ROOK MERRIEX

THE STORY SO FAR...

Rook Merriex was born on the lush and verdant moon of Rori, a satellite of the beautiful planet Naboo. Her parents, though not of the highest nobility, held a respectable position among the middling nobles of the region. This afforded Rook a comfortable upbringing amidst the wild, vibrant jungles of her home. From a young age, Rook demonstrated an unusual curiosity for tinkering and technology, often seen dismantling and reassembling devices with a keen eye for innovation. Despite this passion, her path seemed predetermined; she was expected to follow in her family's footsteps and attend the prestigious Royal Academy of Naboo, where she would be groomed for a life of nobility and duty.

When Rook was 10 years old, her family made an outing to Theed. It was meant to double as a family holiday and an opportunity to tour the Royal Academy, but fate would have different plans for her. The skies darkened with foreboding, and the air crackled with an unnatural energy. In an event that would be remembered as the Cataclysm, the heavens above Naboo were torn asunder, unleashing chaos upon the land. Demonic creatures flooded the city, sowing panic and destruction. Amidst the chaos, Rook found herself separated from her family, caught in the swirling maelstrom created by a tear in the very fabric of reality. She was swept away, disappearing through the mysterious rift as she desperately attempted to flee the pandemonium.

After being swept through the tear in reality, Rook found herself in a dark and foreboding realm, unlike anything she had ever encountered: the Netherworld. This mysterious plane was a stark contrast to the vibrant jungles and sophisticated society of Rori. Here, the skies were perpetually shrouded in twilight, and the air was thick with an eerie silence that seemed to stretch on forever. The landscape was a labyrinth of shadowy canyons and towering, jagged rocks. Vegetation was sparse, and the few plants that did grow here were twisted and gnarled, their leaves a sickly shade of gray. Strange, luminescent fungi provided the only source of light, casting ghostly glows that illuminated Rook's path in this alien world. Isolated from civilization, Rook relied heavily on her ingenuity and cunning to survive. Her early passion for tinkering became her greatest asset. She scavenged the remnants of the dark plane, piecing together makeshift tools and devices from the debris she found. These creations were rudimentary but essential, enabling her to hunt for food, build shelter, and defend herself against lurking predators that prowled the shadows. Throughout her time in the Netherworld, Rook encountered various creatures, some hostile, others simply curious. Her interaction with these beings taught her valuable lessons about survival and adaptability. She studied their behaviors, learning which ones to avoid and which could be approached cautiously. Her keen observational skills allowed her to understand the rhythms of this inhospitable environment and carve out a semblance of safety within it.

Amidst the shadows and solitude of the Netherworld, Rook discovered she was not alone in her unexpected exile. Her childhood friend, Jayce, had also been swept through the rift. The reunion was bittersweet, offering a glimmer of comfort in an otherwise desolate world. Together, they sought to make sense of their new reality, pooling their skills and knowledge to survive. As they journeyed through the labyrinthine terrain of the dark realm, Rook and Jayce encountered strange phenomena and enigmatic creatures. Their companionship provided solace and strength, yet it also highlighted the differences in their perspectives and desires. While Rook remained driven by the hope of returning to Naboo, Jayce became increasingly entranced by the mysteries of the Netherworld.

Their bond was tested when they stumbled upon a foreboding structure in the distance—a shrouded citadel that seemed to pulse with an unearthly energy. To Rook, it represented another potential threat, a place where danger lurked behind its enticing facade. But for Jayce, the citadel was a siren call, whispering promises of power and knowledge beyond imagination. Rook, guided by caution and her past experiences, warned Jayce against the allure of the citadel. She had learned the hard way that not all that glittered was gold, and she feared the cost of such a pursuit. However, Jayce was undeterred, his curiosity and ambition driving him to explore the secrets hidden within the citadel's walls.

Their disagreement reached an impasse, and with heavy hearts, they parted ways. Jayce ventured toward the citadel, his silhouette gradually swallowed by its shadow, while Rook chose to forge ahead on her own path. Though saddened by their separation, she respected his choice, understanding that each must walk their own journey. The divergence marked a pivotal moment in Rook's tale—a reminder of the complexities of friendship and the divergent paths that life can present. Despite their separation, Rook held onto the hope that one day their paths might cross again, perhaps in the world they once called home.

After 14 grueling years in the dark plane, which translated to 28 years in the material world, Rook finally found a way to return to Theed. In the captial, the Royal Naboo Republic's commencement ceremony was unfolding. It was meant to be a time of celebration and unity, with dozens of planetary representatives pledging their allegiance to the new republic. However, the event was overshadowed by an unexpected resurgence of the perilous portal that had once torn her from her world. During the chaos of the incursion, Rook, with her keen understanding of the rift's nature from her years in the dark plane, identified a thinness in the veil. It was a fleeting opportunity, but one she seized with determination. Pushing through the ephemeral barrier, she emerged back into the world she had been plucked from so long ago.

Rook's return was bittersweet. The world she remembered had changed in ways she could not have imagined. Friends and family had aged or moved on, and she was now a stranger in her own land. Yet, there was no time for sorrow or nostalgia. The rift that had been her prison for so many years was still open, a lingering threat to her home and all she held dear. Rook's survival in the Netherworld had honed her skills and prepared her for this very moment. She understood the workings of the rift better than anyone, and she knew it had to be closed to prevent further incursions. Her return was not just a personal victory; it was the start of a new mission - end the Cataclysm once and for all.
