Valery stepped through the door of the Noble home with the quiet grace of someone who knew exactly where she was going — and who she'd find when she got there. Her long coat had been ditched somewhere between the tailor and the door, and now the black suit beneath hugged every movement. Sleeveless. Sleek. New. A symbol of change she hadn't planned to reveal quite so soon.
But she paused in the threshold of the room anyway.
Something shifted.
Through the bond she shared with Kahlil — subtle but unmistakable — came a flicker. Not worry. Not alarm. But mischief. That familiar, slow-burning sort of feeling she got whenever he was planning to tease her. Her brows drew together ever so slightly, as she opened the door.
"…Kahlil?" she called, drawing out his name with suspicious sweetness as she stepped further into the room, hip cocked just slightly. "Where are you?" she asked innocently, but deep down, she perhaps already knew the answer.
Which made the whole thing just a little more dangerous.
Especially if he answered honestly.
