OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
Intent
: Codify a bioweapon developed in an rp thread. Similarities to real world events are coincidental, as the thread is two years old. The submission mainly exists for story flavour and will likely only see rare use, if any. It is is up to the individual writer to determine whether their character is infected by it and, if this occurs, how it affects them in terms of symptoms, disease progression etc.
Permissions: N/A.
Primary Source: Scurrier's Disease. Bioweapon. Pandemic.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Name
: Official name is S1337. This is boring, so Enyo's posse likes to call it 'The Coiled Shadowvirus', much to Enyo's annoyance.
Manufacturer: Original Manufacturer is the Galactic Sustainability Trust (NPC). Virus was completed by Archangel Research and Design.
Affiliation: Archangel Research and Design, Closed-Market (select customers).
Modularity: No (mutates of this virus will require their own submissions)
Production: Limited
Material: Virus DNA and RNA.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Classification
: Virus
Method of Consumption: Fluid transmission or droplet and indirect contact.
Average Life: Outside of the body it can exist for up to ninety on surfaces in 10-35C temperatures. Dies rapidly outside those ranges. Has an incubation period of 3-4 days. For the first 2 days it is rare for symptoms to be shown.
Nutritional Value/Allergies/Side Effects/ Purpose:
Purpose:
Stage 1 - Cough and sneezes which helps spread the virus.
Stage 2 - Fever, pains, increased coughing and sneezing.
Stage 3 - Delirium and fever, over-compensation of the immune system leads to damage of lymph nodes and increased weakness.
Stage 4 - Rupturing of lungs can occur leading to bloody coughing, uncontrolled fever can lead to unconsciousness or death even without pneumonia or other breathing complications.
Stage 5 - Death either through complications, uncontrolled fever or spasm.

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Trans-Species Disease.
  • Original disease, which was carried solely by rodents, has been altered to also enable humanoid-to-humanoid transmission.
  • Bacta Resistance
STRENGTHS
  • The virus is highly infectious and has a high lethality. It can be spread through various forms of organic contact.
  • Symptoms do not show for the first two days and the initial symptoms are quite mundane. This means that the infected and those around them may initially dismiss it, with potentially fatal consequences.
  • The disease has been engineered to be incredibly resistant to Bacta.
WEAKNESSES
  • The virus can be aerosol transmitted, but its range in air is limited. Thus avoiding contact with the infected and not touching inanimate objects that have been contaminated with infected bodily fluids is a barrier against infection.
  • Force Healing and its sub-applications can treat the symptoms of the disease and may delay the start of its later stages. The same applies to Kolto-based pharmaceuticals. It is best to use this form of treatment in the early stages; otherwise it produces diminishing returns. Of course, the healer in question will still have to adhere to proper safety proceedings in order to avoid becoming infected themselves.
  • The virus does not survive for extended periods outside of the body. Very high temperatures increase the speed at which the virus dies off in the environment.
DESCRIPTION

Scurrier's Disease is an illness common on Tatooine. It is carried by native rodents. However, it rarely spreads beyond the desert planet. Typically, infected suffer from fever, coughing and aching joints. However, symptoms usually subside in a week. In the case of the immunocompromised or elderly, it can prove to be fatal. A think tank called the Galactic Sustainability Trust saw potential in this disease. The members of the cabal were concerned about what they saw as rampant overpopulation in the big cities of the Galaxy. Driven by an extreme neo-Malthusian ideology, they believed that population growth was exponential, while the growth of food supply and other resources was linear. Ironically, the man they based their theories merely saw population growth as a source of everyday misery, rather than catastrophe. However, the cabal were not economists. Indeed, they had a fairly dismal understanding of economics. At first, the Trust considered creating a virus that would cause sterility, but this was dismissed as not radical enough.

In spite of all the waste generated by various galactic conflicts, ecumenopolises such as Coruscant, Metellos, Fondor and Denon continued to soar in population. The galactic governments were not ready to take the necessary steps to curb population growth. The galaxy had too many people expanding into every niche like a virus. Controls had to be there to deal with the excess. The Gulag Virus had been one such corrective step, but another one was needed. Of course, the best and brightest would have to be protected. They were needed to rule over the common herd. To prevent the creation of new urban 'molochs' such as Coruscant, all knowledge would be safeguarded by the elite, which would rule over the rabble to ensure conversation of resources and responsible government. Although their scientific endeavours and way of life were only made possible by urban civilisation, the members of the Trust were rather hostile to it.

They saw it as responsible for ecological collapse and the diminution of man's connection to the soil. Naturally, a select strata of chosen individuals had to have access to advanced technology. As one of them said, in the old days the mediocre and the riff-raff had been kept at a manageable level through various diseases, but then modern drainage was introduced and medicine was made widely available. Thus people that would have been weeded out by natural selection were allowed to reproduce, taint the gene pool by passing on their genes and consume finite resources. In order to put their plan into action, the cabal used bio-engineering to create a more lethal strain of Scurrier's Disease. They experimented on the homeless, refugees and inhabitants of the urban slums of Coruscant. It worked to their advantage that the former galactic capital kept going through regime changes.

The TSR of the virus was altered, as the scientists inserted sequences into it that changed how it could infect populations. The virus was modified to enable humanoid-to-humanoid transmission. Transmission would occur based on saliva, blood, mucus and droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing, urine, vomit, perspiration as well as other fluids. Moreover, they upped the severity of sneezing and coughing, which helped the disease spread. The disease was a template for a plague that could theoretically affect any humanoid. However, the Trust's work was incomplete, as the virus was still a test run. Their long-term goal was to alter the virus beyond mere fluid transference and into airborne infection.

However, the Trust never got this far, as Patient Zero escaped. This led to a premature outbreak in Lower Coruscant. The fatality rate was estimated to be around thirty percent at this time. Aside from the elderly and weak, most 'healthy' deaths were caused by acute respiratory distress when the body essentially went into overdrive trying to fight the virus and attacked healthy tissue. The incubation period was about three to four days. In several cases, infected who survived still had difficulty breathing for the rest of their lives and were pronr to lung infections. Panic broke out as hospitals found themselves inundated with patients. Moreover, gangs started fighting. Enyo Typhos, head of the Iron Fist Consortium, took an interest as her 'enterprise' operated in this area. With the help of a Sith scientist called
Farah, the Consortium was able to locate patient zero as well as the cabal. Moreover, Enyo kidnapped the leader of the cabal, who had been masquerading as a philantrophist. Farah and Enyo's scientists came up with a cure.

However, while the Cyborg found the Trust's methods crude, she did not get rid of the virus. It could, after all, prove useful. Besides, she could not get sick anyway. Thus she decided to keep and refine the virus rather than destroying it. Enyo's resident scientist
Zakarias Vont oversaw the integration of the Trust's research staff into the Iron Fist Consortium and the completion of the bioweapon. Naturally, Archangel also created a vaccine. After all, Enyo does not want her posse, especially her own siblings, to get sick. Enyo's goals differed from those of the Trust, as she was not interested in using the virus for genocide. Her focus was more surgical. Moreover, the bioweapon was a useful insurance policy. Completing the Trust's work was a matter of balancing three different factors: lethality, symptoms and spread. They placed the focus on the first two factors. The virus was created through science as opposed to sorcery, so using a Force Light on an infected would do nothing except give them a tan.

Work on the virus was a matter of low priority because Enyo could only allocate so many resources while fighting a war against Archangel. This changed after she had assumed control of the megacorp. The finished product has a far shorter survival time outside of the host than envisaged by the virus' original creators. The reason for this is that the virus is already highly infectious and has a high lethality. Thus the short survival time outside of a host actually benefits Enyo in military operations. While many of her troops are droids, she also employs a variety of organics. The shorter duration allows for a more surgical use of the disease. It is a limitation, but also a strategic choice. Enyo called the finished product S1337. Her designs and units used to have cool names, but now they get duller with every creation. Her posse prefers 'the Coiled Shadowvirus'.
