  From the surface, there is very little to indicate the existence of a major installation. What can be detected resembles a mundane automated meteorological and geological observation station constructed to monitor Formac's extreme climate. Antennas, sensor equipment, environmental monitoring instruments, small maintenance structures, and communications equipment reinforce this appearance.
  The visible installation is merely a façade.
  Beneath it lies the true Shadow Laboratory, buried beneath the ice and rock of Formac. Personnel arriving at the installation must possess the appropriate identification and clearance before being permitted to approach the landing area.
  A large section of apparently ordinary frozen terrain conceals a retractable landing platform. Once authorized, enormous armored doors beneath the ice separate and the platform rises to the surface. The platform is deliberately oversized, allowing it to receive anything from small transports and starfighters to considerably larger vessels.
  Once a vessel has landed, the platform descends into the mountain and the armored surface closes above it, restoring the appearance of uninterrupted frozen terrain. The vessel is subsequently transferred into the underground hangar complex, where it can remain completely concealed from observation on the surface.
  Smaller entrances exist for personnel, maintenance teams, emergency evacuation, and ground vehicles, but these are similarly concealed and monitored.
• Description: Hidden beneath Formac's frozen surface, the Shadow Laboratory is an enormous subterranean scientific installation and hardened bunker constructed as the successor to Lyssara Thrynn's original laboratory on Taspir III.
  Rather than concentrating numerous research disciplines inside a comparatively limited facility, the Formac installation was designed from its inception around compartmentalization, redundancy, secrecy, and expansion. Eight principal subterranean levels descend beneath the surface installation, with additional maintenance shafts, service tunnels, power conduits, storage chambers, transportation corridors, and utility spaces connecting them.
  Thick layers of natural ice and rock provide an additional barrier around the artificial fortifications of the complex. Entire sections can be isolated from one another during emergencies, while independent power, ventilation, communications, and containment systems allow portions of the laboratory to remain operational even when others have been compromised.
  Shadow Laboratory is consequently more than a collection of laboratories. It is a self-sufficient underground research complex capable of housing its personnel, protecting its projects, receiving large spacecraft, manufacturing prototypes, containing dangerous experiments, and continuing to function while effectively cut off from the outside galaxy.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Surface Installation Meteorological Observation Station

The only obvious structure on the surface is intentionally unimpressive. Officially, the installation appears to be little more than an automated meteorological, atmospheric, and geological observation station designed to collect information about Formac.

Sensor towers, communication antennae, weather-monitoring equipment and several small technical structures provide sufficient justification for the energy signatures and communications generated by the installation below.

Most systems visible on the surface are genuine. The station actually collects meteorological and geological information, both to maintain the disguise and because such information is useful for protecting the underground complex from movements in the surrounding ice.

The most important surface structure, however, is almost impossible to distinguish from the surrounding terrain when inactive. A massive retractable landing platform is concealed beneath armored sections covered by ice and artificial snow. Authorized vessels land upon the platform before being lowered directly into the underground installation.

Subterranean Hangar Complex

Located beneath the surface installation, the hangar complex represents the primary logistical entrance into Shadow Laboratory.

The enormous descending platform allows spacecraft to enter the installation without requiring a permanently exposed hangar entrance. Once underground, vessels are moved away from the elevator platform and assigned to individual docking positions.

The hangar contains refueling equipment, repair facilities, workshops, cargo handling systems, storage areas and dedicated maintenance spaces. Smaller auxiliary hangars accommodate shuttles, starfighters and utility craft.

The main hangar has deliberately been constructed on a much larger scale than strictly necessary. Lyssara anticipated that the facility might eventually need to accommodate unusually large transports or experimental spacecraft and refused to allow the dimensions of the original construction to permanently restrict future projects.

Heavy blast doors allow individual hangar sections to be sealed, while freight elevators and cargo rail systems connect the complex with the industrial and scientific levels below.

Level -1 Primary Research Complex

The first principal level is the scientific heart of Shadow Laboratory and the direct successor to the primary laboratories of the original Taspir III installation.

The level contains laboratories dedicated to chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, virology, genetics, medicine, biotechnology and other conventional or experimental scientific disciplines. Clean rooms, surgical laboratories, cryogenic sample banks, analytical laboratories, controlled-environment chambers and prototype workshops occupy entire wings.

Unlike the original Shadow Laboratory, researchers are no longer forced to place unrelated projects beside one another simply because of limited space. Individual research programs can receive entire laboratories or isolated sectors.

The level has been extensively compartmentalized. Every major laboratory wing possesses independent atmospheric controls and emergency bulkheads, allowing biological or chemical contamination to be isolated without requiring the evacuation of the entire floor.

Level -2 Advanced Physics and Antimatter Research

The second level expands upon one of the most dangerous functions of the original Shadow Laboratory: experimental research into antimatter and advanced physics.

Antimatter containment chambers, particle research facilities, experimental reactors, energy laboratories, material testing chambers, shield research facilities and specialized engineering laboratories are distributed throughout heavily reinforced sections.

Experiments considered particularly dangerous are conducted inside isolated chambers constructed within artificial caverns excavated around the main level. These laboratories can be remotely operated from protected observation stations.

Multiple layers of shielding, emergency containment fields and physical barriers separate experimental chambers from occupied areas. Where possible, potentially catastrophic experiments are deliberately positioned away from the central structure so that the loss of an individual laboratory does not automatically compromise the entire facility.

Level -3 Residential and Administrative Complex

The third level houses the permanent population of Shadow Laboratory and functions as a small subterranean settlement.

Residential quarters range from compact accommodations for temporary personnel to larger apartments for senior researchers and officers. The level also contains cafeterias, recreational areas, medical facilities, training rooms, administrative offices, meeting rooms, communal spaces and the various services necessary for personnel expected to remain on Formac for extended periods.

A separate and heavily secured section contains the private residences of the facility's senior leadership.

Lyssara Thrynn possesses her own private apartment within this section. Unknown to almost everyone residing within the laboratory, one wall of the apartment conceals a private elevator. The elevator does not appear on the facility's standard architectural plans and requires Lyssara's authorization to operate.

Its only destination is Level -8.

Level -4 Advanced Bioengineering and Sithspawn Research

Level -4 contains biological experiments considered too sensitive, dangerous or unconventional for the primary laboratories.

The level includes genetic engineering laboratories, surgical theatres, artificial growth chambers, specimen storage, biological containment facilities and observation chambers capable of housing significantly larger organisms.

Specialized laboratories allow conventional genetic engineering and biotechnology to be combined with research involving Sith alchemy and the Force. This makes the level particularly suitable for experiments involving artificially created organisms and Sithspawn.

Large environmental chambers can reproduce different atmospheric, climatic and ecological conditions, allowing specimens to be observed under controlled circumstances without being released onto Formac.

Dangerous organisms are maintained within independent containment sectors protected by multiple physical barriers and monitored remotely whenever possible.

Level -5 Military Engineering and Testing Complex

The fifth level is considerably more industrial than the research floors above it.

Here, discoveries made elsewhere in Shadow Laboratory can be transformed into functional prototypes. Workshops and manufacturing areas support the development of experimental weapons, armor, droids, vehicles, power systems, military equipment and other classified technologies.

Large assembly halls permit prototypes to be constructed entirely underground.

The level also contains extensive testing facilities excavated directly into the surrounding rock. Firing ranges, reinforced testing chambers, controlled demolition areas and modular combat environments allow experimental technology to be evaluated without exposing it to the surface.

Dedicated freight systems connect Level -5 directly to the underground hangars, allowing heavy equipment and prototypes to be transported without passing through residential or sensitive biological sections.

Level -6 Containment and Quarantine

The sixth level is dedicated almost entirely to keeping dangerous things inside.

Rather than constructing a single prison or containment area, the level is divided into numerous independent blocks. Biological specimens, dangerous individuals, unstable technologies, hazardous substances and experimental materials can therefore be separated according to the specific containment requirements of each subject.

Each major block possesses independent atmospheric systems, emergency power and security controls. Individual sections can be completely isolated from the rest of Shadow Laboratory.

Quarantine facilities are also located here. Personnel exposed to unknown organisms, substances or artifacts can be isolated immediately upon returning to the facility.

Access is strictly controlled. Even senior researchers generally receive temporary authorization for a specific containment block rather than unrestricted access to the entire level.

Level -7 Black Archives and Force Research

Level -7 contains the accumulated knowledge of Shadow Laboratory.

Highly secured computer systems preserve scientific data, experimental results, technical schematics, genetic archives and records recovered from the original facility on Taspir III. Particularly sensitive information is maintained on isolated systems disconnected from the laboratory's ordinary network.

Physical archives occupy another portion of the level.

These include recovered artifacts, ancient texts, holocrons and other objects associated with Sith history, alchemy and the Force. Specialized research chambers allow such objects to be studied without moving them into the conventional scientific sections.

Some individual archives require authorization beyond normal laboratory security clearance, ensuring that knowledge concerning the most sensitive projects remains compartmentalized even among senior personnel.

Level -8 Black Projects and Command Sector

Officially, Shadow Laboratory has seven subterranean levels.

Level -8 does not appear on ordinary maps, maintenance plans, personnel directories or navigation systems. Standard elevators cannot reach it and most inhabitants of the facility are completely unaware of its existence.

The level contains the most sensitive projects undertaken within Shadow Laboratory, along with isolated laboratories whose existence Lyssara does not wish to disclose even to much of her own scientific staff.

A secondary command center located here can assume control of essential facility functions if the principal command infrastructure is compromised. Independent communications, data storage, environmental controls, emergency supplies and power systems allow the sector to continue functioning even if it becomes isolated from the rest of the complex.

Access is possible through several deliberately concealed and heavily restricted routes. The most important is Lyssara Thrynn's private elevator.

Hidden inside her apartment on Level -3, the elevator travels directly to Level -8 without stopping at any intermediate level. Its existence is omitted from ordinary security systems and architectural records. For Lyssara, it provides a means of moving between her private quarters and the most classified section of Shadow Laboratory without passing through publicly monitored sections of the complex.

Level -8 is consequently the true heart of Shadow Laboratory: the place where projects too sensitive for the rest of the facility are conducted and where knowledge can disappear entirely from the official record.

SECURITY

Security Rating: High

Shadow Laboratory was designed as both a research installation and a hardened underground bunker. Its greatest defensive advantages are secrecy, isolation, depth and compartmentalization rather than overwhelming conventional firepower.

Its security measures include:

• Security Droids: Armed security droids patrol important corridors, laboratories, hangars and restricted sectors. Their routes are periodically modified by the central security system.
• Anti EMP Level minus two features EMP protection and an independent backup generator to prevent the machines from shutting down and causing the structure to collapse.
• Automated Turrets: Retractable anti-personnel and anti-droid turrets are positioned at critical junctions, hangars, elevators, security checkpoints and approaches to sensitive laboratories. Most remain concealed while the facility operates normally.
• External Defensive Emplacements: Concealed defensive weapons protect the immediate approaches to the surface installation and landing platform. These remain hidden beneath armored housings when inactive in order to preserve the meteorological station's appearance.
• Surveillance Network: Cameras, thermal sensors, motion detectors and other monitoring equipment cover corridors, laboratories, hangars, elevators and access points. Sensitive sectors employ overlapping surveillance rather than relying upon a single system.
• Automated Security Systems: A centralized security network monitors movement throughout the facility, identifies unauthorized access attempts and can automatically seal affected sectors.
• Biometric Access: Restricted areas require combinations of identification credentials, biometric verification and security clearance. More sensitive areas can require authorization from multiple individuals.
• Security Personnel: Organic security teams provide a response force where automated defenses are inappropriate or insufficient. Guards are stationed at important checkpoints and can be rapidly deployed through the facility.
• Compartmentalized Bulkheads: Heavy blast doors divide each level into independent sections. During an emergency, compromised areas can be isolated within seconds.
• Independent Atmospheric Controls: Biological laboratories and containment sectors possess independent ventilation systems. Contaminated areas can therefore be isolated without circulating hazardous material through the rest of the complex.
• Internal Sensor Grid: Atmospheric sensors continuously monitor radiation, toxins, biological contaminants, pressure changes, fires and unusual energy signatures.
• Electronic Security: Sensitive computer systems are protected through encryption, restricted terminals and compartmentalized networks. The most classified archives are physically isolated from ordinary facility networks.
• Hangar Security: The primary hangar entrance is concealed beneath the surface and protected by enormous armored doors. The descending landing platform cannot be activated without authorization from within the facility.
• Hidden Surface Profile: The installation's first defensive layer is remaining undiscovered. Surface structures deliberately resemble an ordinary meteorological station, while most of the facility's thermal and energy output is managed below ground.
• Emergency Lockdown: Individual rooms, laboratory wings, entire floors or the complete installation can be placed under lockdown depending upon the severity of a security breach.
• Containment Protocols: Level -6 possesses additional independent security systems specifically intended to prevent contained subjects or hazardous materials from escaping into the rest of the facility.
• Redundant Power: Critical security systems, containment fields, life support and command infrastructure possess backup power independent of the primary reactor network.
• Restricted Level -8 Access: Level -8 is absent from normal facility records and inaccessible through conventional elevators. Knowledge of its entrances is deliberately restricted, with Lyssara's private elevator providing one of the few direct access routes.
• ADA, can interact with the labs. He was constructed with the support of ADA IA too.

Despite these measures, Shadow Laboratory is not impregnable. Damage to its power infrastructure, sabotage from within, compromised authorization credentials or the progressive loss of isolated sectors could weaken its defensive network. Its extensive compartmentalization is intended to slow an attacker and preserve critical sections rather than make the installation impossible to breach.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Shadow Laboratory on Formac was born from the end of another chapter in Lyssara Thrynn's life.

For years, Lyssara had maintained her laboratory on Taspir III. The original Shadow Laboratory provided her with the infrastructure necessary to conduct scientific research away from unwanted attention, becoming home to increasingly ambitious experiments in biology, advanced technology, antimatter and other classified fields.

It was effective, but it was never perfect.

Space was limited. Laboratories designed for one purpose were eventually forced to accommodate another. New projects required modifications to infrastructure never designed to support them. As Lyssara's ambitions grew, so too did the limitations of the facility around her.

The fall of the Diarchy ultimately provided the opportunity for change.

Following its collapse, Lyssara went into exile and withdrew to the frozen world of Formac. Isolation initially made the planet a refuge, but its remoteness, frozen surface and distance from ordinary galactic activity soon made its greater potential obvious.

Rather than merely hiding on Formac, Lyssara decided to rebuild.

This time, however, she possessed something she had lacked when constructing the original Shadow Laboratory: resources, credits and time.

There was no reason to reproduce the compromises of Taspir III.

Working jointly with Nyva Shei, Lyssara began planning a new installation beneath Formac's ice. The intention was not simply to replace the old Shadow Laboratory but to construct everything the original facility could have become had resources and physical space never constrained its development.

Excavation consequently went far beyond what was necessary for a conventional laboratory. Vast chambers were carved beneath the ice and into the underlying rock. Entire levels were dedicated to disciplines that had previously been forced to coexist. Hangars, industrial workshops, containment sectors, residential areas and redundant infrastructure transformed the project from a laboratory into a self-sufficient subterranean complex.

Above it, only a meteorological station was constructed.

The deception was deliberate. Anyone discovering the installation from the surface would see precisely what they expected to see on an isolated frozen world: sensors, antennae and equipment gathering atmospheric and geological data.

Construction continued beneath their feet.

Once sufficient infrastructure had been completed, equipment, research material, archives and projects from the aging Taspir III laboratory could be transferred to Formac. Valuable machinery was incorporated into the new installation where appropriate, while outdated systems were replaced rather than preserved simply for familiarity.

The move also gave Lyssara an opportunity to reorganize years of accumulated research.

Projects once separated only by locked doors could now occupy independent sectors. Dangerous biological research received dedicated containment infrastructure. Antimatter experiments were moved into purpose-built chambers. Military prototypes gained their own manufacturing and testing facilities. Archives could be physically separated from external networks.

And beneath all of it, Level -8 was constructed.

Its existence was concealed even during the wider construction project. Access points were incorporated into sections controlled directly by Lyssara, including the private elevator hidden within her own apartment.

By the time Shadow Laboratory became fully operational, very little remained visible from Formac's surface.

The old laboratory on Taspir III had been somewhere Lyssara could conduct her work.

The Shadow Laboratory on Formac was built to ensure that, this time, the facility would grow with that work rather than eventually stand in its way.
