OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Create a fictional dangerous radioactive nuclide based on Uranium-235 that contains significant amounts of energy but an artificially short half-life so that it doesn't render an area permanently uninhabitable to conform with board rules but also give the League of Sanctified Steel a potent weapon to use in their explosive munitions for which defense against is supposed to be difficult with the potential of nasty secondary effects including acute radiation syndrome from exposure to create drama and tension inside narrative.

STRENGTHS
  • Penetrating power: Regium-270 is an artificially produced radioactive nuclide manufactured for the express purpose of combat without impacting long-term habitability, when amounts of the radioactive nuclide are dispersed into the environment they contain an extreme amount of excess energy which is released rapidly as ionizing gamma radiation in a hauntingly beautiful haze of blue which engulfs the effected area. The sheer amount of energy released in such a short span of time is potentially capable of inflicting extreme amounts of damage on unshielded organic biology, potentially inducing severe symptoms of acute radiation syndrome with only brief lengths of exposure. Mere minutes in a contaminated area can potentially result in fatalities. Not even droids are safe from its' effects and Regium-270 can potentially fry and destroy motherboards and other circuitry that droids rely upon to function properly.
  • Radiation burns: The picometer wavelength of Gamma radiation penetrates clean through all organic physiology and the effect on the skin and organs can potentially be devastating, for those who linger in a contaminated area they can potentially experience third or even forth-degree radiation burns.
  • Short half-life: One of the tactical uses of Regium-270 is as an area-denial weapon with the intention of being discharged into a hostile position as a means of forcing a retreat or abandonment of the position, its' short half-life serves to this purpose forcing a hostile to displace which allows the force utilizing Regium-270 based munitions to then quickly occupy the position shortly afterwards.
WEAKNESSES
  • Dense materials: Metals and ceramics that are particularly dense such as lead, osmium, platinum or neuterium and approximately one to two millimeters thick can adequately shield organics and circuitry from the gamma radiation emitted by the rapidly decaying Regium-270. Making it possible for armored vehicles and some types of protective armor to permit the safe operation inside an area contaminated by Regium-270.
  • Dispersal: It's entirely possible that in the right conditions that the effectiveness of Regium-270 can be reduced somewhat, rain can ground airborne nuclide particles and wind can disperse them over a greater surface area, which could be desirable or undesirable depending on the environment. It's also worth noting that the use of Regium as a munition in void warfare is largely ineffective on its' own unless used within the context of a boarding action.
  • Indiscriminate: Regium-270 does not discriminate between its' victims, those who use such a dangerous munition as part of their arsenal can just as easily fall victim to acute radiation syndrome if they're careless in its' use or their own movements which could see them end up contaminating themselves.
DESCRIPTION
Regium-270 wasn't originally developed by the League of Sanctified Steel, its' origins are found in the time just prior to the galaxy's plunge into darkness with the Gulag Plague. It was rediscovered in the ruins of an authoritarian regime who had been at war with a neighboring sector from the historical databases the League managed to recover. Realising the horror Regium-270 could pose to life as a means of inflicting large amounts of indiscriminate casualties on another, the League's leadership thought it prudent to seize the remaining stock and destroyed all materials referencing it in their wake. The Order of Artisans set about reverse-engineering the radioactive nuclide in 490 ABY and succeeded around 515 ABY. The controversial decision to reverse-engineer the Regium was swiftly followed by the decision to place such a volatile and toxic material into production, since then the League has stockpiled supplies of Regium-270 munitions though as of 858 ABY never once used them in anger.

As a radioactive nuclide that decays artificially quickly and id designed for war Regium-270 sheds its' excess and bond energy as Gamma radiation which is visible in any medium as blueish Cherenkov radiation which denotes the presence of a charged particle moving through aforementioned medium. Regium's half-life is only a staggering fifteen minutes and rapidly decays into a significantly less toxic and dangerous material material called Thorium. Regium's primary effectiveness as a weapon is derived from its' gamma radioactive properties, gamma radiation's wavelength is equal or lower than one picometer meaning particles possessing this amount of energy can pass through all but the most dense materials and ionize the atomic structure of organic material and even circuits. Unlike biological and chemical weapons, droids are not immune to the effects of radiation making Regium-270 an attractive candidate when a commander is faced with an inorganic force who possess little moral or ethical value. Regium gamma waves destroy motherboards and processors which are crucial for droid function.

Against organics the side effects from exposure can vary wildly from dose received with a potential for unconsciousness and death at the extreme end of one potential outcome to a headache, fatigue and weakness at the other. Radiation burns are also another possible outcome for those who are exposed to gamma ionizing radiation emitted from Regium-270 which also varies according to dosage from superficial 1st degree to bone-deep 4th degree, treatment for acute radiation syndrome brought on by Regium-270 can include bacta-tank submersion, blood transfusions, antibiotics, stem cell transplant, biological prosthetic and cybernetics where appropriate. In terms of environmental factors that can reduce the effectiveness of Regium-270, high wind speed can disperse the charged particles over a greater area, potentially contaminating greater area with less energy per square meter or rain which forces particles into the soil but prevent them going airborne and being potentially directly ingested through the respiratory system.
