Feng Huang
Character
Feng beamed at Master
Balun Dashiell
"Thanks!"
Almost dropping her guard at the praise. Master Wu was generous with his positive reinforcement, perhaps too generous, it made Feng begin to doubt whether or not she truly had any skill or whether she was just the product of blind affection. It was gratifying to hear from another master that she had some skill. It boosted her confidence even as she prepared for his next attack.
Feng wondered where it would come from whether it would be a high overhand cut, or perhaps a thrust. Thrusts were hard to defend against she knew, which is why they were so valuable in combat. It required a pivot of your footwork and body movement to correctly counter.
Focus! Don't speculate, wait for his next move then respond accordingly.
Feng watched the approach hip to shoulder strike in coming. It felt too easy, yes Feng would have to put all her force behind the defensive block, a well-timed counter swing would be required to successfully parry the blade, but Feng knew it was coming. She could do it! Perhaps even have time for a counter riposte that would in real combat severe an opponent's arm.
Time seemed to slow, as the ebs and flow of combat was channelled around her. Feng felt that flow and slowed it down. She wasn't sure it was a Force ability so much as a mental ability, she'd heard stories of soldiers in combat thinking they could reach out and catch a blaster bolt. It was a lot like that, only Feng mastered the absurd impulse to catch the lightsaber blade.
Feng watched the incoming strike and countered with precision counter swing, putting her body behind the defensive blow. It connected, but before Feng could even think of a riposte. Balun launched another attack this time head to toe. Feng barely got her lightsaber intercepted in time, and the blades came perilously close to her face as she was driven to one knee.
That second stroke had come out of nowhere! Lightning fast follow up, Feng hadn't even had time to launch her intended riposte. Now she was out leveraged, on one knee, totally exposed from any stance or footwork that would save her.
Desperate, Feng lashed out with her right foot, aiming to connect with Balun's left knee. While she did so Feng launched her riposte. A thrust just like she had thought might be subjected to. If it landed that would be the fight. If it didn't Feng would be vulnerable to a counterattack, her body exposed behind the thrust.
Despite the risks Feng recognised it was the only way she could win the fight in her weakened position. Feng knew she wasn't going to soon forget the lesson to be prepared for a lightning fast simultaneous strikes. Feng launched the thrust pinning all her hopes for victory behind it, despite what Balun had said, for Feng it was win or lose.
