Seeking Opinions on First Order Government/Diplomacy

Hello!

I love the First Order. I think it's wonderful. And I love playing government characters, because that's just the kind of nerd I am. I designed the First Order government system several months ago, based generally on the Imperial Moff system we understood from the films and books. Over the last several months I have been less than active due to some competing priorities, and am currently studying to take a professional exam at the end of next month, so my time is a bit scarce (hence, my character's 'death' and my relinquishing any positions of authority in the faction). But following that, I intend to come back (IC and OOC) and see what I can do to improve upon the government system in place.

To that end, I would like to get some feedback about what others are thinking as it relates to this area. These sorts of roles can be difficult to play in an environment that prioritizes combat, and particularly in a military-dominated faction it can be awkward to determine where such an organization should "fit" and how it will interact with the other branches of the faction. At the same time, it can become too complicated and unapproachable, making new members unlikely to be interested.

So, that's why I'm asking everyone to share their opinion. You don't need to be a member of, or have any interest in, the government/diplomatic service to vote or comment (technically, I'm not a member and I made the poll, because I'm a rebel like that). I hope to engage in a robust discussion about this! :)

Is a pleb and cannot officially vote in the poll according to the forum .

I would love to, but Valessia is not officially with the FO, or actually in it. Although she'd probably jump at the chance to represent them if it were plausible for her to do so. OOCly I would love to work to help grow the faction and draw some more interest into it. I think I've said this before but I am very much into just developing what we have already before moving out for anything else. I think ICly Valessia would love to really align herself with First Order, get them as a major investor. She's just not so certain how that's going to look on her when she's home on Brentaal IV which from my understanding is still within OS borders...

With that said, however; Valessia has a bit of a silver tongue. She can be very persuasive, she's got a lot of charisma (this is her best stat). She's a linguist and is able to study and learn other languages. She also truly believes in the ideals of the First Order. So I could certainly see her working as a diplomat for the First Order!

This is interesting. I don't mean to speak for your character at all, but it seems like she might be very helpful as a sort of "brand ambassador" -- someone who can set up meetings with diverse contacts and peddle soft influence as an example of the kinds of benefits there are to existing within the First Order's sphere of influence (i.e. stability and order being better for manufacturing and trade than random Sith Lords blowing stuff up in their endless struggle for power, or the incessant bureaucratic malaise brought on by the more 'democratic' societies).

Just a thought I had, which if you'd like to, we can explore?

P.S. Natasi's wardrobe either 1) burned with Herevan Hold or 2) was donated after the reading of her will. Can we talk new threads? :p

[member="Valessia Brentioch"] - I think that your character could really do well in a government role w/ the FO! Based on what I've seen in our threads, I think she could make a huge impact, and it would be a lot of fun to see.

[member="Natasi Fortan"] - The current government structure may look a bit intimidating at first, but that's to be expected with such roles. I think it's just a matter of finding the right people, and making sure that there's some open threads for politicians/ways to get them active in dominions.

In the future, perhaps Marzena's role as a propaganda figure can be expanded a bit. Maybe she can have some sort of honorary title? She would want to keep doing what she does now (attend social events), but represent the FO in an more official capacity. Nothing too complex - she's the Daphne of the Scooby-Doo gang lol.

Oh, oh for sure she is certainly someone who is more than capable of being a 'soft brand' ambassador. I mean she's all for reminding all those poor unfortunate souls what life with the First Order could bring. I am certainly interested in exploring such things. Consequently, she might be able to help you with that - she's due to meet with [member="Marzena Choi"] on a collaboration of sorts, so once we've created the new line we can send some 'samples' your way.

Judging by the taste and elegance shown in real-life pop star fashion collaborations, what could possibly go wrong? :p

I can already tell that [member="Marzena Choi"], [member="Valessia Brentioch"], and Natasi are going to be dear friends... Or dead by each other's hands within six weeks.
My dear, dead is simply another word for feeling alive.

The One Sith focuses too much on hard power. Soft power is the one thing we can build up more effectively than other dark-sided factions. Although I may not be a First Order fanatic to the extent even Valessia or Marzena are, at least we know how we are different from other dark-sided factions by now...

Bump bump! Anyone else interested in weighing in on this? I'd like to get started working on my overhaul proposal and get the discussion going on ways to reform, but I don't want anyone to miss out on their opportunity to comment.

Maybe we could do a sort of cross training with other factions military folk? Or joint exercises? Something that could improve relations while allowing the war dogs to play.
Can you elaborate a little? I'm not sure I'm getting the full picture.

I quite enjoy diplomacy, but I also equally enjoy military RP. From both an IC and OOC standpoint, separating government too far apart into civil and martial means risking what I've seen as stagnation and more inaction in other factions, compared to ones that allow people, if they wish, to do both civil and martial. Sometimes there's no war, and the military has nothing to do. Sometimes there's no diplomacy or government in session, and there's no politics to do. For a faction such as the First Order, seeing its more authoritarian traits, and being a galactic power, I think that people would dabble in a variety of things. Allowing variety also may allow lesser tension between departments with conflicting interests, as people can see both sides. I like the Moff council structure in that people can have good purposes.
Also, diplomacy doesn't just have to be nice guy agreements. We could have members set up companies with government support, giving a competitive industry. We have Bespin, and dirty things like extortion of foreign companies and even exclusive mining rights would be interesting.
I guess my point is that certain positions can easily mean keeping people couped up in their offices, and after all this is a place where RP is best when interacting with other people.
Anyways, sorry for the babbling.

I've always been happy with Government personal having some sort of military authority. Basically making their job less structured to being able to be part of any style of thread.

I agree, but they technically don't have official authority at the moment. Moffs had military authority in the Empire because of both convoluted laws, as well as the fact that many of them simultaneously had the rank of Surface Marshal, so their word wasn't conflicting with official military personnel.
