DESCRIPTION
The Sickle is the next ship out of the FLaT PACK Programme. It is designed to augment to Scythe, Turtle and Sev'rance class in providing well rounded battlegroups formed of relatively specialised ships. The Sickle has a similar aesthetic to the Contention and Scythe class vessels. The FLexible And Tactical PACKaged unit programme was designed to replace a number of individual flexible, general ships with a set of more focussed ships that work in pre-defined tactical units. The rationale is that tactical units can easily be rearranged to meet emerging needs and to cope with different situations. Refitting general purpose ships frequently to meet the rapidly changing nature of warfare wholesale was deemed too expensive. The business case for the programme identified that a whole raft of new designs could be achieved whilst still achieving value for money in the long term. The ships from this programme can still be refitted, as the lifespan of any hull is expected to be greater than any individual system.
Manoeuvrable and well armed, groups of Sickle class frigates can hold their own against Cruisers and will see off many similar sized and smaller ships. Like many recent CIS vessels, the Sickle uses long range ion weaponry to attempt to disrupt the operation of key larger vessels on approach. As is the norm for CIS ships, the Sickle-class uses more durable alloys in construction. However, to keep this vessel reasonably light and manoeuvrable, the Sickle only uses Turadium in the frame of the vessel, and Quadranium plating over key areas of the hull.
Unlike recent specialised ships, the Sickle is often seen on its own patrolling CIS space.
