..:: Strengths ::..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Frangible Rounds - The M53 carries on its predecessors capability to fire frangible rounds - slugs that break apart upon impact and produce a cloud of thermite - these rounds also give the weapon a higher stopping power; though are not the full reason for the weapons high stopping power.

  • Thermite Cloud - The true stopping power of the M53 is not its frangible rounds; rather it is the effect that comes after. When a frangible round bursts against a target, it produces a cloud of thermite - these clouds are then quickly activated by the careful placement of a Magnesium flare fired by the M53. It is there effective clouds of fire that offer the weapon its true stopping power.

  • Flash! - When utilized against an individual that is wielding a lightsaber to block the rounds - the frangible rounds are activated upon striking the blade of the lightsaber - thus offering a small flash in the eyes of the enemy which can potentially disorient or even startle those lesser trained Force Users.

  • Detachable Pan Magazine - A trick that some individuals often utilizing the M53 and its predecessor the M44 have learned is to utilize the pan magazine. In a means similar to if the pan were struck with a well placed shot, the individual detaches the magazine and secures it to an object. Usually it is fixed to a lock, a blast door, floor, etc etc and then fired upon to create the same effect - that being activating the ammunition and turning it into a makeshift cutting device to permit entry.

..:: Weaknesses ::..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Exposed Pan - The location of the pan magazine - being on top of the weapon - makes it an easily identifiable target for sharpshooters. A well place shot to this pan magazine can cause the ammunition to go off prematurely and create a cutting tool effect; in which the pan magazine becomes super heated and cuts through the weapon, effectively rendering it worthless.

  • Maintenance Issues - With as unique a weapon there are bound to be issues that arise. Such an issue is the fact that these weapons require constant maintenance and care to remain in proper working order. The lack of proper maintenance - such as allowing the weapons to sit in a stock room for prolonged periods without care or test firing - can cause problems to arise. Such problems are - though not limited - to weapon jams, over heating and in rare instances exploding in the users hands.

  • Short Range - Unlike other weapons of its kind, the M53 lacks a long range that would make it a staple on most battlefields. Rather its short range - 500 meters - and its uniqueness often relegated it to specialized operations or structural defenses.

  • A Stiff Breeze - Due to the utilization of frangible rounds that create a cloud of thermite to be ignited by the magnesium flares; these thermite clouds can be quickly dissipated if a gust of wind or other stiff breeze is introduced.

..:: Description ::..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the foundation of the Templar Order - the predecessors of the Order of the Righteous Flame and Knights of the Pyre - a weapon was crafted by their organization to be utilized in combat against Force Users. These specialized Thermite Rifles saw little use - though their capabilities and potential were worth their revival - which is what we have today.

In the year 853 ABY, Sorenn-Syrush Industries has reintroduced the Thermite Rifle under a new title - the M53/Mg Thermite Rifle - the successor of the older M44/Mg Thermite Rifle used by the Templar Order.

While not much has changed between the two designs - as the M53 is plagued by many of the design flaws and pit falls of the older M44 - its capabilities still remain as prudent as ever. Utilizing Frangible rounds that produce a homogenous cloud to be ignited by a flare - usually magnesium based - it produces a brilliant cloud of fire. An update on the M44, the M53 boasts a higher ammunition capacity and stopping power than its older counterpart though it still is affected by a low reloading speed.

Additional problems that remain are the fact that the pan magazine holding the frangible rounds is still mounted - and feeding into the weapon - from the top of the rifle, making it an easy target for sharpshooters. Likewise the M53 requires the same amount - if not more - of careful maintenance and care than the M44 to ensure it remains in working condition. However even with these problems, its capabilities to secure tight choke points or its ability to be utilized against lightsaber wielding opponents remain some of its greatest strengths.
