HISTORY
Born from escaped slaves on Nar Shadaa, he had no Tribe to call upon growing up, only the other bottom-feeders. His mother eventually found work in a mechanic's shop, but when business slumped, her employer turned them in to slave catchers. Scratches got away, but his mother was recaptured and his father was killed trying to defend her. Scratches went back onto the street, working the odd job he could, otherwise making his way as a salvager.
While searching for clues about the fate of his mother, he came across a girl his age named Digs-the-Sands, whose family had recently been captured in a slave raid. She had managed to get away, and Scratches helped her remain hidden. Having never known anything else, Scratches taught Digs what he knew so they could survive. Being lost teenagers, they quickly fell in love, and within a few years, Digs had gotten pregnant.
Scratches-Metal had no intention of raising his child on the streets of Nar Shadaa, and tried to make a big score to pay for a ticket to Taris, where there was a considerable Cathar community they would be able to find work on. However, it seemed that history was doomed to repeat himself - though he faithfully carried out his part of the job, his employer betrayed him to the Hutts. Digs went into hiding, and Scratches was thrown into the Gladiator pits. As far as he knew, Digs was killed, captured, or had somehow escaped. Either way, there was nothing he could do.
Having lost everything, Scratches nearly died in the pits. But the ferocity with which he had fought upon his capture had an inspiration to his teacher, who quickly found a way to get the boy to fight: Adrenals. Whenever his teacher needed Scratches to fight, he would pump the teenage Cathar with rage-inducing Adrenals, and nothing mattered. Before long, Scratches had thrown himself into becoming a Gladiator, and became one of the best, quickly rising to fame.
It was clear, however, that his use of Adrenals would wear out his body quickly, and so his owners wanted to make the best of what they had, and so they gave him a choice of mates. Although he was protective of them, he didn't take to any of them - none of them were the woman and child he'd already lost. It was a particularly calcitrant Cathar that finally won him over - Basks-in-Light. She was stubborn and smart, and was determined to use Scratches-Metal as a means of escape. She began regulating his drugs and medicines, kept him on a healthy diet and exercise regimen, and helped him focus on living again. She discovered his knack for machines, and encouraged him to find investors to pay for parts.
Betting his own Pod, he raced for the first time, and made bank. He was now a gladiator in two arenas.
Basks and Scratches quickly began plotting their freedom; it would be expensive and difficult, as any earnings he made in the Gladiator arena went to their owners. But by racing and doing jobs as a thug, Scratches could gradually save money to buy freedom for themselves and their now numerous children.
