Weight: 106 kilograms / 233 lbs
Force Sensitive: No
Occupation: Republic Military Combat Medic
Affiliation: Galactic Republic
Era: High Republic
Rank: Lieuteant

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Samuel Renfroe is a tall, broad-shouldered human with the weathered appearance of someone who has spent more time outdoors than inside a military barracks. His dark brown hair is kept neatly trimmed, while a carefully maintained mustache frames his square jaw and cleft chin.
Despite his size, Samuel is not heavily muscled. His physique comes from years of practical labor, hiking, hunting, and military conditioning rather than bodybuilding. His hands are long-fingered and surprisingly delicate for a soldier, a trait that has proven invaluable when performing emergency surgery and treating wounds in the field.
His brown eyes are generally warm and expressive, although they can become considerably less friendly when Samuel believes someone is behaving foolishly.
Samuel has a habit of wearing a small medical sigil pendant beneath his uniform. It was given to him by his father and is one of the few possessions he refuses to leave behind, even when regulations would suggest otherwise.
His standard field equipment consists of Republic combat armor modified for medical personnel, a utility belt containing emergency medical supplies, a compact field scanner, bacta patches, surgical instruments, trauma injectors, and several old-fashioned herbal remedies he insists are useful when technology fails.

INVENTORY

  • Republic combat medic armor
  • Republic military-issue field medpac
  • Portable medical scanner
  • Emergency surgical kit
  • Bacta patches and bacta injectors
  • Emergency transfusion equipment
  • Field splints and wound dressings
  • Respirator
  • Compact blaster pistol
  • Vibroknife
  • Personal medical journal
  • Father's medical pendant
  • Collection of dried medicinal herbs
  • Field guide to indigenous plants and natural remedies
  • Personal holorecords and medical references
Samuel's medical kit is notorious among his fellow soldiers for containing items that technically have no place in a modern military medpac.
He insists that "technology is wonderful right up until it stops working."

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Samuel is compassionate, stubborn, humorous, passionate, and occasionally downright cantankerous.
He possesses an almost instinctive need to help people. It doesn't matter whether the patient is a Republic soldier, civilian, alien, politician, spacer, or even someone who was shooting at him five minutes earlier. Once someone is wounded, Samuel considers them his patient.
That attitude has occasionally gotten him into trouble.
Samuel strongly believes that the purpose of a soldier is ultimately to protect life rather than take it. He understands that combat sometimes makes violence unavoidable, but he has little patience for soldiers who become comfortable with killing.
To Samuel, the Republic represents an ideal rather than simply a government.
The Republic is supposed to protect its citizens.
The Jedi are supposed to defend the helpless.
The military exists so ordinary people don't have to become soldiers.
And a medic exists to make sure that even when everything else goes wrong, somebody is still fighting to keep people alive.
Samuel will argue those points with anyone.
Including officers.
He is fond of reminding commanders that rank doesn't make them medically qualified.
"Sir, with all due respect, you're a captain. I'm a medic. You tell me where we're going. I'll tell you whether your idea is going to kill somebody."
Samuel also has a particular affection for what he calls "old-fashioned medicine." He learned about medicinal plants and natural remedies from his family and considers that knowledge complementary to modern bacta treatment and medical technology.
He isn't anti-technology.
He simply doesn't trust it completely.

STRENGTHS

Compassionate

Samuel genuinely cares about the people around him. He will go to considerable lengths to save a wounded soldier, even when doing so places himself in danger.

Exceptional Field Medic

Samuel excels at emergency medicine, trauma care, battlefield surgery, triage, and improvisation. He can operate effectively with limited equipment and under extreme pressure.

Calm Under Fire

Explosions, blaster fire, screaming patients, collapsing structures, and battlefield chaos have little effect on his ability to concentrate once he begins treating a patient.

Improvisation

Samuel has an unusual ability to look at whatever happens to be available and determine how it can be used medically.
A piece of starship plating can become a splint.
A power cable can become a surgical tool.
A ration container can become an improvised sterilization chamber.
His philosophy is simple:
"If it ain't medical equipment, we'll just have to make it medical equipment."

Strong Moral Compass

Samuel has a deeply ingrained belief that every life has value.

Humor

Even in terrible circumstances, Samuel usually has a joke, story, or sarcastic comment ready.
He believes keeping frightened patients calm is almost as important as treating their wounds.

WEAKNESSES

Stubborn

Once Samuel believes something is medically or morally correct, convincing him otherwise can be extremely difficult.

Cantankerous

He has little patience for incompetence, especially when someone's incompetence puts a patient's life at risk.

Superstitious

Samuel maintains a collection of strange old beliefs about luck, death, medicine, and the battlefield.
He knows most of them aren't scientifically valid.
He follows them anyway.

Alcohol

Samuel has struggled with alcohol throughout his adult life. The loss of his father left a particularly deep wound, and periods of intense stress have occasionally pushed him toward old habits.
He has learned to recognize the warning signs, but the temptation never completely disappeared.

Emotionally Guarded

Samuel's cheerful personality hides considerable grief surrounding his father's death. He rarely discusses it seriously and tends to deflect uncomfortable conversations with humor.

Dislikes Being Told to "Stand Down"

If someone is wounded, Samuel's instinct is to go help them.
Military orders occasionally have to compete with that instinct.

AMBITIONS

Samuel has only one true ambition:
Save lives.
He has no desire for political power, wealth, fame, or prestigious assignments.
He would eventually like to train other Republic medics and establish a field medicine program emphasizing improvisation, indigenous medicine, and practical survival skills.
His greatest compliment would be hearing another medic say:
"Doc Renfroe taught me how to bring someone home."

HISTORY

Samuel Renfroe was born on a rural Republic colony where his family had lived for generations.
His family wasn't wealthy.
They didn't have political connections.
They weren't famous Jedi.
They were healers.
Samuel's father, Fred Renfroe, was a civilian physician who served several isolated settlements scattered across the region. His clinic was often the only medical facility for hundreds of kilometers.
From an early age, Samuel accompanied his father on medical calls.
He learned that medicine wasn't always about sophisticated equipment or sterile surgical theaters.
Sometimes it was treating a farmer who had fallen from a repulsor-loader.
Sometimes it was delivering a child during a storm.
Sometimes it was stitching a wound using whatever supplies happened to be available.
And sometimes it meant knowing which plants could stop bleeding when the nearest medical facility was hours away.
Samuel's great-grandfather taught him many of those traditional remedies.
The lessons were simple.
Listen to nature.
Respect what you don't understand.
Never assume you have everything you need.
And never stop trying to save someone.

Those lessons stayed with him.

THE LOSS OF HIS FATHER

Samuel was fifteen when his father died.
Fred had contracted a rare illness while treating patients in an isolated settlement.
There were few modern medical facilities nearby, and by the time Samuel's father could be transported somewhere capable of treating him, the disease had progressed too far.
He died despite the efforts of his colleagues.
Samuel never quite recovered from it.
His father had spent his entire life saving other people.
Yet when Fred himself needed saving, Samuel felt that the galaxy had failed him.
The experience shattered much of the optimism Samuel had possessed as a child.
For several years he withdrew from those around him.
He began drinking heavily.
He became angry.
He stopped believing that people were inherently good.
Eventually, Samuel's family intervened.
Rather than allowing him to continue destroying himself, they pushed him toward the profession his father had left behind.
Samuel reluctantly began training as a civilian emergency responder.
The work changed him.
Every emergency reminded him of why his father had become a doctor in the first place.
People needed someone willing to help.

JOINING THE REPUBLIC

Samuel eventually enlisted in the Republic Defense Coalition Medical Corps.
Military training was difficult.
Samuel wasn't particularly interested in becoming a soldier.
He repeatedly reminded his instructors:
"I'm a medic. I ain't here to become a hero."
His instructors quickly discovered that Samuel possessed exceptional medical instincts.
He graduated near the top of his combat medic training and demonstrated an unusual ability to remain calm when everyone around him was panicking.
He learned battlefield trauma care, emergency surgery, triage, bacta treatment, evacuation procedures, xenobiology, infectious disease management, and survival medicine.
Samuel also became particularly skilled at treating injuries involving unfamiliar alien physiology.
His instructors encouraged him to specialize.
Samuel refused.
His reasoning was simple.
"The battlefield doesn't let you pick your patients."

THE HIGH REPUBLIC

Samuel entered military service during an era in which the Republic was expanding its presence throughout the galaxy.
The High Republic's frontier presented challenges unlike anything Samuel had encountered before.
Worlds lacked modern medical infrastructure.
Settlements could be days away from Republic assistance.
Unfamiliar diseases could appear without warning.
Pirates, raiders, disasters, and conflicts could turn a peaceful colony into a mass-casualty situation within hours.
Samuel thrived in that environment.
He became known among Republic personnel simply as:
"Doc."
Not because he held the highest rank.
Not because he had the most prestigious assignment.
But because whenever someone was hurt, someone would eventually hear:
"Get Doc!"

MEDICAL PHILOSOPHY

Samuel's medical philosophy can be summarized in three rules.

1. Everyone gets treated.

Samuel doesn't care about political affiliation, species, rank, wealth, or military status.
If someone is bleeding, he treats them.

2. Don't panic.

Panic kills people.
Samuel believes a medic's first responsibility is to remain calm.

3. Use what you have.

A Republic medical facility may have advanced surgical equipment.
A frontier settlement may have nothing.
A good medic must be able to work in both environments.
Samuel considers this the greatest lesson his father ever taught him.

REPUTATION

Among the Republic troops who have served with him, Samuel has developed a peculiar reputation.
He's stubborn.
He's loud.
He argues with officers.
He drinks more than he should.
He carries herbs around in his medical kit.
He tells terrible jokes.
He complains constantly.
And if someone is wounded, he will walk through blaster fire to reach them.
His soldiers know that when Samuel Renfroe arrives on the battlefield, someone is going home alive.
Or, as Samuel himself puts it:
"I ain't promising miracles. I'm promising I'll do everything I can."
