DESCRIPTION

The fall of the Confederacy of Independent Systems greatly complicated the path of the Starlight Industrial Combine. A rather adolescent manufacturing corporation, the Combine's defense contracts with the CIS saw it balloon rapidly into one of the most powerful corporations within the Outer Rim, though still a far cry from other giants such as Roble Manufacturing and even perhaps the Trade Federation. With the Confederacy's inexplicable collapse however, what little power Starlight had gathered withered away, and within months the Combine was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Enter Erick Pryde.

The former Secretary of the Exterior for the fallen Zweihander Union, Erick Pryde's appointment as Chairman of the Board of Directors jump started the Combine's eagerness to participate in the illustrious industry of defense once more. After relocating to the Core, the Board released their ambitious goals, which included securing lofty contracts with the Galactic Alliance and expanding into the Unknown Regions. None could participate Project CED-23A would accomplish both of these goals in one fell swing.

Initially an experimental design during the days of the Confederacy, Project CED-23A 'Phalanx' was envisioned to be a state of the art warship, a noticeable break with normal design contentions. A battlecruiser, it resembled the old Confederate Recusant- if the Recusant was 2.5 Kilometres long and packed enough firepower to hold off twin Star Destroyers. What became of Project CED-23A following the Confederacy's collapse isn't entirely known, however once the project caught the eye of the Board of Directors.

Pryde, whose connections with the Chiss Ascendancy was the stuff of legends, saw an opportunity to integrate the defeated Chiss species into the Alliance, while at the same time expanding his companies influence in galactic society. Sending the Project back to the drawing board, varying changed were to be made.

First, the Phalanx would make use of Megamaser technology. A rather simple nod to the Chiss, using maser's rather than turbolasers increased the battlecruiser's firepower, as it allowed the vessel to sustain an energy barrage on an enemy. Likewise, two so-called super-heavy Megamaser cannons were infused directly into the warships frame, further alluding it to the Recusant.

Perhaps one of the consequential elements of the redesign was the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence, at a scale the Starlight Combine had never attempted. Granting near total control of the Point Defense System to an onboard Artificial Intelligence (one of many, as it would later turn out) created an epic opportunity. In theory, the AI could operate the PDS, while at the same time learning from the fighter pilots, and indeed missiles, it sought to defeat.
