Private Sand, Static, and the Shape of Secrets

He caught the pillow, shaking his head as he stretched out on the dainty couch, which immediately protested. "For the record," he said, lights dimming, "this is a hostile piece of furniture."

Kael stared at the ceiling, smiling despite himself. The bed creaked as she shifted. The desert pressed in beyond the walls. And somewhere between the kiss she'd taken and the bed she'd claimed, Kael realized this was going to be complicated in all the best ways.

The Next Morning

Morning didn't arrive so much as it crept in, thin and dusty, slipping through the cracked motel blinds in pale stripes. The desert had already started its slow burn, heat rising early, patient and inevitable.

Kael woke before the light fully settled. Not abruptly. Not startled. Just… aware. Years of surviving on instincts had trained his body to rise before danger knocked.

The couch had done him no favors. His neck protested. His back filed a formal complaint.

From the bed, Blair shifted, one arm draped across her face, hair scattered like sunlit threads across the pillow. For a moment, the world felt… still. Quiet in a way that didn't belong to Tatooine.

He glanced at her, a half-smile forming. There was something unspoken hanging between them. The kiss. The closeness. The almost-conversation they hadn't had yet.

He stood, stretching, about to say something—

The sky screamed.

A rocket tore past their window in a violent blur, close enough that the glass rattled like it might shatter from the insult alone.

Kael moved before the explosion hit.

"Down—"

The blast thundered through the street, a concussive удар that shook the walls, rattled the frame, and punched dust from the ceiling. Fire bloomed somewhere just beyond their line of sight, orange light flickering against the blinds like a warning signal.

Kael was already at the window, just off to the side, body angled, eyes scanning.

Smoke. Debris. A building down the street partially collapsed, flames licking upward like they had something to prove.

"Not random," he said immediately. Voice low. Certain.

Behind him, Blair was already moving.

No panic or signs of hesitation.

She dropped beside her bag, unzipping it with sharp precision, fingers digging past datapads and spare gear until she pulled out a compact sat-comm unit. Sleek. Encrypted. Not standard journalist issue.

she activated it, her face lit by the faint glow as she keyed in a rapid sequence. A signal pulsed outward, invisible but intentional.

Ping sent.

Another explosion popped in the distance. Smaller. Controlled like a pattern.

Kael stepped closer, lowering his voice. "You want to tell me why someone just turned this street into a message?"

Now she looked at him.

There it was again. That edge. That careful calculation behind her eyes.

"I don't know who that was," she said. Honest… mostly. "But I know what it means."

"They found something," Blair replied, standing now, gripping the sat-comm a little tighter than she intended. "And now everyone else is going to start looking."

A shout echoed from outside. People running. Speeders igniting. The street was waking up in the worst possible way.

Kael exhaled slowly, tension settling into him like armor snapping into place. "Yeah," he said. "So do I."

He moved to grab his jacket, already shifting into something sharper, colder, more dangerous than the man from last night.

Then, quieter—

"You pinged someone," he added, glancing back at her. "Question is… are they coming to help usor to beat us there?"
