GENERAL INFORMATION
Unit Name: Sovereign Dawn Irregular Troops
Affiliation: Sovereign Dawn
Classification: Infantry
Description: The irregular troops of the Sovereign Dawn are not full-time professional soldiers; most of the time, they have lives they pull away from when the call goes out for aid. A large number of beings answer the call but often have very little combat experience, and those that do are usually in the form of guerrilla or criminal actions rather than in real battles. The only quality control they have is ensuring that the beings that come along know how to use whatever weapons they have and the discipline not to shoot their fellows in the back by mistake. Troops fall into the Sovereign Dawn mindset that there are no bad tactics, only bad targets.
The troops do not have standardized loadouts, using personal weapons, weapons looted off dead enemies or occasionally a cell will have a shipment of weapons and equipment bought on the open market or a looted armoury. The only piece of equipment every Irregular has is an armband in the Sovereign Dawn colours with its insignia printed on it.
COMBAT INFORMATION
Unit Size: Large
Unit Availability: Common
Unit Experience: Recruit
Equipment: The Sovereign Dawn does not have a standard loadout for its troops, as they use whatever they can get their hands on. Listed below are the more common weapons, armour, and equipment they use. Equipment called out by name is more common in their category, but not the only thing they use.
- Weapons
- Long Arms (Most members have one of these as a primary weapon)
- Sidearms (Every member has one of the following selections)
- Blaster Pistols
- Melee Weapons (Every member has at least one of the following selections)
- Special Weapons (Only one in five has one of these weapons)
- Grenades and Explosives
- Long Arms (Most members have one of these as a primary weapon)
- Armour (Most Members have some armour, whether a standardized set or scavenged pieces)
Force Abilities: None
Strengths:
- Improvisation: They are accustomed to making do with whatever weapons, vehicles, explosives, and equipment are available. As well, being made up of civilians with civilian jobs, many of them have skills not possessed by professional troops who exclusively train in combat: computer programmers, mechanics, heavy equipment operators, and construction workers all have skills that would allow them to take unique advantages that might be missed by regular troops.
- Good at Raiding: Ambushes, sabotage, convoy attacks, hit-and-run strikes, and attacks on lightly defended facilities suit them well.
- High Morale: They genuinely believe in the cause and will keep fighting under conditions that would break more professional troops.
- Unpredictability: Their lack of standardized doctrine makes them difficult for conventional commanders to anticipate.
- Poor Training: Many fighters lack basic skills such as fire discipline, formation movement, battlefield communication, and coordinated assaults.
- Limited Heavy Weapons: They may have plenty of rifles but comparatively few fliers, artillery pieces, or armoured vehicles.
- Vulnerable in Open Battle: Against disciplined troops with armour, air support, and artillery, enthusiasm alone will not compensate for tactical deficiencies.
- Communication Problems: Different equipment, languages, species, local groups, and command customs can make coordination chaotic.
The Irregular troops of the Sovereign Dawn draw from the early roots of gangs and anti-slavery resistance cells rather than any sort of military tradition, in the same way that their fleets draw traditions from smugglers and pirates.
