Silence of the Lambs

The bear looked up at her once she approached. The pain in its eyes was evident, and judging by how the chain around its neck dug into its skin it was fair to assume it was both physical and psychological. Amea reached out a hand to gently pat against its fur. It pulled away and began to show its anger, she felt it in the force. She felt the way the creature seemed dazed and confused as if it had been drugged out of its mind to accomplish what the men engaged with Alden had done.

On instinct she projected a sense of calm to the bear. This was her gift from the force, the thing she had a penchant for and the reason animals just seemed to flock to her. This bear in its weakened state seemed receptive to her approach and she let her hand brush with a gentle stroke through its fur. Through their tiny bond she felt the joy it experienced at the attention, and once her hand wrapped themselves around its chains to ease them up and get him out of captivity it escalated into a full-blown and ecstatic roar.

The kid slowly backed away from the bear as it stood on both its hind legs for its roar of rejuvenated pride. It still shook, it was still sickly thin but it was thankful. Alden’s touch and Vera’s presence had allowed it a moment of respite, and as thanks it would simply leave them be. With the final nuzzle it began its long trek back into the forests and to health.

Things would turn around for that beast, but the same could not be said for those that had enslaved it. Alden would be allowed to lead them back to camp through the downpour and Vera would do him company and offer assistance when they tore into their chains perhaps a little too much. It was hard to even look them in the eyes after all this, but as luck had it the Jedi were indeed not here to act judge, jury, or executioners.

They got to the main settlement just in time to have themselves soaked to the bone in rainwater, a sensation that Vera had gotten used to quite some time ago. It was hard to explain her decision to let the bear go, but it didn’t really matter when the culprits had been found and delivered for the justice that they had due.

In the end Alden had offered her a view into something new as well as an invitation. She had left a good mark on him it seemed, and the pride she had felt when she heard it made her beam even through the relentless rainfall. The invitation was to come find him if she decided to be part of something else, something new, and for a while she wasn’t sure if she had the courage to pull that off. Her friends were all on Kashyyyk and that was where she lived.

… But as time would prove the jump wasn’t quite as difficult as she had once believed. A new adventure blossomed from the curious seeds that Alden had planted on her mind that day, and where it lead, well… That was a story for another day.
