STORY SO FAR
There was a time when Renn Corven had nearly everything she now claims she never needed. Born and raised on Corellia, Renn showed an early aptitude for machinery and eventually found reliable work maintaining civilian starships. She was never a famous engineer or celebrated designer. Renn was simply good at her job. She understood engines, worked hard, earned enough credits to build a reasonably comfortable life, and possessed every expectation that tomorrow would resemble today. For a while, that sounded perfect.
Renn entered a serious relationship young, married and became a mother at nineteen. Her daughter, Mara, became the unquestioned center of Renn's life. Old holos from those years show a very different woman: copper hair carefully brushed instead of hurriedly tied away, bright eyes, clean clothes, grease on her cheek from honest work rather than days spent drifting between ports. There were birthday parties. Family dinners. Small arguments about credits. Mornings when Mara followed her mother around with a toy hydrospanner while Renn pretended to require a five-year-old assistant. There was nothing extraordinary about Renn's life.
She would eventually understand how extraordinary that had been. Gambling came first. It began socially. Sabacc after work. Friendly wagers between mechanics. Small bets that made long hyperspace runs more entertaining. Renn enjoyed the uncertainty, the sudden rush of winning, and the absolute conviction that losing only meant the next hand had to be better. Losses accumulated. Renn hid them.
Then came spice. At first it helped with long shifts. Renn could remain awake, focused, and productive beyond reasonable limits. More importantly, though she did not understand why, certain substances dulled the constant background awareness she had always carried around other people.
Renn had unknowingly experienced minor empathic Force sensitivity throughout her life. Disappointment hurt more than it should have. Anger lingered after the person feeling it had left. Anxiety sometimes appeared without explanation. Spice made everything quiet. Alcohol worked too.
The collapse of Renn's life did not occur dramatically enough to provide a single event she could blame. It happened slowly. She borrowed money. She lied about where it went. She missed work. She promised it would never happen again. She stole from people who trusted her. She disappeared for several days. She returned apologizing. She became sober. She relapsed.
Renn loved her daughter through every moment of it. That did not make her a good mother. Mara grew old enough to recognize when Renn was intoxicated. Old enough to understand why her father sometimes refused to let Renn through the door. Old enough to experience birthdays where her mother promised to arrive and did not.
Eventually Renn's marriage ended. She still tried to remain part of Mara's life. Sometimes she even succeeded. Then Renn would relapse again. The final separation was not imposed by a court, criminal syndicate, Sith Lord, Jedi, or uncaring galaxy. Mara asked her mother to stay away. Renn did. It might be the last promise she has consistently kept.
By then Renn's professional reputation had deteriorated almost as thoroughly as her family life. Reliable engineering positions became temporary work. Temporary work became whatever somebody was willing to pay her to do. Renn sold possessions, lost others gambling, and gradually condensed the remains of her life into a shoulder bag.
She now travels primarily by working passage. A freighter needs another pair of hands. A mechanic needs an assistant. A warehouse needs cargo moved. Someone needs a component repaired cheaply enough that they will not ask too many questions about who repaired it. Renn works until the credits disappear, the job ends, or she decides remaining somewhere has become too comfortable. Then she moves again.
Her datapad contains dozens of messages addressed to Mara. Apologies. Birthday wishes. Stories. Statements explaining that Renn is doing better. Admissions that she isn't. None have been sent. Renn does not believe she deserves another chance with her daughter. She is increasingly uncertain whether she deserves another chance at much of anything.
For now, however, Renn Corven remains alive. She still repairs broken things. She still occasionally helps people. She still wakes up each morning in whatever corner of the galaxy happened to tolerate her the night before. Renn does not call that hope. But it might be close enough.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Renn Corven looks tired. Not old, despite what she might occasionally claim, but worn in the particular way of someone who has spent years sleeping wherever a bunk, rented room, cargo hold, or sufficiently comfortable chair happened to become available. At thirty-seven she remains a relatively young woman, though hard living has added lines around her muted green eyes and given her features a weathered quality that was absent from the bright-faced mechanic she once was.
Her most recognizable feature is her naturally copper-orange red hair, carrying warmer auburn tones beneath certain lighting. It falls somewhat beyond her shoulders when loose but is usually dragged into a messy ponytail or rough bun while she works. Loose strands inevitably escape around her face. Renn has fair skin scattered generously with freckles across her nose, cheeks, shoulders, and forearms.
She stands approximately 1.63 meters tall with a lean, wiry build produced more by irregular meals and physical labor than deliberate exercise. Her hands are calloused and frequently marked with engine grease, minor burns, and old cuts.
Renn dresses practically and cheaply. Her usual attire consists of battered utility trousers, worn work boots, a faded shirt in some variation of charcoal, burgundy, or brown, fingerless gloves, and an old spacer's coat that has survived far longer than most of her possessions. Her clothes have been patched rather than replaced enough times that some repairs have repairs of their own.
There are moments, particularly after a decent night's sleep or when she genuinely smiles, when it becomes very easy to see the woman Renn used to be. She generally tries not to notice those.
INVENTORY
- Battered spacer's coat
- Old leather shoulder satchel containing most of her possessions
- Basic mechanic's toolkit and hydrospanner
- Cheap personal datapad
- Several changes of clothing
- Sabacc deck
- Metal flask
- Basic toiletries and whatever medications she can currently afford
- A small collection of old family holos
- Numerous unsent messages addressed to her daughter
- A battered seven-string hallikset which Renn has repeatedly refused to sell
- Old civilian blaster pistol of thoroughly unremarkable manufacture
Renn's exact number of credits varies substantially from day to day and should never be considered a dependable part of her inventory.
PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS
Renn has spent enough years disappointing people that she has largely stopped making promises. She is dryly funny, observant, self-deprecating, and considerably easier to like than she believes she deserves to be. Years spent moving between freighters, workshops, cantinas, cargo depots, and temporary jobs have made her comfortable speaking with almost anyone. She tells good stories, knows an unreasonable number of spacer songs, cheats just enough at cards to make them interesting, and possesses the particular talent of making herself comfortable in places where nobody expected her to stay long.
Renn is rarely cruel. She can, however, be selfish. There is an important distinction. Her worst choices were seldom driven by malice. Gambling, substance abuse, alcohol, dishonesty, theft, disappearing when people needed her, and repeatedly breaking promises developed gradually through years of poor decisions. Renn is painfully aware that understanding why she did those things does not excuse them.
She has become deeply suspicious of the idea of redemption. Too many people gave Renn another chance only for her to waste it. She does not believe that doing something good today somehow erases what she did yesterday, and she has very little interest in grand declarations about becoming a better person. Instead, on her better days, Renn operates by a much smaller philosophy: Don't make tomorrow worse.
She is particularly sympathetic toward frightened, troubled, or directionless younger people, though her sympathy often presents itself as sarcasm. Few things irritate her faster than someone barely into adulthood announcing that they have permanently ruined their life. Renn believes they simply have not had enough life yet to accomplish that properly. She has considerably less patience when applying that logic to herself.
Although Renn does not understand it, she possesses a minor empathic connection to the Force. Strong emotions from nearby people occasionally bleed into her awareness, particularly disappointment, grief, anxiety, and fear. For much of her life she assumed this was simply an uncomfortable degree of intuition. Alcohol and spice made the feelings quieter. That discovery proved disastrous.
STRENGTHS
- Experienced Mechanic: Renn spent much of her adult life around starships and possesses years of practical engineering experience. She is particularly comfortable diagnosing temperamental engines, improvised repairs, and keeping vessels operational long after somebody sensible would have replaced the offending component.
- Spacer's Adaptability: Renn has lived aboard enough freighters, worked enough temporary jobs, and visited enough questionable ports that she adapts quickly to unfamiliar environments. She can load cargo, assist an engineering crew, cook a passable meal, perform basic navigation duties, and generally make herself useful aboard a civilian vessel.
- Good With People: Beneath the cynicism, Renn is perceptive, funny, and surprisingly compassionate. People frequently find themselves telling her things they had not intended to share. Her weak empathic Force sensitivity contributes subtly to this ability even though Renn has never received training in its use.
- Still Here: Renn has survived addiction, poverty, broken relationships, dangerous employers, criminal associates, terrible decisions, and her own impressive capacity for self-sabotage. Whatever else might be said about her, she is extremely difficult to keep down permanently.
WEAKNESSES
- Addiction: Renn's problems with alcohol and spice are not safely buried pieces of her history. She still struggles with both. Periods of sobriety can last weeks or months before stress, opportunity, or simple self-destruction sends her backward again.
- Gambling: Renn understands probability perfectly well when repairing an engine and apparently forgets every principle of mathematics when credits are placed on a table. Gambling has cost her jobs, money, possessions, relationships, and opportunities she could not afford to lose.
- Untrained Force Sensitivity: Renn possesses no formal Force education. Her empathic sensitivity is inconsistent, uncontrolled, and frequently more burden than advantage. Strong emotions can overwhelm or confuse her, and Renn has spent years chemically suppressing sensations she never understood.
- Self-Sabotage: Renn expects people to eventually discover that trusting her was a mistake. When relationships, employment, or circumstances begin improving, she sometimes unconsciously creates the disaster she already expects.
- Ordinary Fighter: Renn knows how to use a civilian blaster and has accumulated enough experience in unpleasant establishments to survive a bar fight. Against professional soldiers, dedicated mercenaries, trained Force users, or genuinely skilled combatants, she is badly outmatched.
- Broken Trust: There are people across the galaxy with legitimate reasons to dislike Renn. Some are former employers. Others loaned her money, trusted her with cargo, believed promises she failed to keep, or cared about her long enough to learn better.
