Nyx system, a few hours out of Nycteria…

There was something very comforting about The Cloudburst I, the low hum of its engines, the gentle rumble of power that coursed through the ship made it feel alive, like a massive and contented beast. To Stephanie, it meant freedom, an opportunity to escape her dreary life of politics, and return to the life she had lived before. In her heart, she was an adventurer, and an explorer. The days of trudging across unfamiliar ground, living by the land along the new frontier were what made her feel alive, which is why she was so excited when she was headhunted for this mission.

Slowly, Stephanie rose off her bed, placing the picture of her sister she’d been looking at carefully back in its frame, and slipped out the door into the ship’s main corridor. She was dressed in regular crew clothes: dark pants and a grey shirt, but around her neck hung her mother’s grey scarf. A memento of days long passed. The lights in the hall had been dimmed, according to the ship’s clock it was nearly midnight. Most of the crew would be asleep, but Stephanie hadn’t been able to get a wink. She crept up to the bridge, the crew didn’t give her a second glace. That’s a bonus of leading the mission. Stephanie approached one of the viewing windows, gazing out of it in wonder. Directly ahead of them was the planet, Nycteria, it was like a dark jewel, perfect, and beautiful. Behind it were the multicoloured ribbons of gas that comprised the planetary nebula that shrouded the Nyx system. Stephanie thought it must be the most beautiful place in the entire galaxy, and she lost a whole hour just gazing at it.

Eventually, she returned to her quarters, and rose at 0400 after a few hours of restless sleep. Today was the day of the expedition, there was much work to be done. Quickly, she moved towards the mess, just getting in before the intercom crackled to life, calling all ground team members and non-permanent crew to report to the mess for briefing.

Outside, the ship hurtled towards Nycteria, towards a horror nobody on board could even comprehend.

Hearken!

Explorers on a mission! And she was there, with her gear in a kit bag and waiting. The day had started off strange. She was not used to being on another ship. Most of her expeditions had been on the Crop Duster with whatever rag tag crew just happened to show up. But this time they were a guest. Her and Dax made their way towards the mess, with their gear in tow.

She ran into Steph and saluted.

"Cap'n Ziegler. Raxis and crew reporting in. How we doing this morning?" She asked, setting down her gear and making for the chow line. Her stomach rumbled from the hangover.

Sanity: Questionable to begin with.

Objective: Support our brave adventurers!

She had not been expressly invited, but she had heard of their voyage. Bards travelled and they heard just about everything. What they didn't hear they picked up from the force. Or rather she did. She was not with them, but in spirit she was.

She leaned back in her wooden rocking chair, tucked safely away on her home world Kaeshena. The Eldorai woman threw a handful of bark into the fire, letting it spatter blue and green sparkles. As it crackled with strange flames she picked up her Violin and played a long slow tune. She hummed and sang along, tapping her foot, feeling the danger of their perilous journey ahead.
"Travellers go to a dead world
A place so vile it'll make ya hurl
Who are these travellers, 'verse please tell
Tolling on disasters bells
Show me through a mothers eyes
What these travellers seek inside
Show me through a mother eyes
What lays in wait 'sides a golden prize."

The images she received from the force floored her. She leaned back in the chair and set down the violin with a steel jaw.

"Feth. These guys are gonna need a lot of help."

The danger was so thick in the force she could feel it. Would she step through the fire, warp space and time as she had done before and tele-port to them?

No.

But the force had it's own ways.

She got a drink, and a plate of meat and vegetables and settled back into her rocking chair, throwing more magical bark into the fire to keep the force link established.

She listened across the stars. When they needed it most, the bard would play. And hopefully save their souls from afar.

Engine Room, aboard the Cloudburst I

The engines hummed with life around Zai. This ship was a thing of beauty, pulsing with life. He had never been on a quality vessel before and was truly appreciating the technical structure and systems. Like any ship though, the engines always needed a little work.

It had taken some time to convince the crew of the Cloudburst to allow him anywhere near the engines. However, when he pointed out several flaws in the power distribution, the head engineer had allowed him free rein. Most ships he had repaired were suffering from years of neglect and damage. The Cloudburst was the opposite. The systems were phenomenal, but untested for long voyages. Without careful monitoring, they would fail before they reached Nycteria.

He had stopped by the hangar earlier, but the small ships were in decent shape, and were unlikely to deterioate if their engines weren't running. He had also tried to snoop around the labs, but the scientists had pushed him out before he could make it two steps.

The hum of the engines was a pleasant sensation that eased him into a calm mood as be worked. He thought he heard a faint melody weaving its way through the ambience, but when he stopped to listen it disappeared. He shrugged but the tune was stuck in his head now, so he whistled as he worked.

This was a pretty nice ship for voyages Kerx thought. The explorers here were friendly and the atmosphere felt as if there were no trouble in the world. But he had to keep to the task at hand of aiding the explorers. He didn't want to get out of focus at the wrong time and let innocent lives perish. He had to keep his guard up, even on the Cloudburst I. But right now he had to eat. He was dressed in his usual getup. His cloak, shoulder guards, and his white mask. He was in the chow line ordering his food. While waiting, Kerx could not help but think about what kind of content the mission would show...

With all these people around, Stephanie was highly aware of how little she looked like a leader. Standing there, shyly, beside these adventurers, she felt completely unworthy. Her hair was a mess, clothes basic and functional, and there were dark rings under her eyes from worry. She wasn't exactly a grand or noble figure. Putting her doubts aside, Stephanie carefully made her way to the front of the small group, trying to make sure nobody saw her limp, and cleared her throat to get everyone's attention.

As Stephanie settled into the rhythm of her briefing her confidence began to return to her, she was used to this, it was just usual pre-mission nerves. "Alright everyone, we're taking the shuttle to the surface in 2 hours, so I want everybody to finish your meal, and go prep your gear. We'll meet with the shuttle crew at 0530, don't be late." Stephanie paused, working through the mission plan in her head. "OK, first, when we land we'll establish contact with the base, and work on getting comms back up, then we'll assist them as needed. Once we have that sorted the shuttle will return and pick us up. However, if our job lasts until after sundown, we'll have to spend the night, as the freezing temperature would make us unable to restart the ship." She shuffled her notes. "Right, lets get moving, I'll meet you in the hangar."

Stephanie spun on her heel and paced out of the room, as fast as her bad leg would let her. She turned left into the corridor and made her way to the armoury. With a sigh of relief she donned her armor, slipping the gauntlets in place and draping the bandolier across her chest over the top of her heavy coat, which concealed a small but powerful heat pack to maintain her core temperature while on Nycteria's frozen wastes. She wrapped her scarf around her neck and walked over to the blaster rack, and hefted her modified WL-29 Sniper Rifle, attaching it to the magnetic strip on her back. She walked over to the full length mirror to admire herself, now this is what an explorer should really look like.

With that done, Stephanie made her way upstairs to the hangar, and began loading the essential supplies for the mission.

When Kerx finally got his grub and sat down with the other people on the mission, he felt a little out of fit. Mostly because he was the only person concealing himself, which may prove untrustworthy to his team. But he just sat there, with the bowl and spoon in his hand and just looked around still when the recruiter came up to brief everyone. Man did she look tired. Kerx stood straight to listen, still keeping silent.

She said that they would get to the surface in 2 hours and to meet with the shuttles at 0530.

Alright, that's plenty of time. Kerx thought.

Then the woman said that they will make contact with the base, and get communications up. The Whispering Death thought that would be the jobs for the technicians and such. Once the briefing was done, Kerx took off his mask to reveal his face but only to eat to food he was given. He kept his head down the whole time as to not draw any attention to himself. After he was finished eating and putting his mask back on, he went back to his room to go and clean his D-18. It had been a while since he repaired the 'ol blaster. He went to his cargo crate which had everything he needed for the mission and then some other stuff. He took out cloth and oil and some parts to begin working on his blaster. He set everything on a fold out table he brought from the cargo crate and began working. Luckily all of the blaster parts were functional, but they were starting to tense up. He got the oil and poured it in every crevice and crack, making sure it would get everywhere. After everything was finished, his D-18 looked brand new and just like the way it was presented to him as a gift so long ago.

Kerx checked the time. Only about 40 minutes of the 2 hours have passed. What could he do until then? He could try to take a look at his robotic hand, but that would take too long. Maybe he would get some rest and wake up with enough time to get to the hangar. Ya, that sounded nice. He was tired and he did not think he got any sleep in the last 2 days on the account of a bounty he was on previously before. So Kerx folded his table back up and gathered everything and put them away is his cargo crate. He took his cloak and shoes off and hopped on his bed. It was a nice bed. Better than anything he slept on in the past decade. He set an alarm to get him up with enough time to gather necessary equipment and get to the hangar 15 minutes early. After a short time, Kerx fell asleep in his bed. He didn't dream, it was just black....

The engineers had asked for his help hauling supplies to the shuttles. [member="Stephanie Ziegler"] had briefed the ground team apparently; they were due to leave in 2 hours. He grabbed a box of first aid kits and a back-up battery. He made his way to the hangar.

Even though launch was still some time away, there was quite a crowd in the hangar. Zai placed the supplies aboard one of the shuttles, then mingled with the rest of the crew. He introduced himself and shared a few jokes with them, trying change the suspicous looks he had been recieving. A few people took interest in him and talked to him while he moved to check the engines.

After scarfing down some egggs, Dax and her scrambled to the bay. She whistled as she entered, holding her kit bag in one hand and her rifle in the other. She was not new to exploration, but as of yet had never seen a ship like this, nor shuttle.

"Well that's nice!"

"Yeah, yeah!"

They boarded, she stored her kitbag behind the seats of the passenger compartment and popped her head through the bulkhead, looking both ways and then grinning. A Human and a Jawa.

"Hey guys, Names Eliza Raxis. Hey you aint gonna let the Jawa fly, are ya?"

Location: Shuttle to Nycteria
Objective: Survive

Stephanie closed the shuttle door with a hiss as Eliza stepped aboard, turning to face the explorer. "Good to see you Ms Raxis, I've heard all about you. Let's let the little guy fly next time shall we?." Without waiting for an answer, she turned to the rest of the passengers. "All right, time's a wasting, let's get going. Stephanie shuffled through the cramped space to the cockpit, slumping into the jump seat, and leaning forward to tell the pilot they were ready. Inside the shuttle the lights dimmed from comfortable a white fluorescence to a dim red glow. The comfortable hum of the ship was replaced by a high pitched whine as the engines gained power. Overhead, the hangar doors slowly opened to reveal the shimmering nebula. The shuttle rose off the floor and smoothly exited the ship, into open space.

She gazed out the small elliptical window in the side of the cockpit, watching the shuttle move along the length of The Cloudburst, gaining speed, she frowned. There was something in the distance. "Oh no. Oh my- EVERYBODY! BRACE NOW! PILOT, GET US OUT OF HERE!

Spinning wildly, the fragmented debris of the Sir Daniel Morgan Space Observatory hurtled towards the ships with incredible speed. WIth horror, Stephanie gasped as she saw a huge section of the station slam into the Cloudburst's midsection. At the same time the sound of hundreds of tiny metal fragments impacting the shuttle assaulted her ears. A sizeable impact sent the shuttle spinning, and Stephanie was thrown around in her chair, opening a gash in her head. Next to her, the pilot lay slumped in his chair, dead. The impact force had sent his head into the instrument panel so hard it had killed him.

Her vision was blurry, when she put her hand to her head it came away covered in blood. Through the window the world was spinning... no... that's not right. The ship was spinning.

Alas her time had come. The Force carried to her the visions of the ship spinning out of control. She felt the desperation, the madness that was coming down the rails. She grinned and then nodded, setting her bow to the violin and playing a tune like this.

https://youtu.be/czkJYLqylzs

The currents of the force rippled and echoed across the verse, enveloping our travellers and their tempest shuttle. Though she could not stop the crash the powers of the verse made the inner workings of the shuttle immune to the gravitational effects of the plunge into the atmosphere. This meant our travellors were able to move freely about the interior.

Hopefully they could wrangle up and save themselves....

An almighty crash resounded through the ship, throwing Zai to his knees. There was a tearing sound and he was thrown back across the hangar. He hit his head against loose cargo and a bright light flashed before his eyes. Crying out in pain, he tried stand up but fell back down. He thought he was unsteady, but quickly realised that it was not him; the ship was spinning erradically through space. Panicked crew members were stumbling this way and that. He heard a few screams and once again tried to stand up. He had trouble but a strange tune played through his head and he managed to steady himself. Convinced he'd knocked something loose in his head during his fall, he shook his head and ran to the engine bay.

If things were bad in the hangar, they were ten times worse near the engines. A few engineers had been working on them and clearly had collided with the engines during the impact. One crew member lay unconscious amist a pile of tools while another clutched his head and whimpered. The head engineer was swearing at the main control panel. Sweat gleamed on his bald head as he desperately tried to manipulate the controls. He saw Zai enter and turned to him.

"The engine controls are offline!" he shouted. "Some sort of system damage. Help me manually shut down the engines before we're pushed into orbit!"

Zai gulped. Emergency shut down of large engines was no easy task. It involved pulling big emergency levers and deploying a coolant through the system to rapidly cool the engines. Zai made his way over to over to the port side engine and started the process of opening the maintenance hatch. The head engineer shouted over to him. "Keep your comms on! We have to sync the shut-down or we might make the spin worse". "Gotcha!" Zai shouted back.

Zai crawled into the maintenance hatch and immediately started sweating. It was swelteringly hot inside. Zai crawled a bit further and located the large lever to shut down the engines. "Ready" he said over comms. The head engineer replied a moment later. "Ok, on one. Three, two, ONE!" Zai pulled with all his strength. Lever came down smoothly, without any hitch. He then immediately grabbed the coolant valve and turned it as fast as he could. There was a loud hising sound as the coolant travelled through the pipes. Zai hopped out of the engine port.

He shouted to the head engineer. "Looks like-" he was cut off by a loud cracking sound as a nearby pipe exploded. The coolant must have cracked one of the more delicate pipes and now the remaining exhaust was streaming through the room. Zai coughed and spluttered. He dropped to all fours and crawled to what he thought was the exit. He almost wept in relief as he passed the threshold and into the hallway. He took a deep breath of clean air and winced at the pain in his lungs and in his head.

When he gathered up enough energy, he prepared himself to go back in to rescue the engineers, who had yet to come out. He approached the entrance when there was a loud alarm and the blast door for the engine room sealed. He recalled it was a safety measure designed for a major leak in the engines. The door would seal to prevent the rest of the ship from being compromised. "NOOOO..." Zai screamed in frustration and hammered on the door. He could see nothing but black smoke through the small window of blast door. He curled up into a ball and wept.

After a short while, he stood and wiped away his tears. The emergency wasn't over, they were still spinning. With the main engines offline, all they had was microthrusters. If they timed it right, they might be able to stop the spin. He rushed towards the direction of the bridge.

B'kik being a small jawa was thrown around the ship when the observatory crashed into the cloudburst, banging his head on the side of the ship B'kik went unconscious. The people around B'kik were to busy running around or heading to the engine room to help him. Was this the end for B'kik, did he just come on this planetary expedition to die above an ice cold planet. One thing is for sure if B'kik survives this his never going on a scientific expedition ever again.
