STRENGTHS
  • Electrolytic refining: Sigma class refineries use high voltages of electricity to melt metal ore into molten steel. This is done in a zero atmosphere environment. The high voltage strips away any impurities and the lack of any atmosphere significantly lowers the chance of impurities being introduced, this results in better quality steel.
WEAKNESSES
  • Power requirements: The power needed to operate this orbital refinery is extensive. The refineries themselves are covered in hundreds of solar panels, a little more than half the facilities structure. Stations themselves are positioned close to and facing the star of the system they operate in, this allows for continuous power collection.
DESCRIPTION
Supply and demand is the name of the game for an ever growing galactic economy. From starships and building materials to luxury vehicles, the galaxy is always in need of more. To satisfy those needs, manufacturers need good steel. The Sigma class orbital refinery is designed to help satisfy those needs. This three thousand meter station brings ore in through its five unloading shoots that lead into several central storage areas. Ore is then transferred into a zero atmosphere smelting room that melts the metal using electrolytic refining, which burns away impurities. Molten steel is then pumped through ray shielded phrik pipes to a massive loading ring out where specialized ships wait. Ray shielded phrik pipes are guided to the vessels loading hatches by droids where then molten steel is unloaded.

Sigma refineries have little in the way of crew memebers, requiring roughly two hundred in total. Housing and amenities reside on the edges of the station, away from the main refinery. Most of the ships interior is zero atmosphere and designated for equipment and droids only. Solar panels make up a little over half of the stations size, all focused on power the stations refining process. Stations themselves need to be set up close to a systems star in order to receive enough like for power.
