Many people fell to the crimson blade of Magnus 'the Red' Zambrano; King of Panatha in his bloody crusade but none had it harder than the Fanalis. In the newly crowned Magnus's continuing campaign he wiped the Fanalis off Panatha and began his crusade across the Pacanth Reach one by one conquering Bunduki, Fornow, Sorimow and at last Ravaath. Ravaath was the last bastion of the Fanalis people in the Pacanth Reach. All those who fought were slaughtered and those who surrendered were worked to death by the conquering Epicanthix at the behest of their King. They thought they would be able to dig into their homes and make use of the natural caverns that ran beneath the surface should the invaders ever come for them.
They were wrong.
Magnus the Red himself led the legions of Panatha to Ravaath and the first into battle. But this battle wouldn't be like any other. This was a crowning achievement for Magnus and the Epicanthix people finally driving the "Fanalis Menace" from their worlds. They would unite as one people not the fractured city states they were at one time, but one people, one Empire. So Magnus the Red declared there would be no slaves taken among the surrendering Fanalis, they would be annihilated. When the Epicanthix came they brought fire and death across the landscape years of fighting and losing to the warrior people they were worn down and their homes ill equipped to withstand their brutal assault.
King Magnus's legions washed over their homes slaughtering the warriors and decimating all in their path. It soon became clear that hope was lost and so all of the innocent the young, the old, were sent into the caverns to hide while the warriors would fight to the death and hopefully allow them to weather the storm. So these peoples hid for days after the battles end and the last of their warriors killed, utterly terrified of the Epicanthix who hunted them. Their fear amidst tears flowed freely through the caverns during this time as hope slowly died. It seemed like they might've had a chance to escape the slaughter, to escape and flee the Reach based on their warriors sacrifice...
They were wrong.
Magnus the Red and his forces flooded through the caverns trapping them in the very place they used to hide slaughtering every last one of them until the last Fanalis lay dead. It was the King who made the decision that the bodies would remain where they lay, left as a reminder to all who would think to come to his domain. Years turned into centuries as the bodies lay in these caverns the palpable fear and dark side growing within caused these bodies to crystallize over time infusing with the dark echoes of fear left by these people. These crystal deposits became the phobis crystals, infused with the power to instill terror in those around it.
These deposits are largely ignored by the epicanthix people who live on the world due to their racial immunity to mind effects.
