The Air taxi ride was a plummet into the neon abyss which was the Corellian Sector. As the vehicle descends from the upper spires, Brendan felt a spike being driven into his left temple, a rhythmic and agonizing pulse of his critical past injury. He leans his head back, his eyes squeezed shut against the frantic strobing of a billion advertisements.
The vehicle hisses to a halt at a rusted landing platform, two blocks north from the Meltdown Cafe.
Brendan steps off the vehicle, his usual mechanical gait setting back in as he glides forwards towards the alley where Harlan was last seen.
His eyes sweep what surrounds him, permacrete walls and the entrance to the Cafe.
Brendan tries his best not to look like a hunter. He pulls his armorweave gloves up his wrist as he reaches the shady alley, noticing a white scoring mark on the floor. Brendan crouches down and kneels beside it to investigate. It appears that something had scraped the floor, something with a rectangular frame..
It's the stretcher. But why?..
Brendan looks up immediately, mildly confused.. 15 metres ahead, he spots the same stretcher ditched near a weathered, cylindrical trash can.
After connecting what little dots he has, Brendan's jaw dropped for a third of a moment. His eyes turn vigilant.
Brendan observes.
There's a Rodian on the side of the catwalk behind a cargo container, clumsily peeking out with it's heavy, decorated hunting rifle. Before it's multifaceted eyes lock onto the rifle, Brendan already knows it's going for the head immediately..
Brendan utilizes the advantage of his currently crouched position to execute a practiced Stava technique, the "Tactical tumble", a low-profile roll executed best when one is close down to the ground.
As the rifle kicks against the Rodian's body, Brendan is already scrambling for his blaster pistol behind the safety of some YT-series Engines manifold.
Brendan pivots himself and moves his head just enough within the safety of cover, immediately firing a single shot with the precision his RK-3 provides him, the shot hits a pipe carrying industrial waste and many other things, a disgusting sludge inside.
The grey sludge in the pipe splashes out violently, getting cooked to a hot temperature by the temperature of the blaster shot, tearing into the Rodian's skin.
The Rodian lets out an agonizing scream, dropping the heavy hunting rifle on the ground before falling down on its back.
The constant violent splashing creates a temporary hazard, buying Brendan enough time to consolidate into the base of a metal stairs nearby, proceeding to climb it to reach higher ground or a potential exit through the room that has seemingly been left open.
As soon as Brendan finishes ascending to the top of the stairs, a barrel-chested purple coloured Houk storms forward from inside the room and slugs him across the jaw with it's massive fist, this sends Brendan stumbling back onto the railing.
However, the Houk hurts it's own self by overshooting the punch and slamming it's own right fist onto the unyielding durasteel of the jamb, letting out a subtle scream.
The pain of the vertigo spike amplified by atleast 10 times. Brendan, leaning back on the railing, tries to fire his RK-3 once between the Houk's eyes, but the shot awkwardly goes very wide and the blaster slips out of his hand, falling down the metal stairs.
"..."
Brendan aggressively puts more weight on the railing with an almost feral growl, leaning his torso back almost parallel to the ground, bringing his left knee a little bit upto the Houk's chest level, partially extending it as a linear low kick with fake effort. A feint.
The Houk fights purely on instinct, unlike Brendan, it lacks any formal training. So, it immediately uses its good left arm to try and seize Brendan's leg, bringing it up to the meat of his calf slowly. The Houk is doing what Brendan has anticipated it to do.
As soon as Brendan spots the movement through the curling of the Houk's big biceps and the anterior deltoid shoulder movement, he immediately snaps his left leg back, out of seizing range. Before the Houk catches up, he whips his leg outward, executing an identical kick to the question mark kick but in a more springboard manner, using the railing. The target was the side of the Houk's jowls.
The Houk was extremely enraged, it wanted to absolutely tear this man apart. One more hit, and he is out of commission or in a near-dead state. Even Brendan himself knew it.
Brendan's other leg, his right leg, was already coiled like a spring.
The barrel-chested Houk grits it's teeth, immediately seizing Brendan's collar with it's injured arm with unbelievable strength even for a Houk, despite it's injured conditions.
It easily curls him up with a single injured arm, with a forceful yank to break his grip on the railing.
Brendan saw nothing but the Houk's face, and then it's arm gripping at the collar of his Duster, and the environment which seems to spin.
Brendan snaps his coiled right leg while hanging off the floor at the Houk's chest level. His shin manages to impact the Houk's groin with a sickening thud. The Houk had no significant protection, it was just wearing a tough cape and loincloth.
The Houk's expression only got angrier. It's grip only tightened in a dying spasm. However, it's legs were already buckling.
Brendan immediately tightened his grasp on the Houk's right forearm which was gripping his collar, pulling his face closer to the soft, inner wrist of the Houk's body.
Krr-unch!
Brendan's teeth dig into the soft part of the Houk's forearm, it's grip letting go as Brendan lands on the floor.
Brendan immediately generates torque with his hips, pivoting his body and throwing his entire weight, a little bit clumsily, onto a low kick with his left leg, targeted to the side of the Houk's lead knee.
The top-heavy Houk's base gives out, as it falls on its knees. It wasn't out of the fight. It was just stunned.
There. Brendan's RK-3 was on the base of the metal stairs...
Along that, there was also a thug holding a scattergun, his weapon already trained on Brendan.
Brendan prepares himself to sprint, but he has to squeeze through the Houk's massive frame to get to the other end of the room.
clack-THUMP! The scattergun fired out a conical spread, Brendan was unable to evade it, several shots seared onto his torso and grazed his neck while he was trying to squeeze through the gap.
The Armorweave managed to dissipate the energy, but the pain of a the shots partially tearing into his skin, combined with his amplified Vertigo was unbearable. The Houk was shot dead. Multiple pellets tearing through it's eye, torso and arms. It was a big target.
Brendan pants, leaning back into the permacrete wall of the room.
The heavy footsteps of the Black Sun thug followed. He was running as fast as he humanely could.
"..EY! GORB'S DEAD! I'M GONNA SAVE THIS KARKIN' SCUM FOR MYSELF! STAY TH--"
The flash-toned tan colour of synthspray completely engulfs the thug's face and eyes.
"YEAARRGGHHH!!!"
The thug screams after he was blinded with the Synthspray before he could glance at Brendan's face.
The thug tries to hold the railing but falls down the stairs clumsily.
"NOO! HE'S MAKIN' A KARKIN' BREAK FOR IT!"
Brendan scrambled through his medpac, yanking out Bacta, injecting himself immediately. His vertigo calms down, not entirely, but it was bearable.
Brendan kicks off from a stack of rusted power coupling crates from the balcony of the room, grabbing the edge of a neon commercial shop sign. Brendan generates momentum by swinging his feet, letting go and leaping onto a thick coolant pipe which runs parallel to the wall. Brendan climbs down the length of the pipe, and jumps down onto a parked airspeeder.
The repulsorlift hisses as it absorbs Brendan's weight before proceeding to roll forward without missing a beat. None of the thugs had seen Brendan's face.
The Black Sun Cell now know an Agent has been sent to retrieve Harlan.
