Private Sands of Time, Always Ticking

Valery's datapad beeped and buzzed with a message that once opened seemed to be from Aeris Lashiec of former NJO fame, but the contents -- as warned by Lashiec herself in said message -- was not in reality written by her but rather by someone else. A brief apology and invite for tea was embedded in the form of a moving picture of a Rodian enthusiastically raising a cup at the camera with the horrendous subtitle "Time for tea!"

Dearest Elder Noble,

I apologize for any difficulties you may have reading this, I am not so used to writing my poems and thoughts down with these machines as I am with a pen and a book.

My name is Nix, you probably don’t remember me. I was part of the group you and our clanswoman once traveled with on your visit to our sandy marble of a home. I have been asked to keep from naming it but you would know it from the daughter you have Collected since she came to you.

Last we saw one another we unleashed a horrifyingly cruel trick upon you, and more than that cast a vile curse of hatred upon our clanswoman. We can’t rid our hands of this guilt and we won’t attempt to plead for absolute forgiveness since it would serve no purpose at this point, but I still wish to clarify the situation if not for my own sake and clarity of mind. I would have done this earlier but poor weather conditions and a year-long march offered me no opportunity to do so.

The woman who had been our Elder at that time when you were visiting was under the impression that had the girl not been given the correct ‘encouragement’ to leave she would potentially seek a reason to stray from her new path and return to us. We didn’t agree, but we did it anyway to our immense shame.

While life out there in the bigger galaxy isn’t very kind from what I have heard, it was cruel to deny her a home. Luckily, if there ever was one of us who would be able to weather the galaxy it would be her.

I was the closest thing she had to a mother once. Survival was the key to everything I had raised her to do from the day that she could walk. The girl is strong, independent, and stubborn, and I know that she will do great no matter what happens to her.

What I wish for this message to convey is that our daughter, now your daughter, in spite of everything still has people at home who love her and while they do miss her, wish her all the best in her mystic career. Lashiec has told us that she had graduated from apprentice to journeyman which fills our hearts with joy.

As for the Elder she passed a little less than two weeks after you left and our clan shattered and split into new ones after that. In part out of shame, in part due to tradition. Which I suppose is part of the newer problem. While the girl has people here who care, the home that she knew no longer exists. Our old codes retired, the trackers reprogrammed, our ashes spread to the cold desert winds.

While a part of me would wish for her to know this, I am unsure if it would do her well to hear of it. In accordance with our laws she is now well and truly without name. She has no clan, no claim to a bloodline, and nearly infinitely small chance of finding those she once cared for again. In short: our planet has forgotten her, but those few of us who remain have not.

I leave this information in your hands to do with as you see wisest. Once again, I am unsure if this would do her well, but all that I ask is that if you know for certain that the girl seeks to return for any reason you tell her this information before she makes landfall. The idea of the type of welcome she would receive as an outsider is not one that fills me with much joy.

Yours sincerely,
Elder Nix, her former caretaker

Almost as if on cue, Colette entered the room once Valery stopped reading. She made her way over to the fridge, uncorked a cold water bottle and slowly downed a good portion of it.

“What’s up?” She asked.

HAIuSyi.png
Valery sat in silence for a moment longer after the message faded from her datapad screen. The soft whir of the cooling unit hummed in the background, mixing with the sound of Colette drinking. Her eyes remained fixed on the screen, though she wasn't reading anymore. Just thinking. Feeling.

When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet but firm.

"Colette," she said, turning her head toward the younger woman, "Can you sit down for a moment?"

There was no alarm in her tone, but the weight behind it was unmistakable.

"I've got something important to tell you."

She set the datapad down gently on the table and looked over with a softness in her eyes that Colette would recognize. Not pity. Not worry. Just care. A depth of it that couldn't be easily put into words.

She had to know.

The kid walked up to the table and was asked to sit down. Her curiosity showed in the way that she raised her brow to question what Valery was doing but she followed along regardless. The chair creaked ever so slightly and she turned to face her adoptive mother by taking another sip of the cold water.

“No really, what’s up?” She asked as worry grasped at her mind for a moment. “Has something happened?”

HAIuSyi.png

"Something did happen," Valery said while she tried to find the right words to deliver this difficult message. She had already gone through this scenario several times in her head, but now that she sat right in front of her daughter, she suddenly struggled to remember what she wanted to say. A Mother's worst nightmares always involved harm or hurt to her children.

This was no different.

"There's no easy way to tell you, so I'll just be open about it," she finally continued after a short pause, "I received a message from your homeworld. From Nix." Another deliberate pause, as she searched for eye contact. "The Elder of the clan at the time we visited has recently passed away, and as a result, the clan has split." She let that sit for a moment, offering Colette a chance to process before she continued.

"It has been a long time since we visited, and I know you've had no contact with them since. But... they were still your family. Nix certainly was."

Valery paused again and offered her daughter a comforting smile.

"You deserve to know."

"... Oh." Colette said in surprise and for a second she seemed sort of out of it. "So you mean.."

Her eyes began to dart from side to side, clearly in deep thought and trying to make sense of things. A heavy silence fell on her for a moment before Colette looked up again.

"Sheila is dead, Nix is alive, and…" She frowned. "The clan is gone."

"They, uh… Cast me out." Colette swallowed. "I saved their lives, and then… They cast me out. Again."

"I-..." She sighed. She tried to speak again but her breath fell short. "I- I guess?"

"Or…" Colette bit her lip. "No."

"They cast me out, they clearly didn't want me around." She said as life returned to her again. "I was clanless before this, I can— no, this is…"

The poor kid was very clearly in shock.

"And Nix, and Red, they…"

HAIuSyi.png

"Come here," Valery said, as she shifted from her seat and wrapped an arm around Colette's shoulders. She pulled her daughter close, hugging her against her chest, and offered room for shock to settle. There would undoubtedly be questions needing answers and emotions that needed space and time to settle. But right at this moment, Valery believed she most of all needed some comfort from someone who cared.

"They do care about you," Valery said after a moment. "The message mentions that they love you and that they've missed you. It's why they went through all this trouble to reach us and share this." Again, she paused and gently let her hand rub along the girl's back, an almost subconscious effort from a Mother who has comforted many crying children.

And Padawans.

"They're going to be okay, but I want to make sure that you will be, too." No matter what it took. If Colette wanted to travel back to find her people or to settle her grief somehow, Valery would not stop her.

But if she just wants a shoulder to lean on, that would be fine, too.

Colette accepted the pat and stroke against her back with a weak smile. Although she wished she could express the feeling she was feeling right now there just weren't words for it. She was happy to know, but also sad for it — yet not really. In a way more as if the lack of sadness is what made her sad. A reaction to her own reaction as if it should have been… More somehow?

"The Elder lived a good life." The kid nodded and put her elbows on the table in thought. "Surrounded by love, and care, and a lot of well-earned respect."

"I don't… Appreciate her. Now." She sighed and then exhaled some measure of her desperation for words. "But she did mean a lot to me as a child. And, I think…"

She went silent for a while.

"I don't know." Colette frowned. "Death is just a small door. They most likely left her body for the animals to eat. To bring food, her energy, to the world again. Supposedly better than any cremation would."

And that made Colette chuckle for a short moment.

"Personally, I would prefer to be cremated. Easier, less messy. Nutrients for trees. They live longer. Be kinda cool to be a small grove somewhere nice, over time."

And then the frown came back.

"Suppose that means the clan has disbanded too?"

HAIuSyi.png

Valery still didn't notice how her hand moved in slow, comforting circles across her daughter's back, even as she leaned forward and began to speak. She simply listened, giving space for any and all thoughts to surface. Loss was a strange thing. It came with so much emotion, yet finding the words to describe it was nearly impossible.

But sometimes, even just talking helped.

"Personally, I'd rather not think about what will happen to your body just yet when that day comes," Valery said with a soft chuckle. "As inevitable as death is, sometimes I wish I could stay with you and the little ones forever." There was something peaceful about death, sure, but Valery loved life, and she hated thinking about anything bad happening to her children.

When Colette mentioned the clan, Valery let out a soft breath and nodded. "It split into various new clans after the Elder passed away. I don't know where they are or how they're doing, but I'm sure they'll manage." They always had, and they were likely used to change by now.

"Do you want to try and find them?"

Valery Noble Valery Noble

Did she want to find them? The thought had crossed her mind. They were technically family, but they were also a source of pain. Except now they didn't exist in that state anymore, and Colette would be alone if she'd go there.

"... No." Colette muttered after a bit of thinking. "I think it's best I… Let that part go."

"Or—..." Colette grew somber. "No. No, I should. The message was most likely a goodbye more than anything. There are no codes to find them, at least that I'd know. And in a way… I don't think she'd want me to."

"Does that make sense?"

HAIuSyi.png

"That makes sense," Valery said with a dip of her head, "It's your choice, now and in the future. I'm sure they can be tracked down if you really wanted to, but if you want to move on, that's completely fine." Sometimes, it was even for the best to avoid dwelling in the past. And, in this case, a past that would never be again.

"Maybe we can-"

She stopped at the sound of footsteps. Three pairs, slowly approaching from around the corner, eyes peeking into the room to see if they were allowed to come inside. Aurra was the first to make the choice and headed straight for Colette, her arms wide to pull her big sister into a hug. She didn't have the Force to sense how someone felt, but she never needed it. Not when it came to the people she cared so much about.

Adam and Aeryn followed, rushing in for a group hug. Not to make the moment sad, but to show with smiles and love how they felt about their sister.

"Colette?" Aurra asked with bright blue eyes staring up at her.

"Do you maybe want to go to the park with us? Or do something fun?"

Valery Noble Valery Noble

It was her choice, and for now it seemed like the best idea to just sort of let it go. Her past with her clan had ended when they threw her out. No matter the reason it was still what had happened, and if she was to be honest with herself it was most likely what would have happened no matter if she had gone with the Jedi or not.

Colette was snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of an oncoming hug train.

"Huh?" She blurted and shook herself awake only to find Aurra there. "Oh! Of course I do!"

Colette smiled at Valery and then the kids.

"I just might be in my head for a little when we do, if that's okay with you? I have a lot to think about. But I will play for sure!"

HAIuSyi.png

Aurra looked up at Colette with a bright smile and gave a small nod. "That's okay," she said softly, her little arms still wrapped around her sister. "I just want to be with you."

Valery watched the exchange with a warm look, then rose to her feet and stepped over. She wrapped an arm around Colette in a quick but comforting sidehug, "Trust me, nothing clears the mind like chasing three wild children across a park. You'll barely have time to think."

She glanced at the triplets with a smirk.

"Alright, go grab your shoes and anything else you want to bring. Park trip starts now."

"Yay!" the three shouted together, bursting with excitement as they scrambled to get ready.

"I want to be with you guys too." Colette smiled back. "You've been my best friends since before you could even talk."

Since that time she had watched over them with Vera when Valery had been kidnapped and tortured. Before Colette was even really family. Hard not to get attached when something like that happens. To see them scramble to get dressed for playtime would never ever get old. And perhaps much like their mother there was a part of Colette that would never really be ready for the day when they wouldn't be around to do that anymore.

She placed her hand on Valery's shoulder as they stood over the kids with a small whisper.

"Do they have to grow up?"

HAIuSyi.png

Valery let out a soft laugh. Her eyes stayed on the triplets as they scrambled with urgency, a blur of shoes and backpacks and joy. "I wish they didn't sometimes," she said quietly, "But we have Eryx and Yvaine still. Plenty of little ones to chase around for a long time yet."

She glanced at Colette with a smile that lingered just a little longer.

Before anything else could be said, the triplets came bursting back into the room, their shoes on the wrong feet, backpacks swinging wildly behind them.

"We're ready!" Aeryn declared with a proud grin.

Adam and Aurra followed with matching energy, arms lifted as if ready to take off running that very second.

Valery raised both hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. Let's move out before someone knocks over the furniture." She turned slightly to Colette.

"Come on, let's have some fun."

Valery Noble Valery Noble

The inevitability of the triplets growing up was a melancholic topic, but luckily not one they had to dwell on for too long. Right now there was a small horde of unruly children waiting to be entertained, and Colette knew better than to let them wait for too long.

"Let's." Colette smiled at her master and mother and ushered her out the door so that she could lock it behind them.

A small walk took them down to the local pond. The triplets skipped across the place one after another with Colette in tow, each getting their turn to piggyback on her as they went. Once they reached a less populated part of the park she put Adam down on the ground and put her hands on her hip to stand like a giant above them.

Even if it sometimes felt like that gap would be switched around sooner rather than later.

"Alright!" Colette smiled and huffed. "What do we do first?"

HAIuSyi.png
Valery stayed a few steps behind at first, hands in her pockets and a smile tugging at her lips as she watched Colette handle the three gremlins. It never got old, seeing how easily they connected with her. Each one clung to her like she was the coolest person in the galaxy. In their eyes, she probably was.

By the time they reached the clearing, the breeze had picked up just enough to rustle the tall grass by the water. Valery came to a stop just behind Colette, arms folded lightly as she took in the scene with an amused look.

"You've got their full attention now," she said with a chuckle.

Because the second Colette asked what came next, all three turned toward her at once. There was a beat of silence. Then Aeryn stepped forward slowly, hands clasped behind her back like she was trying to look far more innocent than she ever actually was.

She reached Colette, tapped her on the leg, and grinned.

"Tag. You're it."

The moment hung for half a second before the trio burst into laughter and scattered in three directions, each one yelling over the other about who was going to be caught first.

Valery didn't move to stop them.

She just laughed, and gave Colette a look that said good luck.

"I know." Colette smiled back at Valery just before she got tagged. "Oh nooo~!"

No getting backsies on this one. Adam had tried to create a distance from himself and Colette, shifted and swayed from side to side as if to anticipate her direction while her eyes fixated on him like a hawk. He knew he had been chosen, and he knew to run.

Colette jogged off towards him, making sure not to ruin the fun time for the children more than anything and provide them with a much needed outlet of energy. It'd mean a quiet evening, and it'd mean a good night's rest.

For now she would let them slip from her fingers. First Adam, then Aurra, then Aeryn.

"Awww dang!" She exclaimed and laughed as she chased them all. "Slippery like eels!"

HAIuSyi.png

The laughter carried through the park like music to Valery's ears. She shifted to lean against one of the nearby trees, arms still folded, but her smile had grown with every second she could watch her children play. She watched as Adam darted left, Aurra right, and Aeryn veered into the middle just long enough to try a spin that nearly tripped her up.

"You've got your hands full now," Valery called after her with a grin.

The triplets screamed with laughter, calling her name and egging her on between breaths.

"Too slow!" Adam yelled.

"Can't catch me!" Aeryn added.

Only Aurra didn't call out to her big sister. She was too busy laughing and giggling.

They ran as if the fate of the galaxy depended on it, weaving through playground equipment and back toward the larger slide near the edge of the clearing. One by one, they skidded into place behind it, not even trying to be subtle. Feet stuck out from behind the structure, shoulders bumped into one another, and the giggles only got louder when they caught a glimpse of Colette closing in.

"She's coming!" Aurra gasped, bouncing up and down behind the others.

Aeryn peeked around the corner and shrieked with joy.

Valery Noble Valery Noble

"Nuh uh!" Colette grumbled back at Aeryn with a playful grin before she turned to Adam. "Yes, I caaaan~!"

And sure enough although they had all hidden for now, Colette was slowly heading towards them. The troubles of the last hour had begun to slowly fade as she fell into the role of the monster chasing the children same as Nix had with the children of her tribe growing up during playtime.

She peeked around the corner with a low growl only to find that the kids had dispersed, and for a moment Colette was genuinely caught by surprise.

And that was when the children's plan came into play…

HAIuSyi.png
Valery could barely hold back a laugh when she saw the shift in her children's formation. She tilted her head, watching Aeryn and Adam bolt in opposite directions with wild grins on their faces, arms pumping as fast as their legs could carry them.

But her eyes were on Aurra.

The little girl had scaled the side of the slide in complete silence, crouched low and ready at the top. And just as Colette rounded the corner....

Aurra leapt. She landed right on Colette's back with a triumphant squeal, arms wrapping around her neck in a giddy tackle. "I got you! I got you!" she shouted, clinging like she'd just captured a bounty. From the other sides of the playground, Aeryn and Adam erupted into cheers, pointing and laughing as they circled back.

Valery stepped forward from the tree, grinning wide as she watched the chaos unfold.
