OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Paddle Beamer/Ion Weapon
  • Size: Very Small
  • Weight: Light
  • Ammunition Type: Power cell
  • Ammunition Capacity: Small; 50 shots
  • Effective Range: Point Blank; optimum range 8 meters, maximum range 12 meters.
  • Rate of Fire: Low; 1 RPS, Semi-Automatic
  • Damage Output: High; direct hits will paralyze a target, while strikes to limbs can disable them. If the beam hits your leg, that leg will go numb. If it hits your torso, you'll crumple like a ragdoll, unable to move. A beam to the neck can knock you unconscious, but can also be dangerous. A headshot is very dangerous, resulting in energy trauma, and may prove lethal.
  • Recoil: Average
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Nonlethal weapon that temporarily disables the target's nervous system using ion energy, causing paralysis and/or unconsciousness.
  • Originally invented by the Ssi-ruuk, this is a Shi'ido variant of the weapon developed on Lao-mon which can account for differences in size, strength, and physiology without having to be constantly adjusted and calibrated by the wielder.
STRENGTHS
  • Nonlethal Weapon: The beamer cannot be set to kill, only to stun. There are a plethora of failsafes built into it to prevent accidents or malfunctions from occurring, including safeguards to prevent overloading of the power cells, an extremely durable outer shell protecting against damage to the weapon which could cause it to explode or discharge unintentionally, multiple cooling compartments, etc.
  • Automatic Adjustment: This weapon features built-in scanners which will calculate the precise amount of energy needed to incapacitate a target based on size and species, without the shooter having to manually adjust the output.
  • Lightsabers and Shields: The beam can pass through conventional shields and armor, and cannot be deflected by a lightsaber. A lightsaber can be calibrated to "bend" the beam away, but not reflect it back at the shooter the way a blaster bolt could be.
  • Fits in the Palm of My Hand: Harder for scanners to detect, too, which makes it easier to smuggle through security.
WEAKNESSES
  • Be Careful With Your Aim, Now: Aiming for the head or firing too close in range has been known to cause serious injury or death to the recipient.
  • Up Close and Personal: This is not a long-range weapon at all; it is totally ineffective at distances greater than 12 meters at the most.
  • Imperfect: There is still a chance that the beamer could malfunction or fail to adjust properly to a target, with unintended results.
DESCRIPTION

"A third [Ssi-ruuvi cruiser] jumped into hyperspace too quickly to have made calculations, fleeing blindly." - Kathy Tyers, The Truce At Bakura

Following the invasion of Bakura, the Ssi-ruuk were forced to retreat. One of their cruisers made a hasty jump to hyperspace in its eagerness to escape the losing battle. The ship emerged somewhere near Lao-mon, homeworld of the Shi'ido and outside of Imperial territory.

What followed was like something out of an episode of the Twilight Zone. The Ssi-ruuk, unable to remain in their damaged ship, landed on the planet and explored, finding structures and technology which seemed to have been very recently abandoned. Meanwhile, the natives, who had been hiding from the invaders, attempted to introduce themselves peacefully. The Ssi-ruuk were less than receptive; while they found the Shi'ido ill-suited to the entechment process, that didn't stop them from trying. The surviving crew members were gradually picked off, one by one, and their technology was taken apart and studied.

The Shi'ido beamer was one of the results of their learning more about the Ssi-ruuk's primary form of weaponry, honed to a fine precision over the centuries. This small, sleek device doesn't even look like a gun, making it easier to sneak it past security. While very short-ranged, it has a high likelihood of downing a target after just one direct hit. Shooters are advised to hone their aim and reserve this weapon for close quarters.

Fascinating submission Tom Kovack

Just a couple of things for you:

Lightsabers and Shields: The beam can pass through conventional shields and armor, and cannot be deflected by a lightsaber. A lightsaber can be calibrated to "bend" the beam away, but not reflect it back at the shooter the way a blaster bolt could be.
Be Careful With Your Aim, Now: Aiming for the head or firing at point-blank range has been known to cause serious injury or death to the recipient.

Can you explain why it can do these things?

The Wookieepedia sub this is based on mentions both of these things in its first paragraph without providing much in the way of explanation:

"...blasts aiming at the head and at close range can kill the target. The long beam fired by the weapon could not be deflected by a lightsaber, as the beam would simply bend around the beam to strike the user. Although, with preparation, a lightsaber could be calibrated to bend the bolts away, though not reflect them."

If I had to guess at the reason why, direct headshots would likely run the risk of causing brain damage. The same way with firing too close - the energy output is greater and you run the risk of doing harm. But there is no canon explanation, maybe aside from the fact that it uses ion energy, which can disable electronics such as shields and generally cannot be deflected by a lightsaber.
