Personal History
Prologue: The Story So Far…
It’s been a little over a week now. When I awoke I didn’t feel what most would call ‘carbonite sickness.’ My mostly inorganic body ensured as much. I had to find information, it was the only thing on my mind. Where was I? When was I? And it almost lead to a few chaotic close calls, but ultimately it landed me here in this small white holding cell, with this armored police officer sitting across from me now.
“Who are you?”
“Sol.”
“Sol…?”
“Syrrid Apolla.”
“Tell me about you, Sol, if you’d please.”
“I don’t remember much from before. I know there was a war of some kind. Same crap that always hounded this galaxy: the Jedi and whatever ‘Republic’ existed at the time, the Sith and whatever ‘Empire’ they had, just the same conflict but in another time. A time long before now. This conflict was just another one of the same though, couldn’t place a time. What I can tell you is I was good at what I did.”
“And what was that?”
“I was a killer. I was a good one too. A killer who preyed on anyone she felt was… unworthy.”
“Unworthy of what?”
“It doesn’t matter. The point is I was very good at it, so good that both sides of that pitiful conflict eventually wanted me dead. Maybe I killed someone important? Maybe they were just scared I would. Either way, I avoided them for a long time.”
“Until you didn’t.”
A heavy sigh is expelled from the artificial lungs housed within this artificial body, as I nod in both agreement and resentment.
“Still not sure who or why, probably credits or some promised wish, sold me out. I remember everything that happened next though.
They wanted a weapon. They wanted my mind. Piece by piece they took my organic form apart and built me a new body that was free from the physical flaws and limitations mortal flesh brought with it.
I was, am, still mortal though. Most my organs remain, covered in metal and wires notwithstanding. But my flesh? My appearance? I looked the same, granted with some new visual enhancements. But it wasn’t me or my body, not anymore.
A droid with a soul? A machine with a heart? What am I? I don’t have the answer to that.”
“And they sent you on missions?”
“I was an agent. An assassin. Some rogue shadow organization, genuinely don’t remember if they were Jedi or Sith, Republic or Empire. I was to infiltrate and extract information from the enemy, whoever that was.”
“This is what lead to you being put on ice?”
“They had replaced most my brain with computer, saving only the organic material that was required to keep me alive. My memory is far greater than most sentient beings, more akin to a droid with nearly limitless databanks. And I love it.
But not just any knowledge. That of those I killed. I’d become a more effective weapon with each one, with more knowledge. I wasn’t human anymore, not in a mental sense. I’ve evolved beyond that…”
“How did the incident occur?”
“I was sent to a cloning facility of some sort that was hidden away on some lesser known world.
I was going to assassinate a high value target. The details don’t matter because it was, in actuality, a trap to assassinate me.
They underestimated me… or so I thought. If I had just taken a second glance, damn things might be different.
But I didn’t. And I found myself inside a carbonite generator. Suffice to say, that’s where my story ended.”
“Until a week ago. Tell me, how were you able to kill six high risk bounty targets and two Jedi knights?”
A smile forms on my lips for the first time since I awoke, I almost can’t help it.
“When I fell asleep I was in a galaxy that was all to familiar with me, and it with myself. But now I’ve awoken in a brand new galaxy, with brand new players at the table. And nobody knows me.”
My smile is twisted, I almost giggle with excitement at the mere thought of all I plan to do in this new galaxy.
“This galaxy has no idea what I’m capable of, and I can’t wait to share my vision with you all.”
It only took a few minutes to escape; he was too distracted with his questioning to notice my nimble hands slip free of the restraints. Doesn’t matter much now, he’s gone and I’m free. Again.
This galaxy… time to get to work.
