The battle plate of the snake was first awarded to the most veteran supercommandos of Clan Gra'tua upon production of the first sets of the new advanced Battle Plate. The first four sets went to Alor Stone Gra'tua and his squad, one officer and two noncoms, all hard edged veterans in their prime. In time they came to accept the best of the best of the Clan into their ranks as the elite among elite.
Position in the snakes is and has always been by selection of a council of one's peers. Achievement alone is not enough, nor bravery, or valour, for the Clan Gra'tua has plenty of all. Those awarded the gold battle plate are selected for their particular skills demonstrated over time in service to the Clan. When awarded their golden battle plate, each warrior adopts a snake-themed callsign, which they take with them wherever they go.
The Clan's finest warriors deploy in squads of four, and it is rare to see a full squad in battle plate. The squads so recognized are the finest the Clan has to represent it, commanded by the best officers, and backed up by the best and most proven fighters.
