The Sanguivar is a specialized Yuuzhan Vong biot engineered by Darth Carnifex following his study of an unusual mutation within the bloodstream of Jedi Master Katarine Ryiah.
Katarine's mutation produces an abnormal physiological response to prolonged exposure to the Dark Side of the Force and, particularly, to individuals strongly immersed within it. Rather than merely sensing such corruption through the Force, her body reacts to it chemically. Exposure can produce weakness, dizziness, disorientation, lightheadedness, impaired judgment, and an almost intoxicating sense of euphoria. Prolonged separation following significant exposure can likewise produce symptoms resembling withdrawal, leaving Katarine physically ill and increasingly vulnerable.
Carnifex became fascinated by the mutation after encountering the Jedi Master and subsequently studying her within the laboratories of Adamantinarx, the Black Pyramid. Through controlled experimentation, he discovered something peculiar: Katarine's reaction could be suppressed when her bloodstream contained traces of his own blood.
The presence of Carnifex's blood did not cure the mutation. Instead, it appeared to acclimate Katarine's body to the presence of the Dark Side.
With sufficiently diluted quantities circulating through her system, the violent physiological response to the darkness diminished. Her thoughts became clearer. Vertigo subsided. The euphoric haze caused by proximity to powerful darksiders became manageable, allowing her to remain functional in circumstances that might otherwise overwhelm her.
Carnifex transformed this discovery into the Sanguivar.
Rather than constructing a conventional mechanical implant, he cultivated a living organism from Yuuzhan Vong biotechnology and modified it specifically for Katarine's biology. Surgically implanted deep within the torso and intertwined with several major blood vessels, the Sanguivar behaves almost like an auxiliary organ.
At its center is a small expandable biological chamber known as the bloodwell.
The bloodwell stores a concentrated supply of Carnifex's blood. Microscopic tendrils extending from the Sanguivar continuously monitor changes within Katarine's circulation, including hormonal stress responses and the biological abnormalities associated with her mutation. When those reactions begin to intensify, the organism releases minute quantities of Carnifex's blood into her bloodstream.
The process is slow enough that Katarine is rarely consciously aware of it.
A drop becomes a trace.
A trace becomes equilibrium.
So long as the bloodwell remains sufficiently filled, the Sanguivar dampens the worst effects of Katarine's mutation. She can stand among Sith without collapsing beneath the sensation of the Dark Side. She can think through the artificial euphoria rather than surrendering to it. Even the withdrawal symptoms that once followed prolonged exposure are greatly diminished.
But the Sanguivar was never intended to free Katarine from her condition.
It was designed to make Carnifex indispensable to the Jedi Master.
The organism cannot manufacture the substance it delivers. Nor will it accept just any donor. During its creation, Carnifex conditioned the Sanguivar to recognize the unique biological markers within his blood. Attempts to replenish the bloodwell with incompatible blood are rejected by the creature, which seals itself against contamination.
Eventually, the reservoir runs dry.
When that happens, the protection begins to fade.
The return is gradual at first: a faint tremor in the hands, momentary dizziness, difficulty concentrating. Then comes the weakness. The hypersensitivity. The intoxicating pull of nearby darkness. And finally the withdrawal symptoms the Sanguivar had kept quietly beneath the surface. With the device empty the withdrawal symptoms can become so severe they will kill Katarine, causing her body to slowly shut down one system at a time.
There is only one reliable method of restoring it.
Katarine must return to Darth Carnifex to feed on his blood. Carnifex can replenish the Sanguivar's bloodwell and restore its regulating function. The procedure requires only a small quantity of blood, but its consequences are profound.
Carnifex therefore does not need chains to keep Katarine tethered to him.
He placed the chain beneath her skin.
The Sanguivar is simultaneously medicine, parasite, and an instrument of coercion. It grants Katarine something she desperately needs, the ability to retain control of herself in the presence of the Dark Side, while ensuring that the source of that control remains firmly in Carnifex's hands.
He can replenish it.
He can withhold it.
Should Katarine refuse him for long enough, her own blood will eventually remind her who possesses the remedy. Among Carnifex's creations, the Sanguivar is unusual because it was never engineered primarily to kill, maim, or transform its host.
Its purpose is considerably subtler. It keeps Katarine functional.
It keeps her dependent.
For as long as Darth Carnifex finds the Jedi Master useful, it keeps her coming back to him.
