OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Phantom Hounds
  • Designation: Semi-Sentient
  • Origins: The Netherworld of the Force
  • Average Lifespan: Unageing; highly variable, lifestyle-dependent.
  • Estimated Population: Inter-Planetary; largely confined to the Netherworld and various Vergences.
  • Description: Canine spirits originating from the Netherworld of the Force, the Phantom Hounds are energy-eating pack predators that tend to be defined by specific aspects of the Force or the attributes of their masters - they can be Light, Dark, or not quite either. While individual personalities and attributes will vary, most are quite loyal to their own kind and/or their masters.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: N/A, spirit beings.
  • Average Height of Adults: See below.
  • Average Length of Adults: 0.5-2 metres
  • Skin Colour: Shades of blue, grey, or black.
  • Hair Colour: N/A, bodies composed of energy.
  • Distinctions: Canine in form though they may be, Phantom Hounds are by no means flesh and blood - composed entirely of Force energies, they are naturally sexless and asexual, reproducing instead through little understood mystical means. It seems likely that they are incapable of such reproduction outside the Netherworld or perhaps Vergences/Nexuses in Realspace. They are ageless but quite killable.
  • Races: Various, may be "bred" or otherwise altered. Can adapt to reflect certain aspects of the Force or their masters. The Dark Side tends to make Hounds more vicious, the Light nobler and more loyal, and those affiliated with the Shadows often have an aptitude for stealth.
  • Force Sensitivity: Low; being spirits, all Phantom Hounds are connected to the Force - only a few can actively use it, however.
STRENGTHS
  • Energy-Eater: Phantom Hounds are able to drain people of life and technology of electrical energy, primarily with their teeth and claws.
  • Incorporeal: In their natural state, Phantom Hounds are incorporeal and by extension difficult to destroy with mundane weaponry.
WEAKNESSES
  • Animalistic: While certainly clever by canine standards, Phantom Hounds cannot use tools or technology in any meaningful fashion.
  • Anti-Magic: Creatures, techniques, or technologies developed to combat spirits or Force Users are likely to work well against the Hounds.
  • Corporeal: Phantom Hounds are vulnerable to high-energy weapons like lightsabers and disruptors while influencing the physical world.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Subsist on Force energies, life force, and/or electricity; can generally sustain themselves on ambient energies within the Netherworld or Vergences but must actively seek food elsewhere, which can range from leeching batteries or being fed by a Force User to draining creatures.
  • Communication: Barks, yips, and body language; can learn to telepathically project images/emotions/general impressions, but not words.
  • Technology Level: N/A; lack of sentience, opposable thumbs, and a corporeal body prevents any meaningful use of tools or technology.
  • Religion/Beliefs: N/A; lack the intellectual independence to form complex beliefs. High level of loyalty to pack-like family groups.
  • General Behaviour: Much like the mortal canines they resemble, Phantom Hounds are pack hunters well-suited for domestication, but unlike their mortal counterparts this process is exceedingly difficult if the would-be-tamer is not a Force User or relatively potent spirit. They tend to be found traversing the endless expanses of the Netherworld if unaffiliated, though their behavioural patterns notably differ greatly based on individual inclinations - packs strongly affiliated with the Dark may hunt the spirits of the unwilling dead, expediting their reintegration into the wholeness of the Force through consumption, whereas those affiliated with the Light are more likely to protect the weak.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Native to the Netherworld, it should come as no surprise that the origins of the Phantom Hounds are shrouded in mystery, for only recently did all but the rarest, most mystically-gifted Force Users gain access to that strange realm without dying first - and the select few beings able to return to the world of the living post-mortem rarely bothered with in-depth studies of the intricacies of spiritual life cycles.

Whatever their origins, they at the very least precede the Netherworld Crisis - by how much, no one can say for sure.

As a general rule, they are less effective killers than Smoke Demons and the like and so were rarely favoured by Sith Sorcerers, Witches, and other practitioners of the mystical arts, at least as far as assassins are concerned. They do, however, tend to make excellent guardian spirits.
