PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Manufacturer
: Sibylla Laskaris
Affiliation: Tephrike
Market Status: Closed-Market
Model: Sacred Aegis Against Treacherous Spirits and the Unhallowed Dead
Modularity: No.
Production: Semi-Unique
Material: Durasteel (base is non-alchemised, durasteel around the crystals is), alchemised Force focusing crystals and attuned focusing lense, magic runes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Using enchanted crystals, it creates a preternatural barrier against spirits, Nether entities and such. The barrier can be scaled to shield a building or a town, though one device is insufficient to cover a big city. .
  • Can be powered up via the Force if a crystal is damaged or it needs to be charged up fast. This also allows the use of organic batteries. Mechu-deru can be used to help jumpstart it.
STRENGTHS
  • The device has one job and does it well: summoning a barrier to keep out spirits, demons, Nether beings and such. It can also overcharge and manifest a wave to repel such beings within a limited radius, but this will drain the crystals' energy at a faster pace. The barrier also interferes with attempts to summon spirits, demons and similar entities within the area shielded by it.
  • Can also affect spirits, and Nether beings that have possessed another being or bound themselves to an object. To what extent the device can repel spirits hosted by or bound to beings or objects depends on how firmly they are entrenched.
WEAKNESSES
  • The barrier does not do anything against normal people. That is to say, people from realspace.
  • It also does not stop artillery bombardments, missiles, air strikes, bullets, tanks and such. Overall its use is very situational.
  • Long charge-up period. The barrier does not manifest instantaneously, but needs to power up first. It is possible to shorten the charge-up period but this may risk burning through the crystals if overused.
  • Not portable. The device is quite big and complex to set up. This means it is not easily moved.
  • Force null zones affect it, as the device is alchemised. Then again, the vast majority of spirit beings are also affected by them.
DESCRIPTION

In their bid to subjugate all of Tephrike under the boot of 'glorious mankind', the Disciples of the Vader and the 'Greater Sith Imperium' ruled by them have committed all manners of atrocities. Non-human civilian populations are their primary victims. Entire settlements and cities have been wiped, millions have been deported and murdered in camps. Slaves are worked to death in forced labour camps, plantations and on grandiose construction projects. The bodies of the dead are burnt in crematoria or carelessly dumped into pits of bone. The Vaderites build settlements for 'worthy humans' on top the ruins of alien cities as well as dismantled concentration camps. They call this civilisation.

But the dead do not rest easily. Such barbaric acts have consequences, birthing nexi fuelled by the anger of those who were murdered...and they strike back. Hauntings are a pervasive problem, especially on Chios, whose alien population was subjected to a barbaric genocide. Sentinel's Rest, a town built upon the ruins of a Togruta town and a dismantled death camp, has been hit by a series of...psychic incidents. Human settlers turned catatonic, their faces contorted into expressions of agony; perpepetrators of the genocide committing suicide; settlers suddenly disappearing into the haunted forest, never to be seen again. Because this doesn't fit the narrative, Vaderites are inclined to downplay the problem or brutally lash out. Often by blaming vile xenos sorcery and rounding up the usual suspects for murder.

Sibylla Laskaris, apprentice of the Butcher of Chios, sees things differently. Contemptuous of the intellectual excrement peddled by Vaderite ideologues, she has an inquisitve, pragmatic mind that allows her to think outside the box. She is also completely amoral.

When Sentinel's Rest was menaced by the spirits of the victims of genocide, as well as demons from the Nether, she constructed a called the Sacred Aegis Against Treacherous Spirits and the Unhallowed Dead that would serve as a spirit shield. It would keep the ghosts out so the murderers and their families could rest easily...but also preserve the Bone Forest for study. Dropping preternatural bombs to destroy such a priceless nexus would be wasteful...and incredibly risky. Far better to preserve it for study so that one day the essence of the spirits can be harnessed to power machines.

The first field test of the Sacred Aegis coincided with a battle. Hordes of spirits and Nether demons assailed the Vaderite soldiers and Sith. The initial activation of the machine was disrupted, forcing Sibylla to drain herself to jumpstart. Ultimately the archdemon was slain by her 'partner' Kyriaki, thanks to a convenient lightsabre that seemed to appear in a dark cloud, as if summoned by the Dark Father to aid her in the darkest hour. Almost simultaneously the machine activated, manifesting a barrier that repelled the treacherous spirits. Sibylla had deep suspicions about Kyriaki suddenly being 'blessed'...but her machine had succeeded in its first test. Moreover, Kyriaki helped her approval for further funding from the Supreme Leader.

Use of the Sacred Aegis is very nice. It manifests a spirit shield and that is essentially it. However, the Vaderites' crimes against sentient life and war crimes have resulted in many angry spirits. The device is too complex for it to be suitable for broader production...so many Vaderite settlements built on the bones of the cruelly murdered will have to make do without such protection. Sibylla does not consider this a problem because she regards the vast majority of her fellow Vaderites with contempt.
