Character Sebastian Sorrel

Beric Sorrel was a highly intelligent engineer, known for his innovative creations across the Droid sector. Born in the Deep Core, he was afforded a life of luxury and privilege; he attended a prestigious University on Coruscant, and his family held long-formed ties with the Council of Serenno and Lianna. Indeed, it's said that the House of Sorrel originated upon Serenno itself, Council-sitting nobility up until the generation prior to Beric's grandfather. Why exactly they chose to vacate the world and the titles which came with their status there isn't exactly well known, in fact throughout Beric's life it seemed as though the matter was rather hushed up.

At any rate, it was Lianna which became his home and when he came to form a family of his own it was there he laid his roots. His wife, Luthien, was a botanical genius, born to a long line of explorers who delved into the Outer Rim in search of lost wonders and new lifeforms. Where her father tended toward zoology, it was the flora of these distant worlds which caught her eye and she took to making as green a space as she could out of any vessel or place they called home. Wherever Luthien went, provided she put in the effort, she could find a way to make that verdant life blossom. It was this green-thumb of hers which first caught Beric's eye, she was the earthly, whimsical sprite which offset his more technical, mechanical self.

It was a match made in Iego, and though Beric's father wasn't initially pleased with who had caught his sons eye he soon left his concerns on the wayside when they provided him with his first grandchild. Ari was a bright young girl from the start, quick to stand and walk, always babbling away, and ready to read long before it was expected of her for her studies. She was the apple of her family's eye, cherished even when the first of her siblings arrived. Tobin by comparison was much quieter, yet he held within that somber silence a gently held wisdom that quickly outgrew his age. Though he was not often one to speak, when he did he had much to share.

For many years this was how their family existed. A highly sought after engineer, his nature-loving wife, and their two impressive children. It was not uncommon for them to travel, either to satiate their mother's wanderlust or to accommodate some new venture their father had been roped into. This lack of real permanence was used to its advantage, and the children soon became fairly worldly and well rounded, empathetic to other species and understanding of many ways of life. However this freedom the family endured was not to last, and the luxuries they had been afforded were swiftly stripped from them in one fell swoop.

It came in the form of technical malfunctions while they were venturing off the beaten path on some rumour Luthien had heard. Hidden within the crook of the Tingel Arm, a previously undiscovered world had been picked up on from a distance, capable of sustaining life or so her sources said. Hidden beyond an asteroid cluster, it had been overlooked for millennia yet a recent disruption had caused scanners to pick up on the astrological bodies it shared a system with.

In all her eager haste, Luthien forgot to make her usually up to date logs public as they approached the cluster and beyond; no one was aware of where they'd gone, and as such when their vessel was struck by wickedly erratic space debris the rest of the Galaxy who would have noticed their absence failed to understand what had happened. In time the Sorrels of Lianna were more or less forgotten, immortalized only in the work they'd left behind. There was always another budding engineer, and even more botanists, to fill any void which might have been left behind.

Though that might have been the end of their story insofar as the Galaxy can recall, for the Sorrels it proved to be the start of something new. This world they'd been seeking out happened to be the landing spot for their crashed ship, yet without the correct pieces on hand to fix what had been broken they were decidedly stuck in place. They tried every day for almost a full Coruscanti year to send an SOS signal through their communication system, but the asteroid cluster, alongside their distance from any long range transmitter, left them shouting into the void. Help was not going to come, so they had to make the best of their situation.

Over the next few years a small homestead was forged, using the local resources as well as salvage from the busted ship for materials. Of the latter they had only so much, and Beric was reluctant to use up all of their resources all at once. For the most part they lived off the land, with their own hands and that which could be created for assistance. Crude tools, weapons to fend off the native carnivores, and eventually one haphazardly strung together droid to help around the place. Their mostly wooden home became a sanctuary against the world they knew so little about, and while Beric continually sought ways to get them off-world again Luthien worried more about surviving in the meantime. She scoured the local area in search of edible plants, animals which could be farmed for fiber, or sustenance, or fats, and while it was slow going at first, and there were times things seemed impressively dire, she pulled them through it.

Luthien learned to spin wool into yarn, then knitted that into fabric which could be used for all manner of functions. She rendered fat into tallow through which she formed soaps and candles. They had only the information they could salvage from the ship, some holobooks and datacrons on various different topics, to aid them, and everything beyond that was simply a matter of trial and error.

Within all of this madness, Beric and Luthien welcomed their third, fourth, and fifth children. The first was a son, Sebastian, born just a year or so after they crashed, and then almost eight years into their fight for survival they gave birth to twin girls, Rhian and Olira. Ordinarily it would have been a blessed revelation, auspicious in the eyes of many, but theirs was an ever crumbling society and two extra mouths to feed could have spelled disaster. Thankfully the three older children were willing and able to take up the slack, helping in expanding paddocks and fields, hunting and harvesting, and adding on to their humble a-frame home. Though both parents did their best to educate the children necessity overrode luxury and it mostly resulted in more hands on instruction. How to purify water, how to figure out which plants were safe to eat, how to harvest seeds and preserve them for the next growing season, how to cook, to build simple structures and fires.

But every night without fail they sat together as a family and crafted oral stories. Writing instruments were a pain to create, from paper to charcoal it was time they could better spend elsewhere. In time though it was something which began to interest their third born, and whenever he had free time (truly a rarity) he took it upon himself to form paper out of pulp. He'd craft crude pencils from the scrap remnants of wood they burned for light and warmth, and slowly began to keep note of some of his favourite stories told at night. Pieces of paper weren't exactly the easiest to keep safe or in order, though, so with time he had to figure out ways to bind them together and keep them safe. Scraps of leather and yarn soon became books, and though it was indeed a frivolity both parents encouraged his creativity and industriousness. After all, the entire family soon came to benefit from his work.

Of course he helped as much as the other kids in ordinary tasks. Most specifically he was deemed of green enough thumb to assist his mother with the bulk of their crops. Truly he spent more time with his mother than anyone else, he'd sit with her and watch her spin yarn with a drop spindle she'd crudely made, and in time would even try for himself, and when she cooked he'd always offer to help prep. That's not to say he wasn't close with his father, of course, in fact the pair made a point of tracking the stars each night once the stories had been told and the lights were out. Together they made up names and constellations for each, stories about how the shapes were formed.

All in all it was a far simpler life than either Beric or Luthien had been raised within, and at the same time it was backbreaking, tiring work. Constantly learning new skills, making mistakes which almost cost them their lives, playing the role of hunter, gatherer, teacher, crafter, cook, and parent... There was never a solitary moment, never time to truly unwind, not for any of them. For the children at least this was simply all they'd really known, even Ari and Tobin could barely remember their lives before the crash, but their parents never stopped hoping for a way off their verdant prison.
