Description: The Resistance Class Heavy Assault Cruiser is the brainchild of Admiral Wan Min Brightsky who realized that the Rebel Alliance fleet was in desperate need of an all-heavy-gun cruiser during the design period for the new Rebel Star Destroyers. While the Alliance had deployed battlecruisers in the past, they had been designed for distance support roles. This was the first attempt by any Alliance fleet commander to design a ship with the sole purpose of ship-to-ship combat.

When searching the databases for suitable designs, Wan Min focused on older ships that had a proven combat record. In so doing, she came across the design schematics for the Acclamator Class assault ship from the Clone Wars. Although it was extremely antiquated, it was a combat proven design that had seen the Republic fleet through the Clone Wars and was used straight through to the Yuuzhan Vong War by the Imperial Remnant, Pirate Fleets, and many sector defense forces. The Acclamator base design was focused on planetary assaults, but the interior spaces could be changed easily over to any number of roles. As it was an older design and had flexibility in the interior spaces, she decided to use the Acclamator as the base design for the Alliance’s new anti-ship cruiser.

Admiral Brightsky came on the idea of replacing most of the heavy turbolasers with Hypervelocity cannons for anti-ship fire. Although the Acclamator class already had quad turbolasers mounted originally, she decided to expand the firepower to allow it greater flexibility in ship-to-ship fire. As such, the centerpiece of the Resistance Class became the turretted Hypervelocity cannons that would be used for mid and close range fire against enemy capital ships. Moreover, the turreted Hypervelocity cannons would be mounted in an armored barbette, allowing them greater protection from enemy counterfire. A single bow-mounted Hypervelocity Cannon was envisioned to allow for precision anti-ship fire in fleet engagements. While the Resistance Class was not anywhere near a Star Destroyer in size, its firepower alone made it considered a “Pocket Battleship” by Alliance planners.

Lastly, Brightsky and the other Alliance planners wanted to ensure that the ships would not be too advanced to create a problem for the Alliance shipyards. Thus, advanced systems were mostly left out of the final design schematics. Instead, like the other new Alliance designs, Brightsky decided to include analogue back up systems in case of Ion Cannon attack by opposing enemy fleets, as well as retaining manual reloading systems in case the automated systems were knocked out. This necessitated maintaining a larger crew onboard the ship, but ensured that it would be combat effective even in case of large electrical and computer failure.

Please be aware that mass drivers and hypervelocity cannons are not the same weapon. Whereas a Mass Driver counts as a single gun, and a heavy one as 2 for that matter, a Hypervelocity Cannon counts as ten.

Sorry, let me get back in there and edit that out. We were toying with MD's but decided on HVCs.
