ADVANCED SYSTEMS

  • Advanced Weapon Systems;

    Corona - Hits three times as hard as normal turbolasers at the same standard effective range powered by a sianium power generator. A massive flaw within the weapon however is the heat output. The corona’s problem of overheating, and combustion has given way to additional training of the gun crews in ways to prevent this.

  • Sagitta - A new generation of mass driver cannons that allows for the weapon to shoot at 12 k/s a vast improvement over the previous. Kinetic damage from the Sagitta is certainly more than felt upon impact. Additionally the Sagitta has a new reload system making it easier for gun crews to reload. Even with inertia dampeners in place the recoil of the Sagitta is still quite high. If rounds are fired rapidly in quick succession this can lead to rail degradation rendering the weapon inoperable until the ship can be repaired.

[*]
Advanced Defensive Systems;

  • Shield Boosterhttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shield_booster - An auxiliary device that provides a minor boost to standard deflector shields. Certainly an option in times of dire need and not something to be abused within normal engagements. Rather, as a last stand measure in the hopes of bringing shields back or a path in which to hyperjump away from the engagement.

  • Damage Reduction Armorhttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/AR-0B_damage_reduction_armor_component - A component that generated an ablative energy current through a starship’s hull to reduce damage taken. This has been implemented into the Sondheimer III’s design to aid in the amount of damage the ship can receive before it must disengage.

  • HIMS - With the hyperwave inertial momentum sustainer installed this gives the Sondheimer not only the ability to prevent being pulled out from hyperspace. Counteracting an interdiction field, at the sametime however if in realspace and already affected by an interdiction field it would be unable to engage its hyperdrive.

Strengths:

  • Defended: The Sondheimer III is built to withstand brutal attacks and assaults with a number of shields, and shield assistance technology such as the shield booster. While a last minute option to buy time it still serves to give the interdictor another chance to fight.

  • Armed: A well armed cruiser that can return fire for as much as she receives equipped with plasma cannons, mass drivers and turbolasers along with a modular warhead launcher the Sondheimer III is ready to face her opponents.
Weaknesses:

  • Slow to Turn: One of the Sondheimer’s downfalls is her low turning radius creating firing gaps as she moves, and as her gun crews turn the weapons to keep up with her. All of this takes time, precious seconds that are lost to the enemy. Giving them valuable moments in which to counter the Sondheimer.

  • Vulnerabilities: Another weak point for the vessel is the under belly where her weapons are few leaving gaps in the defenses allowing for the faster and more agile ships to sweep in and fire away. Here you’ll find the hangar another weak point as enemy boarding shuttles may have a chance at striking here.
Description:

As part of the ongoing modernization programme, the Sondheimer III was part of this. Taking shape at one of the company’s shipyards. The new Sondheimer would feature the new weapon systems from Aurora Industries. In addition it would boast a small shield boost to use in emergencies as well as HIMS, a first in the Mark III Project. It would also feature an array of defenses with ion weapons in mind, given the role the Sondheimer performs as an interdiction cruiser it was crucial.

Ion Shield, Anti-Ion Mesh were the caps of the suite in addition to typical cap drains, socket guards and a de-ionizer. The idea was to give the Sondheimer a fighting chance to hold her ground in the midst of battle. The Sondheimer III is also equipped with four gravity wells allowing her to ensure that no one gets an easy way out of the system without first going through her. Mass driver cannons and turbolasers from Aurora Industries and plasma cannons now work as the Sondheimer’s primary offensive weapons. Modular mine launcher at the rear with fixed port/starboard modular torpedo launchers enable a versatility in the Sondheimer’s attacks.

For the fire power and the defense that the Sondheimer is capable of there are flaws in the design. The first of which is her low maneuverability and low turn of the guns. As she turns her guns must move and recalibrate for their positions and enemy positions as well. Faster ships will have an easier time avoiding the Sondheimer’s guns giving them an opportunity to make their run on the cruiser.

Another of the Sondheimer’s flaws falls to her ammunition. Carrying a multitude of torpedoes and ready for war, sympathetic detonation. While the Sondheimer like many of the Victorian Imperial line has a system in place to try and prevent these types of detonations from happening. The reality is there is no foolproof method for doing so. Combat brings a lot of variables that cannot be accounted for in the laboratories. Leaving her munitions storage to be one of those variables, severe kinetic damage and jostling may set off these warheads causing a catastrophic scenario for the interdictor. Additionally her advanced weapon systems are run on siaber crystal technology which if broken can devastate the vessel just as well.
