She's Growing On Me [Leyan]

Jak Sandrow

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
"Well... I want to see what you can do with your plant powers. Show me the best of what you can do."

He sat back and watched, curious as to her limits.

Leyan thought for a moment. She looked around. Since it was Jak's ship, there were little plants scattered pretty much _everywhere_ . She went over to what appeared to be a baby bush. It was in a little pot that she took into her hands. Leyan gently placed her fingers on top of the soil and closed her eyes. Slowly, the bush began to grow. It became three times bigger than before, even growing blueberries. Some of its roots came up from the soil and coiled themselves around the girl's fingers. Leyan opened her eyes, smiling down at the bush.
"I can grow things. I can mend them, too. I can hear them speak to me, and they like to listen, too..."

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
Jak nodded appreciatively. "Not bad, not bad in the slightest."

On the inside, he was unabashedly amazed. Someone else besides him could understand his abilities!

"Can you show me your healing power?" Taking a small twig - one that had already been broken off - he handed it to Leyan. "Can you reattach this?"

Leyan gently took the twig in her hand, sliding her fingers out of the loving roots. She took a moment to sense where the twig wanted to go. Her hand then began to glow a faint gold color. The twig seemed to move on it's own, reconnecting to it's place like a magnet would to metal. Leaves sprouted from the newly mended branch shortly after.

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
Jak's eyes practically glowed. "... Leyan... That's amazing..."

He could feel her power radiating from her through the Force, surging out to the plant and healing its wounds.

"How long have you had this power for?"

"I've been able to heal since I was a small child. There were always sickly kittens in the alleyway behind my town home. All I had to do was listen, and I knew how to make them better."
Leyan explained softly.

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
"So, it's not just plants you can heal??" Jak was astonished. "I can't even do that!" Well, he could set a bone, or fix a sprained ankle, but actually heal tissue? That was beyond him completely.

"What else?"

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
"Hey, that's alright," he attempted to reassure. "What you're doing is great, honest. Just keep working at it, and you'll be able to get really good at it."

Standing up, he stretched. "I'm getting something to eat. What would you like?"

Leyan thought for a moment.
"Water, please."
She looked down at the bush in her hand.
"... Is it alright if I have a few of your berries? I promise I won't take them all. And I can help you grow new ones later, if you want..."
She spoke directly to the plant. After a moment a silence, she smiled a little.
"Thank you..."
Leyan then took a small handful of blueberries and gently sat the bush down.

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
He nodded. "Water it is." Going to the main water tank in his ship, he poured two glasses, one for each of them, and brought one back for her.

"So, in the meantime," he concluded his lesson, "just make sure that you keep training with what you know, alright?"

Leyan nodded.
"I'll work as hard as I can."
She smiled.
Over the next few weeks, Leyan did just that. She focused on getting used to the Force inside of her. She'd use it for just about everything she did save for eating and sleeping. In due time, it was clear that she was getting stronger every day.
But then, something strange occurred. While Jak was gone one day, Leyan disappeared. She just... vanished. There was no trace as to how it happened. She didn't even take her meager belongings. It didn't seem right....

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
Knocking on the door to the ship, Jak frowned when he heard no reply. "Leyan, I'm coming in," he warned, giving her a moment before opening the door.

She wasn't in the hallway.

She wasn't anywhere in the ship, in fact.

She must have gone out on her own, Jak surmised. Good for her!

But when she hadn't gotten back that evening, Jak was worried. It wasn't like her - well, as much as he knew her, anyway - to go off without telling him.

It wasn't till the morning of the second day, with no sign of Leyan, that Jak feared the worst.

She doesn't like me, he berated himself. You were too loud, too harsh on her.

Sighing, Jak carefully put away her belongings - why, he didn't know, but he couldn't bear to part with them. It was too bad, honestly. The first person he met that actually worked like him, and she just left.

He left the ship, quietly intent on finding a bar.
