Plants and Alchemy [We are going to mix what?!]

Unknown Regions
A laboratorium
Fringe Space
[member="Valik"]

Today [member="Rave Merrill"] stood before my bed, and told me to get up. It was of the utmost importance that I’d get ready for a journey, to travel to a secret base slash laboratorium. She wished for me to get apprenticed by a known acquaintance, I didn’t know his name, but she said I’d recognize him the moment I saw his face.

I assume it has to do with my latent memories, her memories. Maybe this future teacher of mine had a history with my progenitor, I wasn’t sure. But in my short life there was one constant, trust Rave. In the end she knows what’s best, and everything would turn out fine if I follow her directions.

My transport brought me to a secluded location somewhere in the Unknown Regions, I wasn’t sure exactly where it was. I think that was the whole point, I wasn’t supposed to know this place. It made me consider the risk Rave was taking, by making me study under this persona X.

Maybe it gave me a warm feeling, that someone cared. A foolish notion, of course. She only cared about my potential, not so much the person I am. But sometimes girls need a foolish notion, to keep them sleep easy at night. I stepped outside of the transport, and looked around.

It was some sort of derelict space station, in orbit over a planet I had never seen before. Such was life in the Unknown Regions, it wasn’t called that just because it sounds nice.

There wasn’t any time to linger, my escort did what it was supposed to do. Escort me inside, and then stand guard beside the door of the laboratorium. I had a funny feeling those men weren’t Rave’s. Seems she had been talking to Ovmar, I wonder why he had allowed this.

But before I could put much more thought into question, my attention was grabbed by the variety of apparati in the lab. All the colors and hues, it made me wonder and.. well maybe I giggled a little. Don’t judge me.

That’s how the Alchemist would find me, I am guessing. Giggling like a little girl, best first appearance ever.

Valik

Professor of Alchemy
Valik had gotten a message from Rave Merrill saying that she had someone she wanted him to meet, to train even. Valik in truth was not one to train, having trained few in his time, fewer still in his true trade, but he did owe Rave for putting him in contact with the pair of female HRD's. So he figured he'd at least give this apprentice a chance, and even if the apprentice didn't turn out to have huge potential that didn't he or she couldn't be used as an effective tool to further his goals. In any case the apprentice was due to arrive in just a few hours, causing Valik to hustle and bustle to move things around in his lab, put away the more sensitive experiments along with the ones he didn't quite want Rave to hear about while disabling security measures, testing cameras, and most important of all arranging a good viewpoint.

In Valik's first days in the Sith Empire he was little more than a scientist or an alchemist, but as his talents in alchemy grew, so did his comprehension of biology, specifically his own. Through a talent called Sith Mask he was able to manipulate his own cells at a molecular level. In the past it was used by Palpatine to hide the effects of the corruption of the darkside, in the present it was used by Valik to appear however he wished, within reason. He couldn't grow taller or become more muscular but he could his change his face to whatever suited the occasion, evens to liken himself to near-human species such as the Chiss or the Zeltron. Today however he chose not to assume such an exotic appearance, instead laying himself on a table and becoming a sickly grey while using his recently learned Art of the Small to minimize his Force signature beyond detection. Next to all of the other tables filled with ghastly white and unmoving bodies he would have appeared to be just as they, a simple cadaver waiting for examination. With precious little time remaining before the apprentice arrived Valik closed his eyes and put his mind on alert, waiting and feeling for another presence to enter his domain.

When the apprentice came it was a bit strange truth be told. Valik was not particularly skilled in sensory aspects, even when focusing his mind on nothing else as he did now, but he couldn't help feel that the apprentice was familiar in some way, as if he'd met them before. Still, it was not important enough for him to reveal himself. She would find him or not, as this was the first test of many from Valik. What did you do when forced to seek out an unknown persona, while in an unfamiliar location?

Apparently it seemed, one giggled. It seemed he had a lot of work ahead of him. Reaching out he traced the faint signal of her life and then clenched his fist, squeezing an imaginary vicegrip around her neck. Valik was not Vader, so he couldn't choke a man to death across the vastness of space but that was not his intent. All he wished to do was silence her, a task that should have been within his power. Discarding the blanket above him Valik's skinny corpse-like body would be in her full view, or nearly full view as he did keep a little clothing on, Valik not being so interested in his disguise to abandon all sense of modesty.

"You are in a new environment seeking a man you've not met before and the first thing you do is give away your position. As a scientist or alchemist without moral inhibitions on one's creations that will get you killed." He said, before he finally got a good look at the young woman before him. He had met the woman before, once or twice, but more often seen of her in Fringe reports. Circe Savann, if memory served correctly, a middling scientist with a penchant for being a thorn in the Fringe's backside. Still, the woman he'd read of was a business woman, a seductress, a scientist. Not a girl who almost seemed to giggle of innocence. Something was wrong here, and Valik didn't have all of the facts.

"You will explain to me your relation with Rave Merrill." He said in a tone that didn't need to reinforce itself by imposing deadlines before he stretched his fingers outwards, releasing his hold on the girl and giving her chance to breath, and speak to answer his questions.

My throat suddenly contracted, the giggling stopped short as my lungs desperately were trying to get some air in them. Then my eyes landed on the corpse who seemed to be not as corpsey as it looked, I would have screamed right there and then if it wasn’t for that hold on my neck.

Then it started speaking, most people would faint by then. But I ain’t some kid stuck in a horror-movie. My brains started working real fast by then, and I realized a couple of things.

One, it was teaching me a lesson. Well that’s a lie, that was my second thought. My first thought was, hey it isn’t trying to cut my throat. That gave me enough pause to actually listen to its words.

Boy, if I had enough oxygen, I’d probably be blushing right now.

Eventually my.. Teacher released his grip over me, and I couldn’t help but cough. Just three or four times, I didn’t want to keep the Infamous Alchemist of Chaos waiting too long. Probably wouldn’t be too good for my speaking faculties.

“Rave Merrill is my creator.”

I said simply, without adding any fluff or anything else. For some reason I had the feeling this man would bring a world of pain over me, if I didn’t do exactly what he said as he said.

Valik

Professor of Alchemy
The girl, as Valik doubted she had enough life experience to be considered a woman, was quick in her response, not bothering to toy with her words or add unnecessary fluff. My creator was her answer. Normally that meant a clone, although Valik knew Rave likely had other methods of creation. Still, a clone, perhaps with a bit of alteration here or there, was the most likely solution. Which meant the girl was a plant, and likely a hated one at that. Which meant Valik would have to develop non-standard countermeasures in the case of a betrayal. More interesting than an inconvenience in truth, as researching new subjects was a fun hobby. Then again, she was still a clone all the same. Clone Madness would be a very real threat in the future.

"That's better than most can say I suppose." He replied, not bothering to mention whether he meant the girl's relation with Rave or her origins. "I suppose if you are Rave's creation there's only one reason you're here." He said. He could actually think of two reasons to send a rare alien to Valik, but her making this girl made the desire for a cross analysis or autopsy unlikely. "And that is to follow in her footsteps as a crafter, though there is more to it than simply building things." He said, before using the Force to pull what appeared to be a death stick and a lighter to either hand, before putting it to his mouth and lighting it, allowing the subtle release of pheromones to permeate through the air.

"I am a master in three trades, science, engineering, and alchemy. The three are connected, influencing and building off each other like the body, heart and mind. Science is the study of the universe around us. How does the universe work? Why does it work the way it does? What is blood, and why do most species need it? What is this material, what does it do when put under a physical force, or an electical force, or superheated? What is hyperspace, and why can't it go through a planet? Simple questions, simple answers, usually found through mere observation and isolating what properties you're testing. But on it's own that's all science is. Observations. Sometimes fascinating, sometimes stimulating, but always useless alone." He said, lotus stick still smoking at the edge of his mouth.

"Which is where Engineering comes into play. If science is to observation than engineering is to application. Using the knowledge one possesses about his resources what can he do when he puts them together? If this metal and this metal are melted together can they reinforce one another to become stronger then they would alone? If I put some gas in a container, superheat it and then send it through a nozzle can I destroy an obstacle in front of me? What can I change about the storage and delivery system to make the plasma more powerful, or more efficient? How can I use what nature has provided to accomplish a task while using the lowest effort and resources that I can muster? That is Engineering, and with it we can travel the stars, strengthen armies, poison worlds, even create inorganic life, but sadly engineering has it's limits. We are still bound to the laws of science. No matter how much we manipulate a metal it is still a metal, and will still only withstand so much force before crumbling."

"But some of us are blessed with the Force. With it, through the process of Alchemy we impose our will on nature, reshaping it and bending it to our will." He said, before focusing into the edges of his fingers, a slight darkness that the plant might pick up if she was especially observant. "Allowing us to make things stronger than they should be." He said, before scraping his nails against a durasteel wall, making clean cuts effortlessly as if he had millimeter long lightsabers at the edge of each finger. "Pheromones can only be used by Zeltron and the Falleen, but what if they could be harvested and be made into a serum, aiding with interrogation or espionage? What I could a man do if he could his own biology in an instant?" He said, first subtly referencing his 'deathstick' test before changing his appearance infront of Cerita's own eyes, losing the ghastly palour of death as the color of his skin changed into that of a tanned, healthy man. "With enough power and practice nothing that universe says is true or untrue matter anymore, because if you want to you can simply make it so. The power of Alchemy is unlike any other, feared and respected for good reason. Which is why if you learn it you'll need to conduct yourself as well. If a rival alchemist." He said before laughing a bit. "Should anyone ever deserve the title, came in here giving their position away before knowing what dangers might lurk around them I'd have killed them before they saw me coming." He said, stating a fact, or at least what the paranoid scientist considered to be a fact. After all, what little jedi or assassin wouldn't want the most talented and intelligent alchemist in history dead?

"So, little child of Merrill. What danger do you see?" He said as he held his lotus stick, before breathing out a ring of pheromone-filled smoke.

As the corpse spoke I listened intently. I think it was that moment when I first felt a soaring feeling in my stomach. ‘Course I didn’t know what it meant back then, but it was a desire. It was a craving want for knowledge, the more he spoke the more I was compelled to believe that this was my true calling.

It had nothing to do with his sticks, though at that point in time I didn’t even realize what they were. A true vinithi was immune to the pheromones of mammals, which his sticks were derived of. I didn’t know that either. Truth to be told, I knew very little about what it meant to be.. well me.

Looking back at it now, it’s pretty embarrassing. But how was I supposed to know? I think Merrill tried to protect me against the temptations which came with the inherent abilities I had. She didn’t want me to follow her footsteps, influencing people’s minds to accomplish my own means.

Think she wanted me to be ready for the responsibility first. Kinda like what Valik was trying to explain right now.

Science, Engineering and Alchemy, were studies with power.

“And with power comes great responsibility.”

Or so I am told.

When his nails blackened themselves and he started scratching up durasteel as if it was paper, I think my eyes widened themselves just a tinsy bit. Which was just a token expression, because when his skin and body warped itself into the facade of a healthy person. Well.. that was sure something. Think I even gasped a little.

Then he threatened me. Or at least, it felt like a threat from my perspective. Because didn’t I just do that? Walk into a room, trusting that Rave’s connection would protect me from everything?

I had been naive, and that stung.

Still, the man asked me a question and I found it within myself to answer.

“The danger would lie in training a stupid little girl, who could get herself killed through her naievety. Because how can you be sure she will improve, and not get captured. She might be tortured and forced to divulge sensitive intel.”

I think that at that point my voice was devoid of any emotion. This man could kill me in a heartbeat, he just had to blacken his nails again and then shred my throat. That ain’t a thing I was looking forward to.

“I can only give you my word that I will work hard and improve to become a worthy student.”

At that point I bowed deeply, as I spoke the last words.

Valik

Professor of Alchemy
Though the girl didn't answer Valik's true question, she was in fact correct. Training this girl was a danger to Valik. He wasn't sure if she'd be able to keep her head on a swivel, protect her secrets and his. Worst yet, what if her training was a success? What if became a skilled alchemist with knowledge of Valik's tendencies, his abilities? Knowledge of a master's skills naturally played into the advantage of a would-be apprentice assassin. Shortly after his analysis of her words she spoke again, giving promises to 'work hard' and 'improve' to 'become' a worthy student. What a foolish concept.

"You are a worthy student or you are not. Hard work and effort are essential, but you will be proven a worthy student by your results, or not at all. Furthermore . . . " He said before swiftly bringing his foot to the planteous girl's face. If she was alert, feeling him in the Force in some fashion or another she'd likely be able to evade as Valik wasn't a particularly strong man, nor enhancing his strikes with the Force, but otherwise she'd likely be in quite some pain in her jaw, perhaps a bleeding or broken nose depending on where his strike landed.

"What I was asking for was the danger to you, and to you I am the most dangerous thing in this room. Not knowing where I am, what I'm doing, is a recipe for disaster." He said, his tone firm, harsh, but of teaching. Though Cerita likely didn't feel so, nor would understand for a while, Valik held no hatred or ill will for the Vinithi. Rave had asked him to teach the woman, and he would, in the best way he knew how. Cold, emotionless, and unforgiving, like the universe she inhabited. One way or another he'd made this girl strong, but no strength was ever given through coddling.

I am not a prodigy of the Force or something silly like that, but I had some training. Valik already had made me more cautious than I usually was, I didn’t get more than a split-second trying to lean away from the kick. It hit me in the shoulder, and it took me some strength not to spin around.

Didn’t wait for another kick, instead I sent one of my own right into.. well. You know his eh.. instrument. Don’t judge me, I am not the strongest gal around, but a kick in the balls will floor anyone.

I ain’t proud of what I tried to do, but like he said. He was the most dangerous entity in this room, and well.. I ain’t letting a guy kick me in the head. It was a shoulder, but you catch my drift. It hurt!

Valik

Professor of Alchemy
Valik was not sure how the woman leaned away from the kick and he hit something closer to her center of gravity, but wasn't complaining. She'd avoided a kick to the face. Even retaliated, though the kick was quickly stifled by a telekinetic push shoving her foot downwards. Valik could not help but smile. She was learning. Perhaps this apprentice wasn't as naive as he'd first thought.

"Excellent." He praised, his first encouraging words since they'd met. Something she'd soon learn was a rarity. "Your making progress towards your survival." He said, reinforcing his teachings of awareness and self protection.

"Now, we shall begin making progress towards your traditional education." He said, before walking around the lab and finding a syringe, then tossing it at the plantous woman. "Take a blood sample."

I blinked.

Just like that the ‘fight’ was over, even the fact that I had seen it as a legitimate fight made me feel embarrassed. Then again, he did praise me for being slightly quick on my feet at that moment, so maybe I wasn’t an entirely lost cause in his eyes, which was already an improvement from barely a minute ago. Didn’t want to ruin his newly forming positive image of me by wussing out at such a simple task, even though it made my skin crawl. Don’t look at me that way, I just don’t like needles all that much that’s all.

In spirit of showing the man that I wasn’t a total flower I quickly grabbed for the syringe with my left hand. It hit my palm and continued to fall, with a quick recovery I was able to catch it with my right hand. Didn’t look to see if [member="Valik"] had seen my failure, if my face had been able to get a blush… now was probably the time.

With a grunt I sat down on a nearby chair, and pulled up my sleeve and started examining my arm for a vein. Truth to be told, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Wasn’t going to tell him that though, I had made enough of a fool of myself already. Finally I found a vein which seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, I looked at it for a while… trying to find a good angle to hit it.

Eventually, I sighed and looked back at him.

“I have never done this before, can you please help? Before I do something stupid again and bleed out.”
