During an expedition into the Netherworld, Seren encountered a pack of spectral sentinel hounds within the Dunes of Despair. Unlike creatures that could simply be conquered, summoned, or bound into obedience, the sentinels demanded something considerably more personal from anyone seeking their allegiance.
Seren approached them unarmed and offered connection rather than domination. The hounds searched through her memories, intentions, and the contradictions that had shaped her life, judging the person beneath the titles of Jedi, Sith, Darth, noblewoman, and sorceress. They found neither purity nor complete corruption. Instead of attacking her, they accepted her and chose to follow.
Seren consequently regards the hounds as companions rather than possessions. They gave their allegiance freely, and she has little interest in reducing that choice to ownership. Their nature also holds particular significance for her. The sentinels exist in shadow without being defined solely by Light or Dark, judging others by action, intention, and character rather than affiliation.
Their acceptance came during a period when Seren herself had begun questioning many of those same distinctions.

Seren continues to live on Malachor, even though the planet is now under Mandalorian control. Her home lies within an isolated cave system deep beneath the fractured surface, which she named Obsidian Hollow.
The Hollow serves as her home, sanctuary, laboratory, and archive. Its winding passages contain chambers devoted to meditation, ritual work, relic storage, translation, and the containment of dangerous artifacts. Wards and concealment techniques obscure much of the cave system from casual discovery, though Seren no longer treats it solely as a fortress against the galaxy.
It is the first place she has consciously allowed to become a home.
Varin is welcome there in a way few others are.

That future ended when the Jedi discovered her sensitivity to the Force.

Becoming a Jedi brought distinction to their name, but it also removed Seren from the life, expectations, and responsibilities she was born into.

She did not consider knowledge inherently corrupting and refused to accept that ignorance was a form of protection. To Seren, refusing to understand darkness did not prevent corruption. When ordered to abandon her research, she refused.
The Jedi cast her out.
Seren left without protest, though the rejection shaped her more deeply than she allowed anyone to see. She did not return to Alderaan or attempt to reclaim the life she had left behind. Whether motivated by shame, pride, fear of rejection, or a desire to shield her family from the consequences of her choices, she instead followed her research to Malachor, a world saturated with ancient suffering and residual darkness.
There, she aligned herself with the Dark Court.

Seren later aligned herself with the Sith Covenant and maintained a loose association with the broader Sith Order. Those connections gave her access to knowledge, capable allies, and opportunities to test her abilities beyond Malachor's controlled environment.

That certainty began to fracture on Thyferra.
Seren entered the Sith invasion knowing herself as Sith. She carried Voidstar with its crimson blade without shame or hesitation and fought beside those she had chosen to regard as allies. When she encountered Jedi Knight Aiden Porte amid the fighting, the distinction between them appeared equally simple. Seren stood with the Sith. Aiden stood with the Jedi. They fought.
Only afterward did that simplicity begin to trouble her.
The confrontation left Seren wounded, but the physical injuries proved less consequential than what followed. During the battle, a defensive measure temporarily severed access to the Force across the surrounding area. For someone who had known its presence for most of her life, the resulting absence was profound. Seren could not sense the battlefield around her, could not reach the shadows that had become almost instinctive extensions of herself, and could not even perceive her own familiar presence within the Force.
Most frighteningly, she could no longer sense Varin.
He was somewhere else on Thyferra fighting his own battle. Seren understood intellectually that the silence surrounding him was part of the same greater absence, yet knowledge did little to prevent the immediate fear that he might be dead. Only then did she begin to understand how thoroughly the Force had become intertwined not merely with her abilities, but with the people and connections she feared losing.
When continuing the confrontation offered no meaningful purpose beyond refusing defeat, Seren surrendered. She set Voidstar aside and let herself be taken, rather than keep fighting, simply because the person standing opposite her belonged to the Order she had once called home.
The decision did not immediately transform her.
Seren returned from Thyferra still carrying Sith knowledge, Sith techniques, a crimson lightsaber, and years of choices she had no intention of pretending had never happened. A pack of sentinel Phantom Hounds examined her memories, intentions, and character before choosing to follow her of their own accord.

The realization frightened her more than any enemy or ritual ever had.

However, the barriers she keeps no longer exist to prevent Varin from reaching her.
