Name: Shintel Waystation
Classification: Covert traffic monitoring station
Location: In a swamp on Shintel, which is a choke point near the boundary between the Kathol Sector proper and the Kathol Outback.
Affiliation: The Kathol Outback/The Underground
Description: Shintel Waystation is a house built of local materials -- planks and thatch, mostly. About a hundred klicks away from the nearest starport, the waystation has its own small landing pad (a real joy to build in a swamp). The waystation has room for eight people, but generally holds two or three.
Most of the single building is taken up by a hyperwave signal interceptor. Its purpose is to note hyperspace traffic through the Shintel system, a choke point in the Kathol Sector's web of hyperspace routes. Unless using specialty gear to produce a minimal hyperspace reversion signature, any ship -- stealthed or not -- will register as two momentary blips while passing through the Shintel system.
The interceptor's secondary function is hypercomm/subspace comm signals interception. However, the waystation lacks top-tier decryption gear, so while the HSI picks up just about anything, the signal often needs to go elsewhere for codebreaking or interpretation.
The waystation also includes a good comm suite with relay functionality.
History: During Alec Rekali's year-and-a-half-long Underground expedition to Demonsgate and back, she seeded the Kathol Outback with monitoring posts, boltholes, secret bases, comm relays, sensor nodes, and suchlike things. Shintel Waystation was one such location.
In later years, these assets would become crucial to the Underground's liberation of the Kathol Outback from the remnants of the Covenant of the Black rose. The Underground's strategy hinged on controlling choke points such as Pembric Two, Timbra Ott, Uukaablis, and Shintel. The former three saw significant activity. After the fact, though, the Underground decided to bolster its monitoring capability by enhancing the waystations on lower-profile choke point worlds; Shintel was one of these.
Intent: A secret waystation; a good place to go to ground if necessary. Another link in the chain of hyperspace monitors and comm relays that the Underground wound through the Kathol Outback.
