TATOOINE | ANCHORHEAD

Tatooine wasn't a new location for the Hound, he was decently familiar with the planet. But Anchorhead wasn't a normal stop for him. Business usually happened over at Mos Eisley, or Mos Espa for the more polite groups he normally dealt with. But this wasn't a business trip, not in the formal sense. A few weapons crates did need to be delivered to some renegades aiming for the Core, but another matter brought him to this side of the planet.

Buried treasure was an old fantasy for many children. Some of those children even grew up chasing said treasure. Others grew up taking the Creed and building a life first before chasing after it. As stupid as he felt for wasting time on it, he was feeling rather confident in the lead he had for this particular treasure. A paper trail, ancient archives mentioning it, even an approximate location.

But that had to wait.

His first order of business was fixing his armour's regulator once again. Either he broke something, or there was a curse placed upon him whenever he came to the desert planet. But every single time he set foot on Tatooine, the fuse blew and he was stuck with the scorching heat. Luckily a nearby cantina would provide him with some comfort before he could continue with his search for a new regulator. A drink was hastily ordered, his helmet set aside. He didn't even care to cover up his armour as he slumped into a booth to relax. Heat waves simmered from the Beskar plates, sizzling with every drop of condensation that fell from his glass as he gulped away.

Reptilian eyes scanned the sandcrawler parked outside the Anchorhead outer market. Jawa merchants were approaching the market with a rough line of droids and salvage carts in tow. The one at the front raising his arms eagerly to a merchant. The Trandoshan let out a low growl but shook his head once before looking away. The Kubaz two alleys away was still squeaking into an comlink, the Ithorians who had arrived earlier still pondered whether to hit the cantina or the bath house on the opposite end of the market. Cloaked farmers moved between stalls, townsfolk scurried around on their errands and no other underworld elements aside from himself and his boss were there.

"Ssssk. Still nothing" he let out a low hiss.

The Quarren crime lord didn't have much to say, still seated on the bench behind him.

A drawn out sniff "I'm growing restless. They should've been here by now." The Trandoshan tilted his head to the side, a single reptilian eye snapping to the Quarren. His eyes narrowed quickly: His boss' legs were sprawled onto the ground, his head was slumped down and his eyes were shut. "Krrr-hssst" he snarled, taking two long strides to close the distance between them. A massive hand reached down to shake some life into the Quarren but no answer came.

The Trandoshan picked up his comlink to call for aid whilst his eyes scanned the surroundings for threats once more. Some of the observant farmers had scattered already. The Ithorians had already started making their way to the bath house and the Kubaz was nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, the Jawas had already started gathering a larger crowd, seemingly interested in their wares.

Dear diary,

The hit went smoothly. An empty syringe can work wonders. Lifting the datapad afterwards wasn't much of a challenge. Another data core secured.

It all feels kinda pointless now. But I've gotta keep myself safe. There's an obvious out, I've been tempted to take it more times than I care to count. Maybe I should. By the stars it is sooooo tempting sometimes.

But hey, at least I met someone new at the cantina. It's the obvious place to escape to, isn't it? But hey, there's a reason it's obvious cuz it's just so good.

[...]

A tender step introduced the blonde to the cantina. The worn soles of her tan boots barely made a sound as she entered. A beige poncho with white angular patterns covered her form loosely, only going snug where her backpack clung to her shoulders. Unlike the sand covered and worn clothes, the holdout blaster hidden under her poncho barely seemed used aside from a few scratches by the tip of the barrel.

Several patrons noticed the new arrival, her eyes snapped up, quickly scanning the people looking at her and the room at large before lowering to avoid any extended eye contact. She inhaled, her jaw clenched, as if summoning a bit of courage before walking up to the bar. Her light frame easily slid into the U-shaped booth already occupied by the armoured Shistavanen and she soon found herself being pushed to his side as a middle-aged human couple, old enough to be her parents, also joined in. It was getting crowded.

When asked what she wanted to order, the girl's answer came as a whisper at first. Her voice only rose to something audible when the bartender let out an annoyed 'What??' She shuffled uncomfortably in her seat and tried again "Water". The bartender rumbled something about wasted space before pouring her a glass whilst she produced the credit he charged for it along with a clear "Thank you"

Once the bartender had turned away, she dug through her backpack until she found a half eaten pallie. After a couple of bites she looked over to the man next to her "Youuur..." she trailed off until realising that it was too late to stop. "Uh, your armour is cool." An awkward smile formed before she looked away, taking another tiny little bite from the pallie.

Hound from the Underground
Yuri was battling against the heat around him, both from his armour and the hot cantina. At least he managed to regain some semblance of a functional person once he received his drink. It was gone in seconds and another one was ordered in rapid succession. The sentiment seemed to be shared when another wanderer sat down beside him, barely able to order a glass of water.

A shadow of a smirk crept up as Yuri nursed his drink.

More people began to escape the heat and piled in against the bar counter, nudging the stranger close to the Hound. He idle watched her from the corner of his eye, taken a little by surprise when she decided to strike up some idle chatter with him. "Uh... thanks." He muttered, turning slightly to get a better look at her.

He was silent for a beat as a hand slid down to idly grip one of his pistols. "If you're planning on robbin' me, just know I got a good nose." He warned her, clearly uncomfortable with the invasion of his personal space. She looked young, weathered and innocent. On a planet of Tatooine, that either meant someone who wouldn't last long or a pickpocket hoping for a score. His mug approached his muzzle for another long sip but his gaze was watching her every move.

The commotion around him, the heat's pressure, the stranger pressed against him, ears flicked back and forth and a cold shiver rolled up his spine. He was blind, he couldn't draw, he was cornered and wide open, he...

"Kark..." He stood up and grabbed his mug as he took a step back. With the momentary peace he looked around for an open booth away from the growing crowd. He turned to leave for it, but paused for a moment to invite the girl with a wave of his hand. The shift in atmosphere was almost immediate when the Hound sat down in the booth. A sigh of relief drifted from his maw and his armoured boots were propped up on the edge of the table. "That's better..." He muttered, eyes closed to savour the moment. When he finally took the chance to get a better look at the girl, a toothy grin took hold.

"So, pickpocket, how much you grab already?" He teased with a snicker.

She had just offered a meek smile in return for his thanks. Her gaze lingered for a beat before flickering just a little before she looked away for another bite. An amused brow rose along a soft smile upon hearing his ideas of what she might be up to. "Robbery, eh?" she let a hint of playfulness slip before shaking her head "I'm not.." It would seem like she'd finally noticed where his hand had gone as her voice trailed off and her eyes had locked onto the weapon for a few long moments.

A deep breath was accompanied by a carefully raised hand. "I wasn't gonna lift anything from you, I swear" she whispered breathlessly, to the point that it was hard to hear her between the chattering crowds and the Bith musicians at the back. She looked away once more, this time for a timid sip of water.

At the other end of the cantina, right where her gaze rested when looking away from the Shistavanen, was the entrance. And this time, the people entering weren't just random strangers like that last time. This time, five, maybe six, cartel members entered. They were recognisable by their ludicrous bandoliers, red and orange scarves and oftentimes by the Imperial blasters that had flooded the black market since the Empire's fall. Sometimes, they'd come en masse to enjoy an evening out together. This time, however, they were looking for something - or someone. It was nothing they tried to hide: They searched anyone wearing a cloak and questioned those whom they approached.

The girl didn't seem to pay them much attention, instead, her head flicked back to the Shistavanen as he stood up. Skepticism marked her blue eyes as he waved for her to come along but one careful step after another led her to his booth. It was a bit farther away from the entrance and, importantly, the bar. Naturally, that made it significantly less crowded. She studied his posture for a moment, head tilted to the side with curious eyes.

"So, pickpocket, how much you grab already?"

She offered an exhausted smile as she shook her head. "It's not like that. I grabbed a few pallies at the market. And, uh, this knife" she dug for a few moments before finally presenting a knife with a pommel made from a piece of a bantha's tusk. A small hint of shame could be discerned from her shrug "The pallies because I was hungry and the knife because it looked nice 'n I figured it might come in handy. But it's just temporary. I'll get back on my feet soon, I swear it. Just gotta find my chance and pounce, y'know?"

Her level of comfort seemed to mirror his rather well. But then, she hadn't given him much reason to draw on her and he hadn't seemed to be escalating his suspicions either. The girl leaned back in her seat with flowing blonde hair drawn over her right shoulder and an ever easier smile spreading across her lips. "What about you then? Don't like crowds, do you? You're wearing this cool armour suit and you've got a bunch of weapons. Aaaand you're immediately thinking that I'm out to get you. You know what they say about guilty minds." Her eyes scanned him carefully as she talked, seemingly looking for clues on whether she was onto something or not. A few idle taps clicked against the empty glass as her gaze wandered out over the cantina, possibly pondering what his deal could be. Cartel members still lingered, slowly working their way through the crowd. Finally, her gaze returned to him "But that armour, there's something I can't shake."

Hound from the Underground
While she wasn't an immediate threat, Yuri couldn't help but notice her subtle glances at the entrance. From their seat at the booth, he could get a better view of the gangsters that strolled in. Golden eyes darted between her and the gangsters combing the growing crowd. An absent chuckle answered her explanation as he watched the gangsters. Did she have anything to do with them? Were they here for him? Or was it simply one massive coincidence and he was simply being paranoid?

He barely looked back in time to see the admittedly pretty knife she managed to pick up. He was slightly jealous.

"What about you then? Don't like crowds, do you? You're wearing this cool armour suit and you've got a bunch of weapons. Aaaand you're immediately thinking that I'm out to get you. You know what they say about guilty minds."

He chuckled as he nursed his drink. "Tatooine ain't known for its saints." He joked, idly eyeing the thugs on the other side of the cantina. "Crowds are dumb. Plus there's far too many exposed flanks." He went on to explain. One of the thugs locked eyes with the Hound, subtly gripping his blaster tighter. Yuri's hand calmly slid down to War and withdrew the pistol halfway from its holster. A subtle warning that his table wasn't soft. The thug's attention turned back to his group and War slid back into place with an audible click.

"But that armour, there's something I can't shake."

Chops glimmered as a grin adorned his maw, his now-free hand returning to idly tap against the table. "It's Mandalorian armour." He answered freely, the little game was beginning to grow on the Hound. He wanted to see how wild the girl's imagination could get. "So, ya can either think I'm a Mandalorian... or I killed one and took it." He continued with a shrug. He peered past her once again at the gangsters checking the couple the two strangers previously stood next to.

The momentary act of peace and companionship was coming to an end. They were going to find out very quickly if either of them were the target.

While the Shistavanen was subtle, she was not. An amused, albeit slightly confused, brow rose upon spotting his hand carefully slide down to his sidearm. A mischievous grin had just started to form when she noticed what effect his move had on the thugs. She shook her head with an impressed chuckle before crossing her legs and leaning back. The knife rested idly on the table, just a smidge too far away for her to grab without reaching - but the pallie was still slowly being munched at as they talked. Where the Hound could probably make the Cartel members think both once and twice about their safety before approaching, the girl didn't seem to pose much of a threat at all.

The mention of 'Mandalorian' had her face brighten in recognition. "It's beskar" What started as an exclamation was quickly dampened as to not announce it to the rest of the world unnecessarily. She leaned forward, placing the pallie on the table as she looked him over once more. The way her blue eyes traced the contours of his armour and the weapons that weren't hidden might have suggested some sort of technical analysis - but her eyes eventually settled on his. Her gaze lingered for bit before she finally shook her head whilst leaning back again. "Nah, you don't look like someone who'd do that."

Waving an open palm innocently, she let out a lighthearted "Don't get me wrong, you look all tough 'n all - just not the sort to don some murdered Mandalorian's beskar and have a beer in it."

It was clear that she was about to ask another question when the Trandoshan gathered two companions in the distance. Before she uttered another word, her eyes drifted over as the trio approached. She let out a low "I wonder what all this fuzz is about"

"Tsssk. We're looking for a killerrr" The alien's hisses did a good job hiding the rage that simmered underneath. But his eyes did a poor job hiding that he was on the hunt.

The girl leaned back hard against the backrest as if to show that she was compliant. She raised one arm in the air whilst using the other to point at her knife on the table. "Knife's clean 'n I haven't.. uh..." she paused, as if the idea was too foreign to grasp fully "... killed anyone. Ever." She shrugged as if sorry that she was unable to help them any further.

The Trandoshan's reptillian eyes lingered on her - scanning for any signs of deceipt or other reasons for alarm. Finally, his attention turned to the Shistavanen - whom his companion had kept their eyes on throughout. A drawn out hiss preceded his words "Looks like thisss one is armed well enough to warrant a tss-search."

Hound from the Underground
The Hound's eyes narrowed with curiosity as the girl studied him for a good few moments until a chuckle finally broke free at her observation. Something didn't sit right with the girl, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He rolled with it for the moment, the little voice in the back of his mind telling him that this was worth entertaining. "You sound real confident." He quipped, taking a sip of his drink.

The moment was disrupted once again by the thugs. His hand shifted back to War but not much further than that as the group closed in. They were ready for a fight this time. Golden eyes studied the Trandoshan and his friends for a few tense moments, ready to draw if they made a move he didn't like.

"You touch me, you lose the hand, scale-back." He warned with a faint growl in his voice. "Don't know what this is about, but you and your boys should know better." With his hand still on his pistol, he shifted his leg to draw it halfway from its holster. His gaze didn't move from the gangsters for even a moment, a multitude of options and outcomes spinning through his mind at what to do. Between his new companion and the dozens of innocent bystanders around them, the last thing he wanted was a firefight.

Golden eyes narrowed at the group. "So either y'all can leave me an' my friend in peace to finish our drinks... or we can get unpleasant." He warned, the smallest glance spared at his companion to check if she was still okay.

A prime example of an escalatory spiral. The girl seemed to shrink in her seat as the tension between the goon and the presumed Mandalorian grew. Her gaze had shifted all over during the confrontation, scanning faces, postures and weapons and a rapid rate - but for just a moment, all of that stopped and her gaze snapped to him. The Shistavanen had taken her under his wing. A few quick blinks and a fleeting smile were offered - then her eyes returned to what they had been doing before, quickly, maybe even nervously, looking at every little movement the four men were making. Perhaps she had meant to convey gratitude. Or maybe it was just some degree of confused nervousness that he saw. Regardless, it hadn't even been close to anything remotely negative.

Meanwhile, the Trandoshan looked around. It was impossible not to notice the crowds that had gathered in the cantina. The rich swoop racers in the opposite corner and the nervous bartender who's pace had slowed considerably. An aggressive snarl wasn't being held back as hefty scaled hand tightened on his rifle. "Hrrrn, you need to learn when to bend."

The girl's right arm rested by her hip, mostly covered by the poncho while her left hand clutched her right elbow hard. Clearly unconfortable she let out a light "What's a serach gonna find, eh? He's obv-..." The careful sentence was cut short as a single reptillian eye snapped to meet hers.

Another snarl, this time lower and more calculated left him as he glanced to his companions. "Tssssk" before speaking something to the effect of 'not here' in his native Trandoshan tongue. A visciou smile formed, revealing a long row of sharp teeth. He took a step closer and deliberately placed his free arm on the Shistavanen's shoulder, letting the weight of his limb be felt as he squeezed. A petty provocation acompanied by an ominous "Enjoy yourrr drink. Finish it in peace"

If there was nothing more, the Trandoshan and his companions would turn and leave. As soon as they were a few paces away, the girl leaned forward with an urgent expression. "You-... we need to get out. Two pallies says that they'll be waiting outside if we don't hurry." she nodded to the kitchen behind the bar as if to show the way.

Hound from the Underground
A daring grin took hold as the Hound and the lizard glared at each other. His new companion seemed to be getting more nervous with each passing minute, but Yuri remained calm and composed against their looming foe. A scoff escaped at the Trandoshan's warning, an inflammatory remark braced on the tip of his tongue but the girl broke the tension first.

"Go catch some sun, lizard." He quipped, a hand instinctively grabbing hold of the heavily muscled arm as the gangster gripped his shoulder. He had to halt himself from following through on his previous threat, at least for the moment, before the cantina turned into a warzone. What he couldn't halt was the low snarl that ripped from his maw at the thugs. War was ready to fire, the Hound's muscles tightened to move in an instant.

The moment luckily passed and the gangsters moved on. Yuri watched them carefully until they took their leave. His pistol clicked back into its holster and his golden gaze turned to look at the girl. Finally a chuckle broke free and his drink was finished. "Dunno who 'we' is, sis." He remarked as he pulled a cigarette free from a pouch on his belt. "I still got biz here in town. So unless ya need a merc or somethin', I need to find a temp regulator." He rose from his seat and grabbed his personal items before turning to leave, though he paused to face the girl again.

"Ya got a bounty on you or something? You were actin' a little strange there for a second." He asked her, resting a hand on the table as he leaned closer. Something about her didn't line up, civilians weren't normally that calm when threatened. "People usually got more fear comin' off 'em. You don't smell like it." He decided to reveal.

A skeptical brow rose as he pushed back against their temporary alliance. The girl then shook her head whilst opening her backpack, apparently letting whatever thought that had crossed her mind fade. While he talked, she quickly placed the knife and pallie back into her pack, only looking up briefly upon hearing the mention of a temp regulator. At first it would seem as she had no intention of answering him - for once the bag was packed she stood up, threw it over her shoulder and stepped away from the booth. Compared to before, she moved and acted with purpose and determination now, far more similar to how one would expect a thief to move. Before leaving, she glanced over to the Trandoshan who had now moved on to put pressure on another 'hard' table with his goons. There was still a little bit of time to spare.

"Acting strange? I don't wanna die and I don't wear no beskar." Although there was definitely a bit of an edge to her words, she still maintained her soft demeanour, clearly having no intentions of raising her voice to someone as well armed as he was.

The girl leaned in against the table to let her back face the cartel thugs. As she did, it would seem like she might have accidentally allowed the fabric of her poncho stretch in a way that revealed the contours of what might be a small blaster by her belt where her right hand had previously rested during the confrontation.

A shurg was a poor disguise for an impending sense of helplessness as she let out a long sigh. "Look, it doesn't matter if I need a merc. The galaxy doesn't care about what I need, if it did, I wouldn't be stuck on this dustball, now would I? Forget about the 'we', I just-... Just watch yourself, okay? The Cartel doesn't play around and they'll probably remember that we, or maybe just you, stood up to them."

The girl raised a meek hand to offer a little wave before nodding and moving towards the staff room and kitchens with long strides.

Hound from the Underground
Yuri watched the girl pack up and leave her seat, her explanation turning a normal smile into a particularly amused grin. Her act was beginning to falter. To anyone else she would have appeared as a normal, innocent girl simply trying to survive. But for the Hound, it simply seemed to be an act he was all too familiar with.

A faint chuckle escaped as he watched her take her leave. "Take care, sis." He greeted, turning to leave as well. What stopped him was the route she decided to take. With a confidence previously absent, she drifted over to the staff entrance toward the back of the cantina. He watched for a moment until she disappeared before following after her. His helmet was slid on and his vision modes adjusted to track her as he hung back to avoid being spotted. Treasure could wait for the moment. Hell, his armour's regulator could wait. He needed to see what this girl was about.

Thank the Manda that Vara wasn't present. He could already hear her berating him for following after a random girl. He had to suppress the petty urge of alerting the gangsters of the drifter's route. Employees were kept quiet with a generous handful of credits as he slinked through the tight kitchen, carefully watching her through the walls until she left the building. He kept his distance, a mischievous glint in his golden eyes at the spectacle.

There was a growing suspicion of the girl. Gangsters wouldn't be this fired up if something didn't happen and she was quick to take her leave. Either he was being incredibly judgemental, or she was involved with something.

Once outside, Yuri stuck to shadows and alleyways in his pursuit of her. What made things even more odd was the increasing activity of thugs around the area.

Another drink was being poured, making it easy for her light steps to bring her past the barkeep without him noticing. A cook and a nervous Bith musician were inside the staff area. The Bith didn't do more than stare but the man with the meat knife stopped what he was doing to ask what this was about and tell the girl about the area being restricted. Two open palms went up "I'm so sorry for bothering you, Janos said I could leave this way. Some tuba-face was being weird." Even if the cook wanted to stop her, a few moments of hesitation and the girl's quick steps allowed her to get out before anyone would stop her.

At the doorway, however, her pace slowed as she threw a glance outside before exiting. Two cartel members were stationed outside but they were busy chatting with a third man, hooded and mysterious. The girl took a deep breath before leaving, her pace quick but not quite quick enough to draw any attention.

Once away from the cantina, she moved into the narrow alleyways that ran alongside the main streets. Many seemed to have sought refuge there after the cartel started their search for the killer. From an outsider's perspective, this could easily be perceived as her home turf - for she was moving fluidly, even in the thick crowds, and she shared a few nods and glances with people whom she seemed to know. Steadily, she made her way to a downtrodden 'industrial' area for blacksmiths, artesans and crafters. There, she would enter a worn, and seemingly abandoned workshop with little more than a piece of heavy cloth to keep the heat out.

Tracking her could prove to be difficult, however. Not particularly for anything she did actively, but for the sheer amount of people she moved among and the matter of the cartel. While the girl had slipped away just in time, the Trandoshan acted just like how she had predicted. He called his goons outside the doors and asked them to teach the Shistavanen and his human mate a lesson. While it may have been possible for the Mandalorian to beat two thugs, it would be far harder to do so without drawing the attention of more cartel members or alerting the person he was tracking.

Hound from the Underground
The Hound stuck close in his pursuit, though it quickly became evident that keeping up with her would prove difficult from a ground level. Whoever she claimed to be, her movement and comfort with her surroundings simply added to Yuri's suspicion. With the gangsters distracted, he followed the woman through an alleyway and into another street.

This was becoming very problematic. He finally relented and drew his pistol. The moment War cleared its plastoid holster, he fired an ascension cable toward the roofline and launched himself up to pursue her from a more advantageous position. The girl moved like a Strill out of hell, putting up quite a challenge for him to keep up, even with a far less obstructed vantage point. She finally entered a weathered workshop filled with a variety of other customers mulling about, almost losing her pursuer with the sheer crowd gathered around.

What he did notice, however, was the increased activity around the district. The Trandoshan barked orders not too far away, orders that were relayed in record time to everyone else. Whatever this girl did, it had to be related to the particular incident that stirred up all the goons around the city. This was becoming too good to pass up. Yuri moved with precision toward the end of the rooftop, right by the doorway the girl seemed intent on taking. It didn't seem like there were any other options and, more importantly, he spotted the exact component he needed for his armour within the workshop.

From the windows above, he watched her until it was no longer possible. He leapt down, a serrated blade from his vambrace slowing his descent against the thick wall, before settling just past the door. His helmet clipped to his belt and his arm rested against the wall, patiently waiting for the girl to open the door.

A toothy grin would meet her gaze as Yuri straightened out. "Oh hey, fancy bumpin' into you." He spoke up with a layer of amusement. In his free hand rested Peace, trained on the girl with the switch set to stun.
