in terms of GB? Not that it matters as I have a fast connection with unlimited data, but I'm still curious all the while.

US Americans may not say mad anymore but majority typically understand mad as off the scale which the undertone means good or bad, of course with your context it was easy to see it was awesome.

It's about ~40gb

Cool, that's good to know. Re US Americans and the use of mad. :)

40 GB isn't all that big. Although I reckon this game will be around 100 GB once it's completed.

The subscription is not mandatory. It's mainly used to fund the constant PR videos that they put out 2-3 times a week to give their supporters regular updates on the progress they're making.

Only thing it's really good for is getting a 10% discount code for any (one) purchase. But you have to subscribe for a year first.

I'd suggest just dropping $50-75 on a starter package. It gets you a cheap little ship to fly around in and access to the game in its current state, and full access once the game goes live. If you want a larger ship, I'd really recommend just finding a friend who's already blown a bunch of money on the game and play with their toys. While you can load up your ship with an advanced computer and slave several of your ship's turrets to the computer (referred to as AI operated), or can hire NPC crew to man the turrets (and other systems), there will also be a pretty high demand for players willing to serve as crew aboard someone else's ship.

And they pay you (currency) for your efforts.

While they risk their assets...

So... yeah. Get a part time job swabbing someone else's deck and buy those bigger toys in-game.
